We recently heard all about the baby names set to go extinct (绝迹的) as hardly any registrations have been made for them over the last few years. The list included the likes of Carolyn, Debra, Gladys, and Meryl for girls and Billie, Chandler, Greg, Stevie, and Walt for boys.
And while you might think this is sad, the loss out of names that were once beloved, one woman has shared why she’s relieved (宽慰的) that her name might not be used any more.
Carolyn Creel, a designer, recently learned that her name was one of those at risk of extinction with parents. But she said there was no anger or offence (冒犯) caused by this, and instead, she felt just the opposite. She has told of her relief at the name fading away as she’d suffered for years with people mispronouncing it and spelling it wrong.
She said, “For me it’s quite a relief that Carolyn isn’t going to be used anymore! Firstly, no one can pronounce it. I’m always called Caroline and no one can spell it either. I’m not at all sad or offended, and it’s just development. I didn’t like it when people got the spelling or pronunciation wrong. I also found it hard when I was learning to spell and write as it’s quite a long name! My daughter was given a shorter name for that reason!”
There were 80 names in total on the list of those set to go extinct and it was put together by the team over at Pregnacare by Vitabiotics. To do this, they analyzed government data from 1996 to 2022 looking at the number of babies born with each name every year and picked out those with fewer than three births. They’ve then used this information to predict the names that will be the least popular in the future and are at risk of disappearing altogether.
4. Why are some baby names set to go extinct?
A. They are from abroad. B. They are hardly used by parents.
C. They are difficult to register. D. They are of no original meaning.
5. What made Carolyn relieved?
A. Her name dying away. B. The easy spelling of her name.
C. Her anger to be controlled. D. The pronunciation of her new name.
6. What can be known about Carolyn’s daughter’s name?
A. It is difficult to spell. B. It is hard to pronounce.
C. It is taken from Carolyn’s. D. It is shorter than Carolyn’s.
7. How did the team do research according to the last paragraph?
A. By studying lots of factual data.

A cup of coffee before breakfast, is considered quite normal for many people, especially those who have to rise early for work. Some experts, however, have warned the morning habit could have an effect on your health.
Experts have warned the possible bad effects of drinking coffee on an empty stomach. Researchers from the University of Bath have advised making sure to line your stomach before drinking caffeine, which they say could greatly affect a person’s blood sugar control.
The study, the findings of which were published in the British Journal of Nutrition, was carried out on 29 healthy male and female volunteers, all of whom took part in three different overnight experiments.
In scene one, volunteers have a sugary drink after waking up from a normal, uninterrupted (不间断的) sleep. In scene two, they had the exact same drink after sleeping poorly, having been awoken every hour for five minutes each time. When it came to the third scene, volunteers drank a strong black coffee after waking up from an interrupted sleep and were also given a sugary drink half an hour later. Once all three experiments ended, researchers collected blood samples from each of the 29 volunteers and examined their blood sugar level.
It was found that interrupted sleep had no obvious important effect on a person’s blood sugar level when compared to uninterrupted sleep. A strong black coffee drank on an empty stomach, however, increased their blood sugar level to the sugary drink by about 50 percent.
Although further research is needed to better understand long-term risks, the final research result of the researchers is that drinking black coffee first thing before breakfast could actually have an important effect on a person’s blood sugar and metabolic (代谢) control after an interrupted night’s sleep.
8. What do experts suggest before you drink coffee?
A. Getting enough sleep. B. Having a sugary drink.
C. Eating something. D. Filling yourself up with food.
9. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The volunteers’ sleep habits. B. The course of the experiments.
C. The purpose of the experiments. D. The volunteers’ blood sugar levels.
10. What can be inferred from the research result?
A. Normal sleep helps low blood sugar level.
B. A sugary drink is no good for an empty stomach.
C. Interrupted sleep has little effect on blood sugar level.
D. Male volunteers achieve uninterrupted sleep easily.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Coffee’s key role in a health research
B. Coffee’s bad effect on human’s health
C. An experiment on the effect of coffee on sleep
D. A warning of drinking coffee before breakfast
C 9. B 10. C 11. D

The road to an acceptance letter begins with standing out on the college application. Here are some tips on ways to set yourself apart from other college applicants.
Every student has something they are interested in, whether that’s music, theater, writing, sports or community service. But to stand out from their peers, applicants need to diversify (多样化) their résumé, especially their list of after-school activities. “Being in a lot of sports is great,” says Natalie, director of admissions at Frostburg State University in Maryland. “We absolutely don’t want to take away from that because we know student-athletes do see success in the classroom when they’re balancing both class and their athletic requirements. But also, what can we add on top of that to look at that diversity?”
The choice of after-school activities should be authentic, says Melissa Rousseau, director of undergraduate admissions at Calvin University in Michigan. “You can usually tell when a student is just adding things to add things,” she says. “So it’s nice when you can see they have really dived deep into an interest or taken part in something that widens their views a little bit.”
College applicants are also advised to challenge themselves in high school. But that doesn’t mean a student’s schedule needs to be filled with all honors or more advanced subjects. Students can take an additional course subject outside of the standard requirements, for example.
“Instead of just taking the 10th grade biology course, they might sign up for anatomy, environmental science or something else that just shows they wanted to go a little bit deeper,” Rousseau says. “I’d rather see challenging courses with not-perfect grades than easy courses with perfect grades.”
Academic performance is another factor considered in the college application process. But grade drops can happen, whether due to a death in the family, struggles with mental health, difficulty adjusting to high school or other personal reasons. That’s OK, but it’s important to show upward progression. “Even if it’s not perfect, we want to see that continued improvement and continued devotion to getting good grades,” Rousseau says.
12. What does Natalie think of student-athletes?
A. They are often thought little of.
B. They spend too much time on sports.
C. They get attention from other applicants.
D. They need other after-school activities.
13. What does the underlined word “authentic” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. True. B. Difficult. C. Unique. D. Wide.
14. What does Rousseau advise college applicants to do?
A. Gain not-perfect grades. B. Attend challenging courses.
C. Sign up for some easy courses. D. Take part in social activities.
15. How many tips on standing out for college applicants are mentioned in the text?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
D 13. A 14. B 15. A

根据第二段的“But to stand out from their peers, applicants need to diversify their résumé, especially their list of after-school activities. “Being in a lot of sports is great,” says Natalie, director of admissions at Frostburg State University in Maryland. “We absolutely don’t want to take away from that because we know student-athletes do see success in the classroom when they’re balancing both class and their athletic requirements. But also, what can we add on top of that to look at that diversity?”(但为了在同龄人中脱颖而出,申请者需要使简历多样化,尤其是他们的课外活动清单。
根据第三段的“The choice of after-school activities should be authentic, says Melissa Rousseau, director of undergraduate admissions at Calvin University in Michigan. “You can usually tell when a student is just adding things to add things,” she says. “So it’s nice when you can see they have really dived deep into an interest or taken part in something that widens their views a little bit.”(密歇根州卡尔文大学本科生招生主任Melissa Rousseau说,课后活动的选择应该是……的。她说:“你通常可以分辨出学生有些时候只是在添加东西。”“所以,当你看到他们真的深深地投入到一种兴趣中,或者参与到一些能稍微拓宽他们视野的事情中时,这很好。”)可知,Melissa Rousseau认为大学的招生办主任通常能轻而易举地分辨出哪些只是为了体现兴趣多元化而刻意增添的东西。因此,她认为课外活动的选择要真实,即划线词意为“真实的”。故选A。
根据第五段的“I’d rather see challenging courses with not-perfect grades than easy courses with perfect grades.(我宁愿看到成绩不完美的挑战性课程,也不愿看到成绩完美的简单课程。) ”可知,Rousseau建议大学申请者参加具有挑战性的课程。故选B。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“Every student has something they are interested in, whether that’s music, theater, writing, sports or community service. But to stand out from their peers, applicants need to diversify their résumé, especially their list of after-school activities.(每个学生都有自己感兴趣的东西,无论是音乐、戏剧、写作、体育还是社区服务。但为了在同龄人中脱颖而出,申请者需要使简历多样化,尤其是他们的课外活动清单。)”和第三段“The choice of after-school activities should be authentic(课后活动的选择应该是真实的)”可知,大学申请者们的简历中要有各种各样的、真实的课外活动;根据第四段的“College applicants are also advised to challenge themselves in high school.(大学申请者也被建议在高中挑战自己。)”可知,大学申请者们要勇于挑战自己;根据第六段的“Academic performance is another factor considered in the college application process. But grade drops can happen, whether due to a death in the family, struggles with mental health, difficulty adjusting to high school or other personal reasons. That’s OK, but it’s important to show upward progression.(学业成绩是大学申请过程中考虑的另一个因素。但是,无论是由于家庭死亡、心理健康问题、难以适应高中还是其他个人原因,成绩都可能下降。没关系,但重要的是要表现出向上的进步。)”可知,大学申请者们的成绩单要显示成绩上升的趋势。因此,本文主要介绍了三个在大学申请者中脱颖而出的技巧。故选A。
Not long ago, a Halloween gathering in a narrow street turned into a deadly stampede (踩踏), with at least 155 deaths being reported. ____16____. Of course. Here are some tips to increase the chances of survival when a stampede happens.
●____17____
The key to staying safe in a crowd begins the moment you arrive at the location, says Randy I. Atlas, a safety expert. That’s to say, he advises people to take note of where the nearest exits are. It’s a piece of common-sense advice that Atlas applies not just to big events, but even when entering almost any room.
●Go with the crowd
If there’s a sudden panic and crowds begin to push in a certain direction, do not fight hack or push the opposite way. ____18____. If you go against the low, you increase your chances of getting tripped and knocked down. Another risk is, according to experts: if you fight the crowd, you will tire yourself out quickly.
●Figure the “WAY” out
____19____. Therefore, you can potentially angle (斜移) your way out of the situation, experts say. The goal, according to writer Patrick Hutchison, is to get to “the edge of the stampede where it’s less likely that you’ll end up stuck at a chokepoint, like a doorway.”
●Mind the posture
In many stampede events, people die from asphyxiation - they are simply pressed to the point where they can’t breathe. But a possible way to avoid this is to place your arms in front of you. ____20____ Sometimes, the right posture can make all the difference.
A. Pay attention to the exit
B. Don’t panic and take immediate action
C. Instead, move in the same direction of the crowd
D. Death in this disaster is usually caused by being stepped on
E. Some people may wonder what we can do to survive a stampede
F. That could give you some very valuable breathing room and protect your chest
G. Move in a specific direction rather than straight as you go forward with the crowd
E 17. A 18. C 19. G 20. F

Here are some tips to increase the chances of survival when a stampede happens .(当然。
根据下文的“The key to staying safe in a crowd begins the moment you arrive at the location, says Randy I. Atlas, a safety expert. That’s to say, he advises people to take note of where the nearest exits are. It’s a piece of common-sense advice that Atlas applies not just to big events, but even when entering almost any room. (安全专家Randy I. Atlas说,在人群中保持安全的关键是从你到达现场的那一刻开始。也就是说,他建议人们注意最近的出口在哪里。这是一条常识性的建议,阿特拉斯不仅将它用于大型活动,甚至在进入几乎任何房间时也适用。)”可知,A项(注意出口)能够概括本段内容,适合作为标题。故选A项。
根据上文的“If there’s a sudden panic and crowds begin to push in a certain direction, do not fight back or push the opposite way. (如果突然出现恐慌,人群开始向某个方向推进,不要反击或向相反的方向推进。)”和下文的“If you go against the low, you increase your chances of getting tripped and knocked down. Another risk is, according to experts: if you fight the crowd, you will tire yourself out quickly. (如果你逆流而上,你被绊倒和撞倒的几率就会增加。根据专家的说法,另一个风险是:如果你与人群作斗争,你很快就会筋疲力尽。)”可知,C项(相反,朝着人群移动的方向移动。)承接上文,指出不要与人群移动的方向反着来,而是要方向一致,下文指出方向不一致可能带来的后果。故选C项。
【19题详解】
根据下文的“Therefore, you can potentially angle your way out of the situation, experts say. The goal, according to writer Patrick Hutchison, is to get to “the edge of the stampede where it’s less likely that you’ll end up stuck at a chokepoint, like a doorway.” (因此,专家们说,你有可能通过调整角度来摆脱困境。据作家帕特里克·哈奇森称,目标是“到达踩踏事件的边缘,这样你就不太可能被困在瓶颈处,比如门口。”)”可知,G项(与人群一起前进时,朝着特定的方向而不是笔直地前进)指出要有明确的逃生路线,与标题“Figure the “WAY” out (找出“出路”)”相符。故选G项。
【20题详解】
根据上文的“In many stampede events, people die from asphyxiation - they are simply pressed to the point where they can’t breathe. But a possible way to avoid this is to place your arms in front of you. (在许多踩踏事件中,人们死于窒息——他们只是被压到无法呼吸的地步。但避免这种情况的一种可能方法是将你的手臂放在你面前。)”和下文的“Sometimes, the right posture can make all the difference. (有时,正确的姿势会让一切变得不同。)”可知,F项(这可以给你一些非常宝贵的呼吸空间,保护你的胸部)承接上文,指出将你的手臂放在你面前带来的好处,下文进行总结说明,恰当的保护动作带来的意义。故选F项。

A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.

It’s a piece of common-sense advice that Atlas applies not just to big events, but even when entering almost any room.

Alex was very excited because the New Year Eve’s party was coming and as usual it was going to be held in his Uncle Peter’s home. Suddenly, he saw his grandfather sitting alone looking very unhappy.
Alex went to him and asked, “Grandpa, why are you sitting alone? Is there anything wrong with you?”
His grandfather replied “No, I am fine. I just feel like sitting alone.”
“Grandpa, you know the New Year party is near, so are you preparing for it?” asked Alex excitedly.
“No dear, I am not. With the passage of time, the world has completely changed and I don’t see any point in celebrating the world I see today,” answered his grandpa disappointedly.
“I know something is wrong with you and you are not telling me Please tell me what the problem is.” Alex said.
“I feel I am a stranger in the world I am living in. It is not the same as I have known. Now everyone is busy with their own work. Your father is busy with business, your brother is busy on the computer, your sisters are busy watching dramas and your mum is busy with housework. I don’t know how to pass my days,” said his grandfather sadly.
“Grandpa, you have me!”said Alex.
His grandfather smiled and said, “Yeah, you are here, but what about others? In our days, we had a fixed (固定的) time each day when the whole family sat together and talked, shared problems and laughed together.”
