一、阅读理解。
There are a lot of things we can do to help our friends and family. Sometimes even small help may make them feel great. What can we do?
Ask what you can do to help. Talk to family members or friends and ask what they most need help with and just help do it. Don't keep waiting until they tell you about their problems. You should show you're always caring about them.
Listen. Very often people just need someone to listen to them with kindness. When someone is telling you about himself or herself, don't interrupt him or her with your own feelings, thoughts, and stories. Just try to be a good listener. It is a kind of great help.
Offer to do jobs or chores. When someone is busy with tiring jobs or chores, he or she needs more help. Find out what your family or friends are busy with and spend some time giving them a hand. Because of your help, they'll relax and thank you so much.
Show you're caring about them. Sometimes people feel cut off from their family or friends. In this situation, just let the friend or the family member know you're thinking of him or her and that he or she is important to you. It doesn't have to be a big, expensive thing; something small such as a greeting card or an e-mail will be fine.

Life can be very hard for some children from poor families. Their parents have to work hard to pay for their necessary needs, and they don't have enough money to pay for their other needs. For example, these kids can't go to summer or winter camps, take music lessons, buy glasses or do many other things that are important to their self-esteem (自尊心). Luckily, Alice's Kids, a charity organization in America, is working hard to help these kids out. It provides money through gift cards for kids in need. However, these kids don't know they're accepting charity.
Because of their own past experiences, Ron Fitzsimmons and his sister Laura set up Alice's Kids in 2011. They grew up in a poor family during the 1960s. Their father had a serious illness and they spent much money in treating his illness. After their father died, their mother worked hard to make money. Ron hated to go to school because he felt uncomfortable to wear old and broken clothing around his well-dressed classmates. Few students would like to play with him. He also remembered the shame he felt from accepting charity.
Now Ron and his sister use those sad memories for good. Alice's Kids accepts requests (请求) from school social workers and goes through each one by sending gift cards to the parents, so they can buy the gift themselves for their kids. Since the kids don't know about this, the parents are given a chance (机会) to meet their kids' other needs - and the kids may feel proud(自豪) of their parents.
"It helps improve children's self-esteem and bring them joy and happiness," Ron said. "We believe a little help can go a long way."
