There are posters on every tree trunk advertising a much-anticipated event: the Mr or Miss Forest contest! Billy is not like the other forest residents, and he wonders if he should take part. As a dragon – and a water-breathing dragon at that – he certainly has the power to surprise people. "We all know what will happen in the end, though…" says Billy's friend, Geraldine, with a sigh. "What's that?" asks Billy. "It's always the same," Geraldine explains. "Everyone parades out and, in the end, a unicorn walks away with the trophy. "Not this time," says Billy confidently, "because this time we're going to enter!" The competition takes place in a beautiful clearing in the middle of the forest. The organiser, Owen the owl, is as old as the trees themselves. Billy and Geraldine go to see him. "I am guessing you're here to sign up as judges…" murmurs the old owl. "Sorry, but you're too late. Come back next year!" As Geraldine turns to leave, Billy speaks up. "No, sir. Actually, we would like to enter the contest!" The old owl bursts out laughing. He laughs so loudly that everyone turns to stare at Billy. The young dragon shuffles in embarrassment, but he is not going to give up. "As you wish," Owen eventually replies, once he has calmed down enough to speak! Billy and Geraldine go 'backstage', behind the hazel trees, where all the contestants are getting ready. There are beautiful doe-eyed deer, charming squirrels with feathery tails and – of course – a magnificent unicorn with a rainbow mane. That evening, all the forest residents gather in the clearing, eager to watch the show. Backstage, everybody is feeling the pressure. It takes guts to perform in front of an audience. Owen calls all the contestants over and offers them some final words of encouragement. "It's now time for each of you to perform for the people of the forest. I hope you have been rehearsing your acts. Best of luck to you all! Billy and Geraldine exchange a worried look. They didn't know they needed an act… With the sun dipping towards the horizon, the forest is bathed in a warm glow. The audience is impatient for the show to start. First, a female deer takes to the stage. She prances up and down gracefully until, all of a sudden, some music starts up and the deer begins to jiggle about all over the place! The crowd cheers and the deer leaves the stage to the sound of thunderous applause. The unicorn is next up. She trots around and rears up several times, shaking her head around to show off her rainbow-coloured locks. After a few laps of the stage, she heads off, head held high, while the audience claps wildly. "We can't go out there," declares Geraldine. "Just look at all these beautiful creatures. We have no chance." At that very moment, a wild boar walks past. Its fur is all slicked back and it has an impressive haircut! This gives Billy an idea. The young dragon lifts Geraldine up on top of his head. Billy now has a fabulous rock-star haircut, with a striking white stripe down the middle. But, as Billy walks out on to the stage, the audience bursts out laughing! Really upset, the dragon spouts a huge jet of water up into the sky. And… as if by magic, the sun hits the water droplets, creating a beautiful rainbow. Everyone gasps at this breathtaking sight. The others may have performed better, but it is Billy who captures the crowd's imagination. So, for the first time ever, a dragon (with a skunk haircut!) takes the Mr Forest title. Meet Billy - the gentle little dragon with a very big heart. As you know, dragons generally breathe fire. Not Billy, though. He is a water-breathing dragon! And with beavers for parents, you could certainly say that Billy is one of a kind... Today is the day of the 'Mr or Miss Forest' contest. A unicorn wins it every year without fail.
