Do you like eating chocolate? Chocolate helps us a lot and is good for our health. When we feel tired, it gives us energy. Companies spend millions of dollars on tools and machines to make chocolate. With a little material, however, you can turn your kitchen into a chocolate factory. Today we will teach the Cocoa Powder Method, and it is easy for beginners. Try it and make your own homemade chocolate.

Now, please follow these steps. First, mix the cocoa powder and butter in a bowl until you have a smooth paste(酱). Then, add the cocoa powder mixture(混合物) to the hot water and stir(搅拌). Allow the temperature to rise back up. Put the hot mixture into a bowl. Add sugar and salt, and then stir. Add milk, stir until smooth. At last, put the mixture into different containers(容器). Nature’s warnings
When the sky suddenly turns dark and the wind is strong, watch out! A dangerous storm might be coming. Storms are frightening. Watch for flashes of lightning. Listen for thunder. If nature sends these warnings, don’t wait for rain. Act right away to keep safe.
Safety Steps
At the first flash of lightning, quickly get inside a building or a car. Do not go into a shed for protection. It is not closed like a building, so it is not safe.
Even after you are indoors, be careful. It is not smart to go near doors and windows. They can blow in or break. A room with no windows is the safest place to be. Do not wash your hands during a storm. Do not use anything that runs on electricity, either. Water and electrical lines are like roads for lightning. Even if you really want to play computer games, don’t! It is better to be bored than to risk getting hurt. Try reading a book instead. Reading is more fun than playing computer games.
If you can’t get to somewhere safe, stay out in the open. You may feel safe under a tree, but that is not a good place to be. Lightning is pulling toward tall poles and trees. Stay down in an open space and cover your ears to protect them. Loud thunder can damage your hearing.
Lightning Strikes
Lightning does not strike people very often. It is not likely that you will ever see that happen. If you do, call 120. Only trained emergency workers should care for a person who has been hit by lighting.
If you follow these rules, you should stay safe during a storm.
44.From Paragraph 1, we learn that ________.
A.storms are frightening and harmful
B.storms often come without warnings
C.people should wait and watch lightning
D.people should take action after the storm
45.The underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A.a building B.a car C.a shed D.a room
46.Which of the statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A.It’s safe to stay indoors to play computer games during a storm.
B.Reading books is as dangerous as using electrical things in a storm.
C.We should not wash our hands when a storm comes.
D.If a person is hit by lightning, you should move him or her to a safe place immediately.
47.The best title for the passage is ________.
A.Training steps B.Home rules C.Natural Order D.Storm Safety
C
Honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk but can they lie in other ways?
Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees(黑猩猩), behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends(假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. They are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, dig the food, and hide it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying “You can’t fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can’t trust her, either.
48.A plover protects its young from a predator by ________.
A.getting closer to its young B.driving away the adult predator
C.leaving its young in another nest D.pretending to be injured
49.By saying “Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky.”, the writer means ________.
A.chimps are ready to attack others B.chimps are sometimes dishonest
C.chimps are jealous of the winners D.chimps can be selfish too
50.What does the story mainly want to tell us?
A.Animals can also tell lies. B.Honesty helps animals survive.
C.Mother Nature can fool animals. D.Animals learn to lie from childhood.
51.Where can you probably find the passage?
A.A tourist guide. B.A physics book.
C.A nature magazine. D.An advertisement.
D
“Oh boys, boys, don’t throw stones at that poor bird,” said an old gray-headed man.
“Why, sir,” said a little boy, “she makes such a scream, that we can’t bear her.” “Yes, but she uses the voice which God gave her. And it is probably as pleasant to her friends as yours is to those who love you. Besides, I am afraid the stone will rebound(弹回), and hurt you as long as you live!”
“Rebound! We don’t understand you, sir!” “Well, come and I will tell you a story.” “Is it a true story?” “Yes. Every word is true.”
“Fifty years ago, I was a boy like you. I used to throw stones, and as I had no other boy very near me to play with, I threw them till I became very accurate(精确的) in my aim.”
“One day I went to work for an aged couple named Hamilton. They were very kind to everybody and everything. Few people had so many birds making their nests under houses. Few had so many pets that seemed to love the couple.”
“For seven years a bird had come. After the long winter, the bird built her nest in the same place and raised her young ones there. She had just returned on the day that I went there to work.”
“During the day, I thought I would try my skill upon her. She sat upon a stick near her nest, and looked at me trustfully. I found a nice stone and threw it with my best skill.”
“It shot the bird on the head, and she dropped dead!”
“I was sorry as soon as I saw her fall. But the deed was done. All day long her mate flew about, and was so sad that he made my heart ache. Why had I taken a life so innocent, and hurt the poor mate so deeply?”
“I said nothing to the old couple about it. But, through a grandchild, they found it out. Though they never said a word to me on the matter, they mourned the bird and buried it. I could never look them in the face afterwards. Oh, I had told them how sorry I was!”
“They have been dead many, many years. But don’t you see how that stone rebounded and hit me? How deep it made upon my memory! How deep upon my conscience(良知)! Why, my dear boys, How I want to give a great deal today if I could do something for that deed!”
“For fifty years I have carried it in my memory! I have never spoken of it before. Yet if what I have now said shall prevent you from throwing a stone that may rebound and deeply hurt your conscience. I shall be very cheerful. ”
The boys at once dropped the stones they had in their hands.

Love animals and STOP hurting them
In February 2021, Chen Kaiyin from Beijing paid 2, 000 yuan and “adopted(领养)” a red panda at Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo. The zoo would use the money to buy food for its animals and to pay for their medical care.
As for Chen, she could get a certificate(证书)and learn about the panda’s daily life online. She can go to the zoo for free. She can also have the chance to feed the animal and clean its living space.
Online adoption is one of the ways the Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo gets help to get through hard times. More than 80 percent of the zoo’s income(收入)comes from visitors buying tickets. But visitor numbers went down greatly because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The adoption has worked well with people’s warm support. About 150 animals have been adopted so far.
Many zoos have also faced the same kind of problems during the pandemic. However, some of them have come up with new ideas to raise money. For example, Shanghai Wildlife Park livestreams(网上直播)every day to show how the animals live. Millions of people watch them. Beijing Zoo has brought out ice creams in the shape(形状)of its animals. It also makes toys and Rubik’s cubes(魔方)with the image(形象)of tigers.
These new ways to raise money make people rethink what roles(角色)zoos play. Shen Zhijun, the head of the Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo, said modern zoos should no longer be places for visitors to just see animals. Zoos can also teach people how to protect animals. “Adoption” is one way for more people to join in and know more about animals. This helps with animal protection.

A few restaurants still have some wild animals as delicious food on the table. I think there are many endangered animals in the world, such as tigers and pandas. When farmers cut down trees, tigers can no longer hide and hunt. Many tigers are killed by people who want to sell their fur for money. And there are few places where pandas can live. We are not alone in the world. We human beings could not live without all the plants and animals around us. So protecting wildlife animals is very important. We must take measures to keep plants from being destroyed and stop animals from being killed. If each of us can plant a tree and build a birdhouse, the world will be more beautiful. It is very easy but useful. Only if we human beings take some measures can wild animals be preserved.

“I said nothing to the old couple about it. But, through a grandchild, they found it out. Though they never said a word to me on the matter, they mourned the bird and buried it. I could never look them in the face afterwards. Oh, I had told them how sorry I was!”
“They have been dead many, many years. But don’t you see how that stone rebounded and hit me? How deep it made upon my memory! How deep upon my conscience(良知)! Why, my dear boys, How I want to give a great deal today if I could do something for that deed!”

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【参考范文】
