Eight steps to refocus your anxiety
Thinking of issues that seem unfixable can lead to an anxious paralysis, but there's hope. This is some of the advice I give to those in need of help.
Take a break from the news. Doomscrolling can be addictive and increase the tragic nature of events. In one study, researchers found that those who were immersed in the Boston Marathon bombing news for multiple hours a day in the week after the event experienced higher stress than individuals who were on the scene. I advise those who are feeling depressed by the headlines to read the news just once a day, turn off alerts on their phone and, if possible, check social media less often.
Take care of yourself. You have to be in good fighting shape to cope with the current problems. That means boosting your resilience (韧性) by taking care of your nervous system (sleep well, eat well, exercise wisely) and engaging in positive activities.
Focus on the present. Get in the habit of putting__yourself__in__the__here__and__now. Worrying about the future is not helpful.
Try a breathing exercise. Taking a few deep breaths—for instance, breathing in into the count of five and breathing out to the count of five—will help calm your sympathetic nervous system (the fight or flight response) and lower your anxiety. At the very least, breathing gives you something to do when you feel your heart rate pounding quickly.
Think about your victories. Remind yourself of what's working well in your own life—whether it's your job, friendships, or the array of houseplants you cultivated.
Be your own therapist. Ask yourself, what do I specifically feel hopeless about and why? Being able to put into words what's getting you down can help you feel less flooded by emotions and better able to process the information rationally (理性地).
Take action. Worrying doesn't help one's mental health, but taking action does. Look around your community. Maybe your local playground would benefit from a basketball court, or your church could sponsor a refugee family. When people engage in local issues, they have a renewed sense of optimism.
Join forces with a friend. Pick a cause. There are hundreds of nonprofits dedicated to addressing some of the most biggest challenges on the planet. Donate money to an inspiring organization or volunteer.

Cikgu Azam worked in an IT department. At the same time, he had a side job where he prepared activities for school children with special needs.
In 2007, during a program, he succeeded in helping a boy with cerebral palsy (脑瘫). “While I was assisting him, I could see the tears of joy coming from his parents who were there with us as well,” he said. “If you had more expert knowledge, you'd help more people,” his friends told him. With that, he went back to school to get a degree in special education.
In 2009, he became a special education teacher in a school. Trained to help students with cerebral palsy, when he came to the school in the first year, he was surprised to learn that he would also be teaching blind students. However, he did not back down in the face of such pressure and took the time to educate himself on what would best help his students.
“It's disappointing to see they are so used to their closed environment. It's not because they are disabled, but because they don't have the courage to explore the outside world that has caused them to be depressed.” He changed this by helping them run, simply putting his hands on their shoulders to guide them. One of his students, Nur Yusrina Alisya, won several awards in sporting events.
But as he's gotten older, it's difficult to keep up with them. “So, one day, I saw one student pushing a foldable trolley (推车) and the idea suddenly came to mind,” he said. Ever since then, Cikgu has made it his mission to create an even better device. He's built Caballus RAFVI which is named after a blind but brave horse. “My students need it so they can participate in sporting activities. I'll try to improve it,” he said. “I'm going to stick with my job though I'm getting older.”

The importance of goals
The importance of goals
As a saying goes, “Living without an aim is like sailing without a compass.” Obviously, goals play an essential role in our life.
In the first place, goals guide us towards where we want to head, providing a way to our successful journey. In addition, people who are aware of their goals tend to stay motivated and inspired when faced with adversity. Last but not least, we are becoming physically and spiritually fulfilled when focusing on our goals.
Hence, if you still don't have a goal, set an appropriate one and try to accomplish it.
As an old saying goes, we make a living by what we get, but make a life by what we give.
I truly believe that a job is definitely not a job if you love what you are doing. Many years ago, I worked in an employment and insurance office, which helps people find jobs, apply for employment and insurance, and return to school for training. What could be more rewarding than to help someone find a job or change their career?
I have always said that people are at their worst when they are unemployed or sick. I must admit that some days were challenging. But I have one amazing story that I would like to share.
One day, a lady came to the office with a dream to become a registered nurse. According to my client, her family did not approve. She was a mother with young children, and her husband had returned to school for training. It was not economically practical for her to return to school.
It was clear that this lady had a passion for the nursing profession, so I encouraged her to realize her dream. I equipped her with the information necessary to apply for nursing school, and she left the office. She went on her way, and I never knew whether she followed her dream or not.
Many years later, I was diagnosed with cancer of the stomach and was admitted to the hospital for an operation. I must admit I was scared. My mother had died of cancer at age forty. I had a husband and two beautiful children. I was only fortyeight years old. The surgery was successful. It was, however, very painful. Days flew smoothly as I recovered from the pain.
But one night the pain began growing stronger. A nurse was sent for special medical help. After that, I felt more relieved. “Thanks to your timely care, I feel much better,” I said gratefully to the nurse. “It is you that I should express my sincere thanks to actually. Remember the struggling mother many years ago?” she asked. Amazed and surprised, I recognized she was the young lady who had been interviewed by me. “How did you make it?” I asked, wondering how she pursued her dream.
“You never know what impact your encouraging words had on me,” the nurse said. She told me that she was determined to achieve her goal following my advice. Having overcome tremendous difficulties in economy and got support from her family, she returned to school for study and eventually fulfilled her dream as a registered nurse. So fantastic was this encounter. How blessed we were to have met each other! What could be more rewarding than to help someone fulfill their dreams? Helping others will benefit yourself as well.
Amazed and surprised, I recognized she was the young lady who had been interviewed by me.
I recognized she was the young lady,是“主谓宾”结构。Amazed and surprised是形容词作状语, she was the young lady是省略了连接词that的宾语从句,who引导定语从句。
