The Fun Street Friends and the Scary Sleepover
"Look!" said Sam, excitedly. "Tonight's the night!"
He pointed to the calendar, and Sadie, Jazz the bunny and Carly the cat hurried over to see. Tim the tortoise looked over from his favourite fluffy cushion.
There it was a big red cross to remember that tonight is the night!
It's the Fun Street Friends Sleepover!
Sadie had even drawn coloured stars all around it, so that they wouldn't be able to forget.
"Hooray!" they all cheered. "We can't wait!"
Carly grabbed a pen and notebook.
"Right!", she called out. "Let's get organised!"
Together they wrote a list of jobs that needed to be done before tonight.
They were going to have such fun!
Sam organised the games, and chose a film for them all to watch.
"This is a great adventure story", he thought, as he read the box.
"Just perfect for tonight!"
Carly rushed upstairs to grab the sleeping bags and pillows.
"Don't forget my favourite fleecy cover", called Tim, as he stretched out on his cushion.
"Don't worry! I've got it!" said Carly in a muffled voice, as she carried down the huge pile of blankets.
Sadie was in charge of the treats and snacks, and was soon popping popcorn in the pan.
"Tastes delicious!" laughed Sadie, as she cheekily nibbled away!
"I'd better fill the sweetie jar too", she thought.
Jazz was a whizz at making hot chocolates, with special squirty cream and squidgy marshmallows.
"Mmmmmm! Just perfect!" whispered Jazz, as he licked his lips.
"What's on the list for me?", yawned Tim.
Carly checked the list.
"Your job is to hang the fairy lights, if that's not too much trouble!" she giggled.
"It'll be the first thing I do after my nap", he sighed, and gently closed his eyes.
At last everything was ready…even the fairy lights!
The sleepover had begun!
The Fun Street Friends snuggled up on the sofa, and got ready to share the snacks and sip the drinks. Sam pressed 'play', and the film began.
Suddenly, Tim called out, in a frightened voice.
"W-w-w-what's that noise?", he trembled. "It sounds like banging!"
Sam stopped the film, and everyone began to listen.
Tim was right. The banging was getting louder and louder!
Together, they bravely peeped out of the window, then began to laugh.
It was their friend, Piero the pizza delivery boy, knocking at the door!
"Sorry guys! I forgot that I'd ordered one!", giggled Sadie as she gave Piero the money and waved him goodbye.
"Now, where were we", muttered Sam, as he started the film once more.
"This is a great bit!" whispered Carly, as she passed around the last slice of pizza.
Tim grabbed it, and began tucking in.
Suddenly, Jazz shrieked, and his hair was standing on end.
"L-l-l-l-look! A g-g-g-g-ghost!"
He pointed to the window with a shaky paw.
The Fun Street Friends yelped, and nervously looked out from behind the curtains.
"It's got bendy, flapping arms!", whispered Carly.
"And long, twisted legs", murmured Tim, through chattering teeth.
Sadie began to chuckle.
"It's just the washing on the line!", she laughed, comforting her friends.
"There's nothing to be afraid of!"
Tim was relieved.
"I don't need shocks like that!", he mumbled to himself, as he gulped down the remains of the pizza.
They flopped back down, and the film began again.
They blew on the delicious hot chocolate to cool it down, and sipped it slowly.
"You've got cream on your lips, Sam!", laughed Carly as he put down his mug.
Suddenly, her laughter stopped, and she sat bolt upright.
"Oh n-n-n-n-no! A m-m-m-massive spider!" wailed Carly.
Everyone jumped up onto the sofa and huddled together.
They stared at the furry, grey, wriggling creature on the wall opposite.
Sadie burst into a fit of giggles.
"It's just the shadow from Jazz's long ears", she chuckled.
"He should be more like me", sighed Tim sleepily, "and stop bouncing about".
Jazz looked at his friends and began to giggle.
"Press play, Sam", he laughed, "and I'll try to keep as still as Tim!"
They all took their places, and shared the tasty popcorn.
Tim was munching so loudly that they could hardly hear the film.
"Ssshhhhh Tim!", Sadie muttered, as she nudged him with her elbow. For a moment, everything was calm and peaceful.
"Hang on!", said Sam in a shaky voice. "I r-r-r-really CAN hear a ghost this time!"
He reached for the remote control, and turned the sound right down.
Sam was right! There was a very spooky sound, coming from right outside the window!
"Hooooo-hooooo! To-whit, to-whooo! Hooooo-hooooo! To-whit, to-whooo!"
Very carefully and very slowly they opened the curtains, and took a glimpse outside.
"Oh, it's you!", they all cried out.
It was their friend, Ollie Owl, who had come to say "goodnight".
"To-whit, to-whooo!", he called, as he flapped his wings.
Sam, Sadie, Jazz and Carly chuckled as they waved him goodbye, and Tim grabbed a pile of popcorn while no-one was looking!
"Yummy!", he muttered to himself, as he plopped back down on the sofa.
"Now, where were we up to?", asked Sam, as he reached for the remote control.
Everyone looked puzzled.
They had been disturbed so many times that no-one could quite remember!
Carly had an idea.
"Why don't we play a game?", she suggested.
"As long as it's a quiet one", mumbled Tim. "I'm feeling quite sleepy"
They looked at each other and smiled, and Sam went to choose from the big pile of games.
He carefully laid out the board, and brought the pieces out of the box one by one.
To pass the time, Sadie, Jazz, Tim and Carly took turns to tell jokes, and giggled together as they talked about the fun they'd had.
"The game is ready!", called Sam. "Let's play!"
Everyone hopped down from the sofa, and settled on the floor next to the board.
"I'll just perch on my favourite cushion, if you don't mind", sighed Tim. "It's been quite an exhausting evening".
They took turns to throw the dice, and Carly was beginning to take the lead.
Out of the blue, Sadie jumped up in alarm. She sent the board flying, and the pieces were scattered all around the room.
"It's a snake! It's a snake!", Sadie shouted, pointing to the corner of the room.
The Fun Street Friends screamed and leapt off the floor.
They were afraid to look, and peeped through their shaking fingers.
One by one, they dissolved into fits of laughter. It wasn't a slinking, scary snake…it was a stretchy, spotty sock!
"It must have fallen out of the washing basket", giggled Sam, as he dangled the sock in front of Sadie.
"Keep the noise down!", grumbled Tim dozily, with one eye open. "It's getting late!"
Sam, Sadie, Jazz and Carly weren't tired at all.
They had munched through the popcorn, and finished off the surprise pizza. The hot chocolate mugs were empty and the sweetie jar next to Tim had mysteriously disappeared.
"I've got a great idea!", said Jazz, smiling. "Let's make a midnight feast!"
Even though it was only 9 o'clock, everyone agreed.
They burst into the kitchen, and headed for the fridge.
Inside were some juicy green grapes, delicious cheese and red crunchy apples.
"Perfect!", said Sadie. "Let's get…"
Before she could finish, Sadie was interrupted by a terrible moaning sound.
"What on Earth is that frightful noise?", said Carly, as she clung onto her friends. "I'm so afraid!"
Fearfully, they crept around the kitchen. They peeped under the table, searched the kitchen cupboards and even looked in the oven. Slowly, they put their heads around the kitchen door.
There was the culprit!
Tim was taking a nap, snoring his head off! The noise was even making his shell vibrate!
"Wake up sleepy head!", they yelled. "We're meant to be having fun!"
Tim stretched and yawned. He'd been having the best dream ever, all about toasted marshmallows. The thought of a midnight feast was very tempting.
Sleepily, he sneaked into the kitchen to join his friends.
He went over to see if Jazz had any leftover marshmallows.
He just couldn't get the thought of them out of his head!
"Jazz", he began, "my super friend, my best buddy, my marvellous mate"
Tim stopped.
"Carry on!", laughed Jazz, but Tim remained silent.
Even in his sleepy state, Tim could hear a creaking sound.
Cr-r-r-r-eak…creak…creak!
Cr-r-r-r-eak…creak…creak!
It was coming from the garden. The creaking didn't stop.
"L-l-l-l-listen everyone!" said Tim in a wobbly voice.
"C-c-c-c-can you hear that noise?"
Everyone stopped what they were doing, put down their snacks, and began to listen.
Tim was right! There really was a very strange noise coming from outside.
Cr-r-r-r-eak…creak…creak!
Cr-r-r-r-eak…creak…creak!
Sam grabbed a torch from the hook.
"Follow me" he said bravely "Let's go and investigate"
Sadie, Carly, Jazz and Tim lined up behind Sam, and they all tiptoed out into the garden.
The night air felt chilly. The sky was clear, the moon shone and the stars twinkled. Sam shone his torch, and, holding hands, the Fun Street Friends crept quietly down the path.
"I'm afraid", murmured Sadie.
"I'm trembling", Tim stuttered.
"What can it be?", mumbled Jazz.
"I'm a scaredy-cat!", Carly whispered.
The creaking was getting louder and louder, and the Fun Street Friends were feeling more and more afraid.
Cr-r-r-r-eak…creak…creak!
Cr-r-r-r-eak…creak…creak!
Suddenly, they all began to laugh!
The creaking was coming from the trampoline!
Their friends, Freddy and Fiona Fox, were having lots of fun bouncing away.
They always came out at night to explore, play and enjoy themselves.
"Come and join us!" they called out. "There's plenty of room for everybody!"
In no time at all, they were all leaping, jumping and bouncing away.
The fireflies were buzzing, the glow-worms were glowing and Ollie Owl was joining in with a "to-whit, to-whooo!".
"This has been the best sleepover…EVER!", agreed Sam, Sadie, Jazz and Carly, as they hopped and jumped on the trampoline. The evening had been a fun adventure from beginning to end.
One by one, they all looked around and came to a sudden halt.
"Where's Tim?", they asked together.
Quickly, the friends hopped down, switched on the torch and began to search. It didn't take them long to find Tim fast asleep at last, snuggled under the trampoline.
"Night, night Tim!", they whispered as they tucked him up with his favourite cover.
"Night, night, everyone!"
