At 10, by chance I heard Whitney Houston's song titled “I will always love you", which made a great deep impression on me though I didn't understand what I heard. I kept trying to repeat the song but in vain; because I didn't speak English, I tried to remember the melody only in order not to forget the song because maybe one day I'll come to know this song's title.
About five years later and by chance again I bought a cassette that included the song. It was amazing that I found what I was looking for! Then I started to listen to my local radio stations which aired English songs. Then, with time going by, I started to understand a few words. Of course I was a secondary school student at that time but I want you to know that what was driving me is love, the love of that language.
After I was grown up a little bit I decided to study English Literature at the university, because I said to myself this is the best subject I've been good at during my school life. And that's what happened; I studied English Literature at university and graduated recently.
My native-like speaking didn't develop because of the university education, but from hard work and self-study. I used to listen to native speakers almost all the time and imitate (模仿) their pronunciation. And I had to repeat and practice even with myself. You know, I didn't have a person to speak English with. So I decided to chat with English people on the Internet.
Finally, one of the best ways to improve your English is using it. Use it or lose it.
1. What does the underlined phrase "in vain” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.For no reason. B.In no time.
C.Without success. D.At no cost.
2. What made the author study English Literature at university?

C.A deep love for the language. D.Desire to be like a native speaker.
3. How did the author achieve the native-like speaking?
①By listening to native speakers. ②By imitating native speakers.
③By speaking English repeatedly. ④By taking university courses.
⑤By practising with a partner. ⑥By chatting with native speakers.
A.①②③⑧ B.①②⑤⑥ C.②③④⑤ D.②③⑤⑧

Fred grew up on a farm, and he managed to become a surgeon and served as a field medic during World War I. After the war, the young doctor returned home to set up his practice. As there weren't many patients, he spent much time reading medical papers. Soon he began to focus on articles on diabetes (糖尿病), a disease that had taken away the life of a neighbour's child.
Realizing that research might solve the problem of this disease,Fred decided he needed a laboratory. He turned to Dr. Macleod at the University of Toronto, who was at first uninterested but later agreed to support him. In 1920, Fred happily entered a poorly equipped laboratory and was given a young assistant namedCharles Best. With lab animals left over from other scientists’ studies, they worked long hours without pay, and Fred even sold his car to fund the experiments. Dr. Macleod soon grew more interested in the team's work, and he was finally in.
Early results in producing the hormone preparation they called insulin(胰岛素) were discouraging. Many of the animals they treated died, but finally one animal survived for several weeks. Then came the moment when their tests on each other were a success.
The first patient to be treated with their insulin was a boy named Leonard. For two years, Leonard had been on the “Allen diet"-a hunger diet for diabetics that allowed only 450 calories (卡路里) a day. The poor boy weighed only seventy-five pounds, hardly alive. But the new insulin treatment was a great success. Leonard gained weight, and his health greatly improved. History shows that Leonard actually lived to adulthood.
Since 1922, millions of lives worldwide have been saved by insulin, and because of Fred, diabetics are able to live normal (正常的) lives where before it was impossible. In1923, the Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded jointly to Frederick Banting and J.J.R. me Macleod. Fred then put his share of the prize money right back into research, establishing the Banting Research Foundation and the Banting Institute.
4.What drew Fred's attention to diabetes?
A.His service in World War I. B.His reading medical papers.
C.His practice as a doctor. D. His care for common people.
5.How did Fred and his team do their research?
A.By collecting data. B.By comparing studies.
C. By experimenting and testing. D. By improving former research.
6.In Leonard's case, what's the major difference between the two treatments?
A.Treatment time. B. Sleep time.
C.Daily calories to burn. D.Control on diet.
7.What's Frederick's main contribution?
A.He provided a proper treatment for a serious disease. B. He won the Nobel Prize in medicine. C. He set up important research centers. D. He allowed patients to become normal.

Scarborough has been on my holiday wish list for a long time, so, when I finally had a chance to get away from busy work, I couldn't wait to book a family staycation in Britain's original seaside, with its rich history and scenic views.
Our first calling point was the delightful Peasholm Park.Situated in Scarborough's North Bay, it was named the UK's sixth Best Park.A relaxing afternoon walk was the perfect start to our trip. It features a lovely boating lake, an amazing waterfall and even a wishing well. The friendly squirrels that jump and run in the park, who will eat nuts from your hand, took me by surprise.
The next morning we began our trip up to Scarborough Castle. It's quite a walk, especially when you meet wind and rain, but it's totally worth the journey. I enjoyed exploring the remains of the castle, which includes an Iron Age settlement, Roman signal station, and 18th-century battery. With information boards spread around the site as well as audio guides, I could really throw myself into 3,000 years of history. Not only that, but from the battlement viewing platforms, you can be lost in impressive coastline views overlooking the North and South Bays.
On our final day in Scarborough, the sun was shining and we wandered along the sandy beach at North Bay, admiring our quiet surroundings. After a long walk, where better to rest our tired legs than resting beside Freddie Gilroy? The huge statue, created by Ray Lonsdale, pictures this former miner (矿工), who fought for the freedom of Belsen, sitting on a bench in his old age.
My first visit to Scarborough was everything that I had hoped and more, reminding me that we have some beautiful holiday destinations right on our doorstep without needing to head abroad. I'll surely return to Scarborough in the future, once I've seen the other delights Britain has to offer.

9. How did Alice feel about the trip to the Castle?

B. She enjoyed exploring rich history there.
C. She was most impressed by the coastline views.
D.The information provided was very educational.
10.Which can be a suitable title for the text by Alice Green?

四、作答示例
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It’s an honor to stand here and share my personal experience on the topic “stay positive”. Life is like a roller coaster ride with its ups and downs. There were times when I was almost giving up, but I chose to stay positive.
I still remember how tough it was when I had my first mid-term examination in senior high school. I used to be “top 10” in the class of my junior high school, but here I was about to cry when I saw my results. Two days’ frustration didn’t work, then I decided to step out and stay positive. I turned to my teachers, who gave me practical suggestions on my study. With their help, I adjusted my study strategies. Now I am back on the track.
Through this experience, I’ve learned staying positive means facing the problem, learning from it, and then moving forward. Let’s choose to stay positive, for it can truly change our lives.
Thank you.
