The Adventures of Lola and Woofy The Odd Student Text: Édith Soonckindt and Mathieu Couplet It was Lola's first day at school. Lola was very excited. She proudly carried her new school bag, which her mum had bought for her. She and Tito were going to walk to school together. Though Lola was excited, she was also upset. She was heartbroken because she had to leave Woofy behind. Woofy was sad too. Lola wanted to share all her new discoveries and adventures at school with him. All day long, she thought of a way of bringing him in to school, and finally she got an idea. She decided that she would hide Woofy in her school bag and take him along to school with her! And the next day, she did just that. Quietly, Woofy slipped into her school bag. Lola explained to him that he had to behave well and be a good dog all through the day. "Woof! Woof! I promise to be a good dog," Woofy seemed to say. He was delighted because he didn't have to stay alone at home all day without her. That day, Lola's school bag appeared to be somewhat large, and, occasionally, it moved a little. But, Woofy remembered he should not bark, so everything was fine. He could peep out of the bag. The teacher and the other schoolchildren didn't notice a thing. Only Tito knew Lola's secret. It was during breaktime that things started getting a little difficult. Everyone went out to the playground at breaktime. Lola couldn't leave Woofy all alone. If he was not watched, he would certainly get into some mischief and Lola could get told off. Lola didn't want Woofy to feel upset. She quietly took her school bag out to the playground. Tito remained close to her so that the teacher would not notice anything. In the playground, Lola let Woofy out of the bag for a few minutes, telling him to behave himself. Soon, a crowd gathered around Woofy. Everyone was really happy to see such a cute and apparently obedient dog. They gathered around Woofy in a circle because they didn't want the teacher to find him and punish Lola. Poor Woofy was feeling hungry by now. His stomach was rumbling loudly. A little boy close by was eating a sandwich. Suddenly, Woofy pounced on the little boy's sandwich! "Ooooh!" exclaimed the other children and quickly ran away. They were scared that Woofy might pounce on their sandwiches too. The teacher heard the noise and came towards them. She found Woofy, of course. Lola tried to tell her that she wanted Woofy to learn new things, but the teacher was very angry. To bring a dog to school, so that he too could learn to read and count was a ridiculous idea! That evening, Lola was scared to go home. What a horrible end to a day that had started so well. She knew that her teacher would have told her mum and dad about the incident. And that she was going to get a good telling off. With Woofy once again inside her school bag and Tito by her side she walked home. But on the doorstep she began to cry. Lola's mum and dad had come back early that day. They were certainly angry, but they understood her feelings. So they didn't tell her off. And Lola stopped crying. Then, they explained to her that a dog's place was at home, in the garden or in his basket, not inside a school bag where it's dark and he can hardly breathe. Lola realized that a dog could never learn to read or count. Perhaps she was being a little selfish in not wanting to be separated from Woofy. She told Woofy she was sorry and made up for it by playing a game with his favourite ball. The next day, Lola left Woofy lying peacefully in his basket, while she went off to school.
