Advertisements (广告) for junk food like hamburgers are common online and on TV. But in the UK, this will soon change.
In September, the UK government decided to ban (禁止) all online ads for less healthy food and drinks. On TV, such ads cannot appear before 9 pm each day, reported the BBC.
The ban takes effect in October 2024. Its goal is to lower childhood obesity (肥胖). In the 2022-2023 school year, over 20 percent of 4- to 5-year-olds in England were overweight. Among children who just started middle school, more than 36 percent had the same health problem.
The government believes introducing the ban is the right move. Seeing fewer junk foods ads can help children eat more healthily.
Many experts support this view. According to Sabina Crowe at the Northeastern University London, a lot of studies have shown that the more ads people see, the more junk food they will buy.
But some disagree. They argue that banning ads does not get to the real cause of the problem. “Do kids really want junk food because they see it on TV, or is it because they’ve tried it once and want it again?” questioned Dina Rabie at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In her opinion, the government should pay more attention to educating children about eating well.
31. Children in the UK can’t see ads for junk food online from September 2024.
32. More than 36% of children in the UK were overweight during the 2022-2023 school year.

A
Feel down? Hug a tree! Recently, many Chinese young people have turned to trees to help with their stress. Although it sounds strange, there’s a science behind the act of tree-hugging.
It can be explained by the “biophilia hypothesis (亲生命假说)”. It means that humans are born to love being around other living things. Humans’ love for nature is “in ourDNA”. This idea helps to explain why people prefer natural, green views to city views.
Some studies have looked into why tree-hugging can help with our health. A study in 2021 reported that the activity can increase oxytoein (催产素). It’s a hormone (荷尔蒙) responsible for feelings. The higher the level of the oxytocin is, the calmer and happier you may be.
Another hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) is a marker of stress. The brain produces cortisol when the person is anxious, angry, or very sad. Hugging trees helps cut cortisol production, which makes us feel better.
Although the activity is helpful to us, it’s important to keep in mind that we shouldn’t hurt nature while doing it. Many small creatures live on the tree and they are too small to be seen. You may want to be gentle when hugging trees—just like how you hug a friend!
36. Which of the following situation can be explained by biophilia hypothesis?
A. People prefer to live in cities.
B. People feel relaxed when reading books.
C. People feel calm when walking in the forest.
37. According to the article, how does hugging trees help reduce stress?
A. By increasing cortisol levels in the brain.
B. By increasing oxytocin levels.
C. By helping people feel closer to others.
38. which picture can show the meaning of the underlined word “anxious”?
A. B. C.
39. Which of the following action is correct when treating nature?
A. Staying away from trees. B. Touching trees gently. C. Leaving some markers on trees.
40. What is the best title for the text?
A. Hormones and Happiness B. Hugging each other for Happiness C. The Science Behind Tree-Hugging
C 37. B 38. A 39. B 40. C
根据“It can be explained by the ‘biophilia hypothesis’. It means that humans are born…green views to city views.”
根据“The higher the level of the oxytocin is, the calmer and happier you may be.”
根据“Another hormone called cortisol is a marker of stress. The brain produces cortisol when the person is anxious, angry, or very sad. Hugging trees helps cut cortisol production, which makes us feel better.” 故选A。
根据“Many small creatures live on the tree and they are too small to be seen. You may want to be gentle when hugging trees—just like how you hug a friend!”

34 Experts have different views on the effect of the ban.
35. Dina Rabie believes that educating children about healthy eating is a more useful way.

Feel down?

Li Shizhen, the sage of medicine and herbs (药草) played an important role in developing and spreading TCM (中医) in Chinese history.
Li was born in 1518 in Hubei. Both his grandfather and father were doctors. When he was very young, Li went to the mountains with his father to pick herbs. He gained wide knowledge about animals, plants and medicine while growing up.
His father hoped that he could get a government job by passing the Imperial Examinations (科举考试), but he failed after a few attempts. He then focused on the study of medical science. In 1551, Li became famous for curing the prince’s son. Five years later, he was invited to work at the Imperial Medical Institute (太医院). During that time, he read many ancient medical texts, and discovered several mistakes in them. To deal with it, he decided to leave his job and write a book about herbs.
After that, Li travelled far and wide to collect herbs and talk with old peasants. He also read hundreds of medical books. After twenty-seven years of research, Li Shizhen completed the first draft (初稿) of the masterpiece, Ben Cao Gang Mu. He kept polishing the work until his death. The book has recorded over 1,800 types of medical herbs. It is a great work of medicine and an international classic for the study of TCM. It has also been translated into many languages and read not only in China but also in many other countries.
