He is very clever and has lots of friends. But, there is one small problem: when Pip sees a nut, he loses all decorum! He pounces on it, cracks it open and gobbles it right up. One day a new resident arrives in the forest: Mimi the mouse. Pip offers to show her around. To thank him, Mimi invites Pip to tea at her house. Pip happily accepts. Once her squirrel friend is sitting comfortably at the table, Mimi brings out… a hazelnut tart! Quite forgetting where he is, Pip doesn't even pause for breath – he dives straight in and devours it in a single mouthful! Noticing that Mimi seems a little put out, Pip gives her a beaming grin, revealing all the pieces of nut stuck between his big teeth. "Pip!" She exclaims, "that's disgusting!" But Pip stares at her in bewilderment. Realising that he doesn't understand, Mimi decides to teach him some table manners. The next day, Pip is once again invited to Mimi's house. As soon as he is seated, Mimi unveils a magnificent hazelnut pudding. Pip is just about to pounce when Mimi stops him. "I would advise you not to dive straight in and serve yourself. Let your host serve you and you'll see how happy that makes them! I promise there will be enough to go around!" Mimi adds, winking at him. "You can rest assured that nuts don't have feet – they can't go anywhere! So perhaps you could wait until everybody is served before you start. It's always nicer to eat together." Pip likes to eat with his fingers, but this isn't always practical… Slip, slop! The pudding slides between his fingers. "If you want to avoid a lot of mess, maybe you should use your cutlery. That way, your pudding won't slide around!" "Zat worksh!" Pip replies, his mouth bulging with food. "Careful!" exclaims Mimi. "If you speak with your mouth full or eat with your mouth open, you'll spray all your friends with food." Pip leans an elbow on the table and rests his head in his hand. "If you ever dream of being regal like a prince or strong like Superman, you would do better to sit up straight and not slouch over the table." "And finally, whilst you're at the table, try not to fidget around or lean back on your chair. You could fall and hurt yourself and end up sprawled on the floor with your plate on your head. It would be a real pity to waste such good nuts!" The next day, Mimi invites all her new neighbours over for tea. Pip is careful to follow his friend's advice and is very restrained when she brings out some delicious-looking nut desserts. To say well done, Mimi gives him her recipe book. Now Pip can make them for himself whenever he wants! MIMI: "So, Pip, have you learnt anything today?" PIP: "I have! I've learnt that I must only take my fair share so that there's enough to go around." MIMI: "And don't forget that you need to wait until everyone is served before tucking in." PIP: "I've also realised that it's much simpler to use cutlery! And that if I don't want to shower my friends with food, I should close my mouth while I'm eating and not speak with my mouth full."
