The Fun Street Friends and the Birthday Party
Today is extra-special! It is Sadie's birthday!
The kitchen is buzzing with activity, and everyone has an important job to do.
Sam is in charge of making Sadie's favourite breakfast…blueberry pancakes!
"I'm covered in flour!" he laughed, as he dusted down his apron.
Jazz, the bunny, was wrapping up Sadie's presents, but kept getting the tape caught on his fur!
"It's so sticky!" he giggled, as he struggled to untangle himself.
Tim, the tortoise, is the birthday DJ, and was trying to remember Sadie's favourite song. He was humming different tunes, but kept being interrupted by Sam's noisy mixer.
"I can hardly hear myself think!", he muttered to himself.
Carly, the cat, was calmly pinning up the decorations.
By the time she had finished the kitchen looked amazing, with colourful balloons, beautiful bunting and a handmade 'Happy Birthday' sign.
They were ready!
Suddenly, they heard Sadie skip down the stairs, one at a time.
They all hid and kept as quiet as they could, until Sadie flung open the kitchen door.
"Surprise, surprise!" they all cheered, and went to give the birthday girl a 'Fun Street Friend' hug. They had a dance to Sadie's favourite song, then all sat down to tuck in to the blueberry pancakes.
"They're delicious!" grinned Sadie. Everyone agreed!
One by one, Sadie began to open her cards and presents.
There was an amazing kite from Sam, and fantastic football boots from Jazz.
"Thanks guys! They're beautifully wrapped too!", said Sadie, giving Jazz a wink.
Tim had given Sadie an awesome bat and ball, and Carly had saved up and bought her friend a wonderful new tracksuit.
"They're perfect!", Sadie smiled, "and just look at the decorations! You've all been working so hard!"
What a perfect start to the day.
Sam, Jazz, Tim and Carly began to clear away the pots, and put the rubbish in the bin.
"We could go for a swim?", suggested Sam.
"Or, take a trip to the cinema?" said Tim.
Sadie lifted up the ripped wrapping paper, and looked under the opened envelopes.
"Has there been a delivery from Great Aunt Mabel?", Sadie asked. "She never misses my birthday!"
The Fun Street Friends looked at each other in surprise.
Sadie was right. Great Aunt Mabel never forgot to send her Great Niece an extra-special something.
Sadie looked a little bit downhearted.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door.
"Who can that be?" said the Fun Street Friends, Sadie dashed to see who it was.
Sadie gasped as she caught sight of a flowery hat, purple glasses and a pink spotty scarf.
It was Great Aunt Mabel!
She threw open the door, and gave her Great Aunt a huge cuddle.
"Happy birthday, my darling" laughed Great Aunt Mabel, as she gave Sadie a kiss.
"I've come to give you a special surprise!".
Great Aunt Mabel explained her plan. They were going to take a trip to town to buy a brand-new birthday outfit.
What fun!
"Just one condition", said Great Aunt Mabel. "You must choose whatever you like!".
Sadie smiled at Sam, Jazz, Tim and Carly. "Can my friends come too?", she asked.
"Of course! The more the merrier!", laughed Great Aunt Mabel. "Now, let's hurry and catch the bus!".
How exciting!
Great Aunt Mabel and the Fun Street Friends chatted and giggled on the bus, as they bumped along the busy road into town. They waved as they spotted their friends, and nibbled on the candy bars from Great Aunt Mabel's huge handbag.
"We're here", spotted Carly, and one by one all hopped off at the bus stop.
"I know the perfect place", declared Great Aunt Mabel.
"Follow me!"
The Fun Street Friends held hands as they skipped along.
They were all excited to help choose Sadie's birthday treat.
Great Aunt Mabel stopped in front of 'Bella Bow's Boutique'. A tinkling bell rang out as they all stepped inside, and wiped their feet on the door mat.
"Look at the prices!", whispered Tim to his friends as he took a look at the price tags.
"Don't touch ANYTHING!"
Sam, Jazz, Tim and Carly carefully sat down on the fancy sofa in the corner of the shop.
"Welcome, welcome! I am the one and only Bella Bow!"
A lady, dressed head to toe in lilac, wearing a tiara and strings of pearls, appeared in a cloud of rose perfume.
"How can I be of assistance to you, my darlings?"
Great Aunt Mabel put her arm around Sadie, and explained her plan.
"Happy birthday, my little sweetheart", gushed Bella, as she fluttered her eyelashes.
"You've come to the perfect place!"
Sadie began to describe the clothes that she liked to wear, and told Bella about her new football boots and tracksuit.
Bella interrupted with a clap of her hands.
"Hush, hush!", she cried.
"I will make a splendid selection just for you", and she ushered Sadie into the changing room.
Before too long, Sadie appeared from behind the curtain.
She was wearing a frilly pink dress, with big puffed sleeves.
Pink flowers were sewn around the bottom, and ribbons were tied around each sleeve.
The neck was tickly, and was trimmed with pink hearts.
The dress was finished off with a spotty silk sash around the middle.
"Breathtaking! Beautiful!", babbled Bella Bow, as she adjusted the frills and made Sadie stand up straight.
Sadie looked over to her friends.
"I'm not sure I could climb trees in this", she said softly, and they gave her a little smile.
"Now, young lady!", exclaimed Bella Bow. "It's time for some astounding accessories".
Bella took Sadie by the arm, and led her to a fluffy stool in front of a fancy golden mirror.
In the blink of an eye, Bella had placed something on Sadie's head.
It was a pink and purple striped hat, with fluffy lilac feathers stitched around the brim.
Bella clasped her hands together, and sighed.
"Simply divine!", she uttered, and went off to find the matching handbag.
Sadie glanced at her friends in the reflection of the mirror.
"It's not quite right for flying kites", she whispered, and they laughed quietly.
Bella Bow returned, holding a big pink box in triumph.
"I've found the perfect shoes!", she trilled.
"They will complete your transformation!".
Sadie stood up, and slipped them on.
The shoes were silver and shiny, with glittery bows and pointy high heels.
She clomped and plodded around the shop, Sam, Jazz, Tim and Carly tried not to laugh.
"How on Earth can I play football in these?", she sighed.
The dress was itchy, the hat looked silly and she could hardly stand up in the shoes.
What was she going to do?
She stared in the mirror, and started to speak.
"Honestly…what do you all…"
Bella Bow barged in.
"Adorable…so chic! A real princess at last!"
Sadie looked at her friends.
"You look beautiful", said Carly, "but you did before you came in".
Sam, Jazz and Tim nodded in agreement.
She didn't need sparkling sequins, frills and feathers to look special.
"You always look lovely" said Great Aunt Mabel, "and I did say that you could have anything you wished for. I just want you to be happy."
In no time at all, Sadie was back in her comfortable clothes.
They all thanked Bella Bow, who said a snooty "goodbye", with her nose in the air.
The Fun Street Friends skipped out of the shop.
Giggling, they all linked arms, and Jazz picked off a stray feather from Sadie's hair.
Great Aunt Mabel spread out a big map of the town.
"There's a bookshop, a toyshop, a music shop and a sports shop. Take your pick!", smiled Great Aunt Mabel.
Sadie thought long and hard, then had an idea.
"Follow me!", she instructed, and they strolled along the pavement in the sunshine.
In just a few minutes, they had arrived at a supermarket.
Great Aunt Mabel, Sam, Jazz, Tim and Carly were rather confused!
Great Aunt Mabel handed over her birthday money, Sadie gave her a kiss to say "thank you", then grabbed a basket and hurried inside.
How puzzling!
In no time at all, Sadie skipped out of the supermarket, carrying big bags bulging with shopping.
She grinned at her friends, and winked at Great Aunt Mabel.
"This way!", she laughed, and whistling away, led the procession of Sam, Jazz, Tim, Carly and Great Aunt Mabel down the street.
They followed Sadie to the end of the road, and holding hands, walked over the zebra crossing to the other side.
"I think we're heading for the park!", suggested Sam.
"Hooray!", they all cheered.
Sadie headed for a shaded spot by the big oak tree.
She put down the heavy bags, and in a flash, brought out a huge checked table cloth which she spread on the grass.
"It's picnic time!", Sadie chuckled.
One by one, she brought out the shopping from her bag.
There were tasty red cherries…perfect for Carly.
Some juicy green apples, which were Tim's favourite.
Also, there was some delicious bread and cheese which Sam loved.
Sadie had bought a big bottle of sparkling lemonade with stripy straws, and an orange juice for Tim as fizzy drinks made him hiccup!
As a special treat for all her friends, there was an amazing chocolate cake, covered with juicy strawberries.
Sadie had even bought a comfy picnic rug for Great Aunt Mabel to sit on!
"It's the best birthday I could ever have", laughed Sadie.
"I'm surrounded by everyone I love the most!".
They all cheered, and sang "happy birthday".
"Eat up!" laughed Sadie. "I've bought a football, too...and Great Aunt Mabel's in goal"
