She persuaded my father to go to a dental school, from which he graduated with honors. She moved our family into the city, where my father’s care er could be more successful and my brother and I could be better educated. No one had ever called me smart. My family and neighbors had built me up in my mind as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that. She changed many things. She persuaded my father to go to a dental school, from which he graduated with honors. Studies show that children influence about 50 percent of things that families buy, so they’re an attractive target for advertisers. John Taylor, the author of the report, says:“Advertisers can reach their target in many ways. They can, for example, show an ad many times during school holidays, they can make the TV advertisements a little louder than the programmes to attract attention, or they can sponsor programmes and show their advertisements just before the programme begins.” Most advertisements aimed at children are short, imaginative and often in the form of animated cartoons(动画片).“Children love the ads and watch them in the same way as any entertainment programmer,”Taylor says. There’re concerns about advertising aimed at young people. The concerns are shared by Sarah Durham, a writer and journalist specializing in media analysis. “The most worrying thing is that children don’t think carefully when they see television advertisements. They’re less critical than adults and don’t usually realise the advertisement has a persuasive message, to encourage them or their parents to spend as much money as possible on the product or service,”she says. There’re also concerns over the vast sums of money that junk food producers spend on advertising to persuade children to buy their food products. Many advertisements, argues Durham, sell food that is a lot higher in fat, salt and sugar than healthier alternatives. “Many companies target children with offers of free toys, models of cartoon characters and gimmicky(耍花招的)packaging.” Government approaches to controlling advertising to children vary. In Sweden, one of the strictest countries where advertising is concerned, TV advertising to children under the age of 12 is banned. Greece bans television advertisements for children’s toys between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Denmark and the Netherlands also have legal controls whereas France, Britain and Germany prefer self-regulation(自动调节). Some countries are not as certain as the Swedes that advertising to children is harmful. The French argue that children need to see many advertisements so that they can develop their ability to think as they grow up. The belief is that advertising will help children to be more aware of its persuasive power. 8. What does John Taylor mainly talk about in Paragraph 2? A. Ways in which advertisers reach children. B. The time children spend watching television. C. Examples of successful advertising to children. D. The serious problems of advertising to children. 9. Why is Sarah Durham concerned about advertising aimed at children? A. TV ads limit children’s imagination. B. TV ads affect children’s brain development. C. Children lack the good sense to make decisions. D. Children may spend lots of time watching television. 10. What does Durham say about the food advertised? A. It’s tasty. B. It’s cheap. C. It’s unhealthy. D. It’s readymade. 11. What is the French’s attitude toward advertising to children? A. Doubtful. B. Relaxed. C. Objective. D. Unfavorable. A 9. C 10. C 11. 根据文章第二段“John Taylor, the author of the report, says: “Advertisers can reach their target in many ways. They can, for example, show an ad many times during school holidays, they can make the TV advertisements a little louder than the programmers to attract attention, or they can sponsor programmers and show their advertisements just before the programmer begins.””(这份报告的作者约翰•泰勒(John Taylor)表示:“广告商可以通过多种方式达到他们的目标。例如,他们可以在学校放假期间多次播放一则广告,他们可以使电视广告的声音比原定节目大一些,以吸引注意力,或者他们可以赞助节目,在节目开始前播放他们的广告。”)可知,第二段主要在讲对儿童做广告的方式。故选A项。 根据文章第四段““The most worrying thing is that children don’t think carefully when they see television advertisements. They’re less critical than adults and don’t usually realize the advertisement has a persuasive message, to encourage them or their parents to spend as much money as possible on the product or service,” she says.”(“最令人担忧的是,孩子们在看电视广告时没有认真思考。 他们没有成年人那么挑剔,通常不会意识到广告中有说服力的信息来鼓励他们或他们的父母在产品或服务上花费尽可能多的钱。”她说。)可知,Sarah Durham担心的是孩子们缺乏做决定的判断力。故选C项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章倒数第三段“There are also concerns over the vast sums of money that junk food producers spend on advertising to persuade children to buy their food products. Many advertisements, argues Durham, sell food that is a lot higher in fat, salt and sugar than healthier alternatives. “Many companies target children with offers of free toys, models of cartoon characters and gimmicky(耍花招的)packaging.””(人们还担心垃圾食品生产商会花费巨额广告来说服儿童购买他们的食品。 根据文章最后一段“Some countries are not as certain as the Swedes that advertising to children is harmful. The French argue that children need to see many advertisements so that they can develop their ability to think as they grow up. The belief is that advertising will help children to be more aware of its persuasive power.”(有些国家不像瑞典人那样肯定广告对儿童有害。 D Restaurants and cafes throughout England will soon be stopped from using some of the most common single-use plastics-is-a ban (禁令) green groups called necessary, not enough, and long awaited. The long-expected ban, announced last Saturday, makes it illegal for those companies to sell certain kinds of food packaging, as well as plastic plates and bowls designed to be used once and thrown away. The ban takes effect in October. The new strategy is “a really positive step in the right direction, but we’re coming to it late,” said Steve Hynd, a strategy manager for a British environmental organization. The 27 members of the European Union have been banning the items since July 2021. With Scotland stopping the use of single-use plastics last year and Wales advancing similar rules, environmental groups said England was “the only country in Europe” without a ban. Last month they handed in their formal request signed by more than 118,000 people requesting British officials to catchup. England uses more than 5 billion single-use plates and other items each year, according to the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs. Most are made of plastic and end up being burnt, or thrown as litter that damages the food chain. Because they are made from fossil fuels (化石燃料), their production gives out planet warming greenhouse gases and brings a lot of pollution. “Such a ban should be seen as an opportunity to create a cleaner U.K.,” Hynd said. He pictures a future in which it possible to walkthrough a park without seeing plastic littering the landscape or to sit on a beach without watching it wash ashore. 12. What does Steve Hynd mean in paragraph 2? A. England must carry out the ban effectively. B. England have always been on the right path. C. England should have put the ban in place earlier. D. England should follow more bans in the near future. 13. Why did the environmental groups make a request? A. To praise Scotland and Wales. B. To show the officials their strong power. C. To calm down the more than 118,000 people. D. To push the government to take immediate action. 14. What’s the purpose of paragraph 4? A. To explain how plastics are made. B. To tell how to recycle the plastics. C. To display the widespread use of plastics. D. To show the impact of plastics in England. 15. What is Hynd’s attitude towards the ban? A. Amused. B. Confident. C. Doubtful. D. Disappointed. C 13. D 14. D 15. 根据第二段的“The new strategy is “a really positive step in the right direction, but we’re coming to it late,” said Steve Hynd, a strategy manager for a British environmental organization. (新战略是“朝着正确方向迈出的真正积极的一步,但我们来得太晚了,”英国一家环保组织的战略经理Steve Hynd说)”可知,Steve Hynd说此话的意思是英格兰本应该早点实施禁令。故选C。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段的“environmental groups said England was “the only country in Europe” without a ban. Last month they handed in their formal request signed by more than 118,000 people requesting British officials to catchup. (环保组织表示,英格兰是“欧洲唯一一个”没有禁令的国家。上个月,他们递交了一份有超过11.8万人签名的正式请求,要求英国官员跟进)”可知,环保组织提出请求的原因是,催促政府立即采取行动。故选D。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“England uses more than 5 billion single-use plates and other items each year, according to the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs. Most are made of plastic and end up being burnt, or thrown as litter that damages the food chain. Because they are made from fossil fuels (化石燃料), their production gives out planet warming greenhouse gases and brings a lot of pollution. (根据环境、食品和农村事务部的数据,英国每年使用超过50亿个一次性盘子和其他物品。大多数是由塑料制成的,最终被烧毁,或被当作垃圾扔掉,破坏了食物链。因为它们是由化石燃料制成的,它们的生产会释放出使地球变暖的温室气体,并带来很多污染)”推知,本段的主要目的是给读者展示塑料在英国的影响。故选D。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段““Such a ban should be seen as an opportunity to create a cleaner U.K.,” Hynd said. He pictures a future in which it possible to walkthrough a park without seeing plastic littering the landscape or to sit on a beach without watching it wash ashore. (“这样的禁令应该被视为创造一个更清洁的英国的机会,”Hynd说。他描绘了这样一个未来:在公园散步时,不会看到到处乱扔的塑料;坐在海滩上,不会看到塑料被冲上岸)”推知,Hynd对该禁令是充满信心的,认为它会带来一个更清洁的英国。故选B。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you are thinking about asking for a raise in salary, there are several things to keep in mind. Also include any professional development opportunities you have taken advantage of recently and be ready to explain how they have improved your performance on the job. ____17____ Bear in mind that salary levels are based not only on performance but also on the market for your particular skills. Before you ask for a raise, you need to do some research. You should investigate the industry standards for salaries for people in similar positions with similar levels of experience ____18____ Your initial(最初的)request should actually be slightly higher than the amount you want in order to leave some room for negotiation. Then, if you have to go lower than this amount, you still end up with something close to what you want. ____19____ If you have recently been given new responsibilities, it makes sense to ask for a higher level of compensation(补偿). On the other hand, if the company is going through financial difficulties, a request for more money will probably not be met with a favorable response. It would be better to wait until the company is in a better financial position. Finally, never give personal reasons for wanting a higher salary. Your need to pay your child’s college tuition or buy a bigger house is of no concern to your boss. ____20____ That is where you need to keep the conversation. A. Everyone is eager for a raise in salary. B. Skills play a key role in your salary level. C. An important point is the timing of your request. D. Then you will be better prepared when you meet with your boss. E. Your salary level should be based on professional considerations alone. F. You probably do, but you should be able to explain exactly why to your boss. G. This will help you determine what would be a reasonable amount of money to ask for. F 17. D 18. G 19. C 20. 【16题详解】 根据前文“First, consider whether you deserve a higher salary.(首先,考虑一下你是否应该得到更高的薪水。)” F选项“You probably do, but you should be able to explain exactly why to your boss.(你可能会这样做,但你应该能够向你的老板解释清楚原因。)” 【17题详解】 前文说“Also include any professional development opportunities you have taken advantage of recently and be ready to explain how they have improved your performance on the job.( 还要包括你最近利用的任何职业发展机会,并准备好解释它们是如何提高你在工作中的表现的。)” D项“Then you will be better prepared when you meet with your boss.(这样,当你和老板见面时,你就会有更好的准备。)” 故选D项。 【18题详解】 上文说“You should investigate the industry standards for salaries for people in similar positions with similar levels of experience.( 你应该调查一下类似职位和经验水平相似的人的行业工资标准。)” 故G项“This will help you determine what would be a reasonable amount of money to ask for.(这将帮助你确定多少钱是合理的要求。)”,故选G项。 【19题详解】 根据后文的“if the company is going through financial difficulties, a request for more money will probably not be met with a favorable response.( 如果公司正在经历财政困难,要求更多的资金可能不会得到一个有利的回应。)” C项“An important point is the timing of your request.( 关键的一点是你提出要求的时机。)” 【20题详解】 上文说“Your need to pay your child’s college tuition or buy a bigger house is of no concern to your boss.( 你需要支付孩子的大学学费或买一所更大的房子,你的老板根本不关心。)” E项“Your salary level should be based on professional considerations alone.(你的工资水平应该仅仅基于你的专业考虑。)” I had three items in a checkout line. It was a typical November day, cold in the shade and warm in the sun. A perfect day for outdoor shopping. We walked up and down looking at the many things, but nothing called out to me. After an hour of walking with the wind blowing in the air, we decided to call it quits and go home for lunch. On our way, I was rubbing my cold hands together when I noticed that my engagement ring was missing. When I informed Scott of the missing ring he couldn’t believe it either. We searched the car and I searched my clothes, too. No ring! It must have fallen off my finger in the cold. We headed back to the flea market and parked in the same spot as before. We checked that area, and then began walking up and down the maze of tables while looking at the ground. Leaves blew in the wind and people were everywhere. Hundreds of feet passed by and I began getting lightheaded as I intently looked at the ground, I was afraid of the thought of someone finding my ring and wearing it home, not knowing the emotional value and its history. It was an expensive engagement ring my now dead partner had given me twenty years earlier. I had never lost or misplaced it in all that time... until now. We gave up, cold and hungry. I was angry at myself for having lost the ring. We drove home as I tried to hold back my tears. After lunch, which I had no appetite for, we decided to return to the flea market. If we were going to find it, it was now or never. Time was of the importance. And so, for the third time we parked the car in the same spot. Because it was later in the day, most of the vendors had packed up and left. We went to the manager’s office and told him my sad story. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, we reached the far end of the flea market. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: We went to the manager’s office and told him my sad story. I left my name and phone number hoping that someone would find the ring and turn it in. After that, I took a deep breath and we set out on our mission. It was much warmer and not as windy. I took the left side of the paths and Scott the right. We walked and walked and walked. There was broken glass that shone like a diamond ring. There were shiny soda can tabs that caught our eye. There were silver coins. Finally, we reached the far end of the flea market. There were a number of empty tables because the vendors had already packed up and left. And there, under one of those tables, I spotted a shiny little circle in the dirt. I shouted to Scott that I had found the ring! He said it was unbelievable! Yes, it was truly a miracle. My father introduced me to her with these words, “I would like you to meet the fellow who is well known for being the worst boy in this town and will probably start throwing rocks at you no later than tomorrow morning.” My stepmother walked over to me, raised my head slightly upward, and looked at me right in the eye. Then she looked at my father and replied ,“You are wrong. This is not the worst boy at all, but the smartest one who hasn’t yet found a way to give out his enthusiasm.” That statement began a friendship between us. No one had ever called me smart. My family and neighbors had built me up in my mind as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that. She changed many things. She persuaded my father to go to a dental school, from which he graduated with honors. She moved our family into the city, where my father’s care er could be more successful and my brother and I could be better educated. When I turned fourteen, she bought me a secondhand typewriter and told me that she believed that I could become a writer. I knew her enthusiasm, and I saw how it had already improved our lives. I accepted her belief and began to write for local newspapers and finally reached the goal she set for me. I wasn’t the only beneficiary (受益人) . My father became the wealthiest man in town. The Secret of a Good Writer C A new report has concluded that advertising managers are becoming increasingly interested in children. D The serious problems of advertising to children. D Restaurants and cafes throughout England will soon be stopped from using some of the most common single-use plastics-is-a ban (禁令) green groups called necessary, not enough, and long awaited. For example, think about important projects you have worked oh, things you have done to improve the organization of work in your department, or how your efforts have brought more money to the company. ____19____ If you have recently been given new responsibilities it makes sense to ask for a higher level of compensation(补偿). A. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1.A 2.A 3.A 4.B 5.B 6.C 7.C 8.B 9.B 10.B 11.A 12.A 13.C 14.B 15.B 16.C 17.B 18.C 19.A 20.A
