At the “I Am Mbare” community school near Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, over 30 children sat in neat rows in the small schoolyard. Their eyes were wide with curiosity as I unrolled my calligraphy work, displaying the Chinese characters “sheng sheng bu xi” as my encouragement for the kids to grow healthily.
I read the words aloud and explained their meaning. I was touched as the children excitedly tried to imitate (模仿) me, showing their interest in my calligraphy and the Chinese language. The small yard was filled with their enthusiasm.
This happened during a field trip I took from July 1 to 9 as part of the Tsinghua University Global Competency Overseas Practicum Course. The course sent four teams to various countries as part of a summer program in 2024, and I was selected as a member of the team visiting Zimbabwe.
This small-scale, in-depth course wants to help students to have a global vision, facilitating future people-to-people connections.
During my time in Zimbabwe, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that my calligraphy talents played a significant role in cultural exchanges. One of the highlights was a forum (论坛) where we engaged in a series of activities with local artists. While my fellow team members sang Welcome to Beijing, I created four calligraphy pieces and presented these pieces on stage at the end of the song, receiving an enthusiastic response.
In addition to my performance at the forum, I devoted time each evening to creating calligraphy tailored for the people we were to visit the next day. My efforts were well-received, as the Zimbabweans’ initial surprise at my calligraphy turned into delight, recognition, and gratitude after I explained the meanings to them. This gave me a sense of achievement and firsthand experience in cultural exchanges.
This experience in Zimbabwe has made me realize the power of art to bridge differences. These valuable connections will stay with me, inspiring me to continue sharing Chinese culture while remaining open to others.
4. How did the author feel when the children excitedly tried to imitate him?
A. Touched. B. Curious. C. Bored. D. Grateful.
5. Which paragraph shows the aim of the field trip?
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2. C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.
6. What can we know from the passage?
A. The children in Zimbabwe are not interested in Chinese characters.
B. The field trip lasted for almost half a month.
C. The author created calligraphy tailored every night during the trip.
D. The author has realized the power of music to bridge differences.
7. Why does the author write the passage?
A. Because he wants to call on people to care for children.
B. Because he wants to share an unforgettable experience.
C. Because he wants to stress the importance of international help.
D. Because he wants to introduce people in Zimbabwe.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. C 7. B

I am always surprised by how often gardening, a pursuit all about communing with nature, can be so driven by fear. One of the most common questions I get from concerned gardeners is how to remove the climbing plants like ivy (常春藤) from walls. The thinking behind this is that climbers shatter brickwork and can cause profound structural damage to buildings. But when you actually look at the science, very few of these fears are based on any evidence.
In a 2024 study, a range of climbing plants were found to have a protective effect on model brick buildings constructed for the experiment. The shade cast by the plant leaves cooled the surface of the buildings in the summer by as much as 5.7℃, reducing the wide swings between day and night temperatures—a key driver of surface structural damage.
Despite concerns that plants trap moisture (潮气) against brickwork, leading to damp issues, the same trial found this wasn’t the case. Ivy didn’t significantly raise humidity (湿度) levels—rather, it helped stabilize them. The living coating also lowered summer temperatures inside the buildings by up to 7.2℃.
It is worth bearing in mind that these results were from brand new, model buildings. What about real-world, well-used buildings, which may have already experienced centuries of environmental damage? Well, another study from 2020 found that in five historic buildings across England, bare walls experienced average maximum temperatures 36 percent higher and minimum temperatures 15 percent lower compared with those coated in protective leaves.
Imagine if there was a new material that could cool cities and cut energy bills, all looking beautiful and costing part of the price of alternatives. The truth is that we have had this miracle material all along, but rather than appreciating it, we have spent huge amounts of time worrying about how to dispose of it.
8. Why do many gardeners want to remove climbing plants?
A. They fear the disorderly growth of climbing plants.
B. They ignore the benefit of climbing plants to the atmosphere.
C. They think climbing plants may cause damage to the buildings.
D. They suppose climbing plants don’t match the layout of their gardens.
9. What can be known from the passage?
A. Ivies help raise humidity levels a lot.
B. Wide swings in temperature damage structures.
C. Climbing plants are of little benefit to real-world buildings.
D. Climbing plants are widely popular as they are cheap.
10. Why are historic buildings mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. To share a story. B. To clarify a definition.
C To show their importance. D. To support an idea.
11. What does the underlined phrase “dispose of” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Get rid of. B. Carry on. C. Get a load of. D. Help out.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了攀缘植物(如常春藤)对建筑物的保护作用,而非普遍认为的损害作用。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“The thinking behind this is that climbers shatter brickwork and can cause profound structural damage to buildings.(这背后的想法是,攀缘植物会破坏砖石结构,对建筑物造成严重的结构破坏。)”可知,许多园丁想要去除攀缘植物是因为他们认为攀缘植物可能会对建筑物造成破坏。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“The shade cast by the plant leaves cooled the surface of the buildings in the summer by as much as 5.7℃, reducing the wide swings between day and night temperatures—a key driver of surface structural damage.(夏季,植物叶片的遮荫使建筑物表面降温5.7℃,减少了昼夜温度的剧烈波动——这是造成表面结构破坏的关键因素。)”可知,昼夜温差的大幅度波动会损坏结构。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Well, another study from 2020 found that in five historic buildings across England, bare walls experienced average maximum temperatures 36 percent higher and minimum temperatures 15 percent lower compared with those coated in protective leaves.(那么,020年的另一项研究发现,在英格兰的5座历史建筑中,裸墙的平均最高温度比有树叶保护的墙高36%,最低温度比有树叶保护的墙低15%。)”
根据最后一段中“Imagine if there was a new material that could cool cities and cut energy bills, all looking beautiful and costing part of the price of alternatives. The truth is that we have had this miracle material all along, but rather than appreciating it, we have spent huge amounts of time worrying about how to…(想象一下,如果有一种新材料可以给城市降温,减少能源费用,所有这些都看起来很漂亮,而且成本只是替代品的一部分。事实是,我们一直拥有这种神奇的材料,但我们没有珍惜它,而是花了大量的时间担心如何……)”可知,此处为花了大量的时间担心如何处理除掉它。故可猜测划线短语dispose of为“处理,除掉”的意思,和A选项Get rid of“摆脱,消除”意思相近。故选A项。
D
Ludwig van Beethoven was born over 250 years ago. His music is still played daily around the world. His melodies (乐曲) are often used in movies, TV shows, and even cartoons. Beethoven wrote many famous pieces of music, but he’s probably best known for his nine symphonies (交响曲) . When Beethoven died in 1827, he had some ideas for the 10th Symphony. But all that he left behind were some notes about the piece and a few “sketches”—short bits of written music.
In 2019, a special team of musicians, computer scientists, and historians was formed. Their goal was to try to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony to celebrate his 250th birthday. The team didn’t just want to complete the symphony; they wanted to come as close as possible to producing the symphony that Beethoven meant to write. That’s where deep learning came in.
To train artificial intelligence (AI) to help with the symphony, the team turned every piece of music that Beethoven ever wrote into a form the computer could understand. By feeding the program all of Beethoven’s music, AI could look for patterns in the way Beethoven wrote. This included, for example, how he reused simple melodies all through a piece to create a theme, or how he moved between different parts of the symphony.
Other members of the team studied Beethoven’s notes and sketches, and worked to figure out what Beethoven was planning to do. Where in the symphony did he plan to use each little bit of music that he left? Finally, AI had the challenge of trying to connect the little musical bits into a symphony. It took over two years, but the team was able to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony. Not simply a melody, but 40 minutes of music for a full orchestra (管弦乐队) . So Beethoven now has the 10th Symphony. And though Beethoven didn’t write it all, the team feels sure that the music is very much like what he might have written, if he’d had the chance.
12. The function of the first paragraph is to ________.
A. provide background information B. introduce Beethoven’s music career
C. highlight musicians’ achievements D. bring back Beethoven’s nine symphonies
13. How can AI help to finish the 10th Symphony?
A. By studying other musicians’ symphonies.
B. By collecting all of Beethoven’s music.
C. By finding the musical patterns of Beethoven.
D. By identifying Beethoven’s notes and sketches.
14. What do we know about Beethoven’s 10th Symphony?
A. It requires at least 40 players to play.
B. It is suitable to be played by an orchestra.
C It has to be tested by Beethoven experts.
D. It only took the team two weeks to complete it.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Revival of all Beethoven’s symphonies by AI.
B. Rewriting of Beethoven’s 10 symphonies.
C. AI could perform Beethoven’s 10th Symphony better than humans.
D. AI helped complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. D

When I was 13, I had an awareness that moms shoulder a lot of responsibility without a lot of reward. My mom was no exception. She brought us to Union Station to help us buy Christmas presents for each other-and for her. Because of Mom, my siblings(兄弟姐妹)and I would get to experience the joy of giving. I wanted to find her something special.
The pleasant smell of chocolate reached my nose and I wanted to stay. Normally, when we came here, the candy makers were what I wanted to see most, but today I had a mission. So, we walked on. We explored many stores selling jewelry, purses, toys, clothing and treats, but nothing caught my eye. I just wanted something unique for Mom. I didn’t know what, but I knew I would recognize it when I saw it. Meanwhile, I wondered even though she promised to not look while we went shopping, how would whatever I picked be a surprise?
All of a sudden, there it was, the perfect gift for her! On one of the stands sat a figurine (小塑像)of a lion and lamb lying down together. It would go well with a drawing of a similar scene Mom had hung on the wall. I had heard her talk about how long she had owned the picture and who had drawn it for her. I knew it was very special.
I turned the figurine over to check the price and couldn’t believe my eyes. I could afford it! Mom didn’t know it, but I had put some extra money in my pocket from babysitting the neighbor kids, so I had more money than what she had given me. But she was standing nearby. No way could I make the purchase without her knowing. A moment later, she noticed the very same figurine. I watched her eyes light up. She picked it up and turned it over.

【答案】Then she put it down disappointedly after seeing the price. Letting out a sigh, she walked away, her eyes still lingering on it. I could tell how much she loved it but I knew she wouldn’t buy. Determined to give her a surprise, I waited until she was out of sight and quickly made the purchase My heart beat fast as I thought about what a surprise this would be on Christmas morning. With the figurine in my bag, I went home with my family
I placed it under the tree and settled in to wait for Christmas morning. The day finally came. My siblings and I tore into the treats and treasures our parents had lovingly put inside stockings and brightly wrapped packages. Then we began presenting gifts to parents. When my mom unwrapped my gift, she recognized the figurine instantly, and her face lit up with surprise and joy. She turned to me and hugged me tightly with tears in her eyes. Seeing her happy made me realize the joy of giving.

This small-scale in-depth course wants to help students to have a global vision, facilitating future people-to-people connections.
C
It is worth bearing in mind that these results were from brand new model buildings.

C. It has to be tested by Beethoven experts.
D. It only took the team two weeks to complete it.
15 What is the passage mainly about?
A. Revival of all Beethoven’s symphonies by AI.
B. Rewriting of Beethoven’s 10 symphonies.
C. AI could perform Beethoven’s 10th Symphony better than humans.
D. AI helped complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony.
