Before learning to paint, Li always felt lonely in a silent world. She knew she was different from her peers because she could not hear. But a painting class in primary school opened for her a door to creativity and a way of expression. “I still remember my first mural, which was to help a kindergarten to design and paint its wall,” Li says. “The project made me realize how happy I was immersing myself into painting.” To pursue her passion for art, Li went to study advertising design at a vocational and technical school. “Painting brushes can help me create a colorful world in my imagination, telling my thoughts on paper, instead of through voices,” Li said. Graduating from college in 2005, Li got a job as a typist at a public institute. But she could not communicate well with her other colleagues. Her husband understood how she felt because he lost his hearing due to medication when he was 1 year old. He is also an art lover. In March 2016, under her husband's suggestion, Li quit her job and joined her husband's company, which specializes in 3D wall and ground paintings. Wall painting is a demanding job because it requires people to work outdoors, whether in extremely cold or hot weather. As all the people are hearingimpaired in their company, communication with clients is the most common challenge that the team faces. Now in many parks and scenic spots, the couple have created largescale murals and interactive pavement painting that make onlookers a part of the drawings. “My husband and I want to introduce painting to more people like us and help them find their own way to make a living,” Li says. Now Li has an apprentice who just graduated from college. While coaching the newcomer, Li is exploring her own style and hopes to become an illustrator and open her own exhibition one day. “They're energetic young people with a passion to create new things, and you can feel that in their paintings,” one of their clients said. “They're also a professional, dedicated team, often working late into the night on the designs for us.” Li hopes that their stories can encourage more hearingimpaired people to build their own careers and achieve their goals, regardless of how tough it may be. 1.According to the passage, the painting class in primary school ________. I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my friends, Santa Claus would come down one's chimney and put toys in one's stocking on Christmas Eve! What a great country, I thought. After I looked up “stocking” in my ChineseEnglish dictionary, I knew what I had to do and always expected that day. Finally, the big day came. On that wonderful night, after everyone went to bed, I sneaked out of bed, took my longest, cleanest knee sock and attached it to a nail already on the mantel (壁炉). Obviously, the previous owners of this house were no strangers to this Santa character. Gazing at the sock and imagining the delicatelypacked gift in it, I couldn't help giggling (咯咯笑). For the first time, I found it hard to fall asleep. And for the first time, I woke up before everyone else in the early morning. Then I headed straight to the fireplace and was even ready for what to say after seeing the gift. However, what happened next was the least thing I wanted to mention. On the nail was the empty and lonely sock. I was hit with the reality of the empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I tried my best to hold back my tears but failed. Bursting into tears, I quickly took down the sock and stuffed it in the back of a drawer. Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up, and I would amuse my friends with my poorlittleme story. I had to make it as funny as possible, or else I would cry once again. I didn't know whether any of my audience ever noticed the sparkling tears hidden in my eyes. How could I know that Santa was just late? Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, I heard a knock on the door when I was watching TV. Unwillingly, I dragged my feet and opened the door. Outside the door stood an old man with a white beard and a red cap, holding a wellpacked box. Wearing a radiant smile, the man reached out his hands, passed the box to me and grinned “Christmas gift for you”. Shocked at the unexpected guest and gift, I was at a loss what to say. The moment he blended into the darkness, I untied the ribbon with heart thumping wildly. Inside the box lay a teddy bear I had longed for with an attached card. Once again, I couldn't contain my tears. Through tearblurred eyes, I recognized the handwriting on the card. It was a friend of mine and I later discovered that the man was her father. She was one of the audience of my sad story. The card read: “Sorry, I'm late. Merry Christmas.” I wiped away tears, held the box tightly and felt a surge of warmth. Christmas memories of this year wouldn't be a bitter joke. Instead, it was a miracle which witnessed a healed heart. So now I believe Santa is real. This Santa doesn't come down our chimneys, but lives inside good and thoughtful people who really listen to friends, and then plan deliberate acts of kindness. After I looked up “stocking” in my ChineseEnglish dictionary, I knew what I had to do and always expected that day. I knew what ... expected that day,为“主谓宾”结构。 课时作业(二) 较易题(占比30%) 中档题(占比50%) 拔高题(占比20%) 题号 Ⅰ Ⅱ Ⅲ Ⅳ Ⅴ A B 难度 ★ ★ ★★ ★★ ★★★ ★★ Ⅰ根据语境及汉语提示和首字母提示完成句子 1.The lady gained a ________ (名誉) as a brilliant designer. 答案:reputation 2.We guarantee to refund your money if you're not delighted with your ________ (购买的东西). 答案:purchase 3.I didn't like him at first, but in the end I actually got quite f________ of him. 答案:fond 4.We know that taste in art is a s________ matter. 答案:subjective 5.His followers believe they are fighting for a n________ cause. 1.Could you convey a message ________ Mr Merrick for me, please? 答案:to 2.We haven't been able to find a ________ (purchase) for our house yet. 答案:purchaser 3.Unfortunately, I misjudged the timing of my ________ (emerge). 答案:emergence 4.I'm a ________ (realistic)—I know you can't change people overnight. 答案:realist 5.Don't stick too ________ (precise) to what it says in the book. Having failed my French exams, ____________________________. 答案:I decided to concentrate on science subjects 2. ____________________ and pursued her passion in college—later, working for a newspaper. 答案:Mary was fond of writing 3. (as引导原因状语从句) Everyone likes you ________________________. 答案:as you are both kind and honest 4. (while引导让步状语从句) ________________________, I don't have much time available. 答案:While I am willing to help 5. His ambition is ____________________. 答案:to sail around the world Ⅳ 阅读 A (2024·河北省唐山市高二下月考) Showing the rites (仪式) stuff Nearly a hundred objects of historical value from the Confucius Museum are now on show at the exhibition, Rites, Music, and Costumes, which runs until May 26 at the China National Silk Museum, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. She didn't like it at first: the “novice artists”—the kids who hadn't really done art before—worked mostly with clay, and Kelly was a terrible sculptor. It wasn't until her third year that Kelly found something she was really good at—charcoal drawing (素描). She loved watching the lines spread unevenly across the page as she moved the bits of charcoal back and forth over the paper. One day, Sophia, the best artist in her class, sat down and set up her easel (画架) next to Kelly. Kelly felt a sinking feeling in her stomach. She'd actually found an art form that she enjoyed and was good at—and now Sophia was going to outshine her again? Kelly fought back tears when Miss Grace entered the room. “Hello class,” Miss Grace said. “We'll continue to work on the project today.” What masterpiece would Sophia have come up with? Kelly looked at Sophia's easel and she couldn't believe it—it was a mess! For a brief moment, Kelly couldn't actually believe her drawing was better than Sophia's. But then she looked at Sophia, who was watching Kelly with an anxious expression. “I ... I couldn't decide what to do,” Sophia said. “And you're so good. Sometimes I feel like my stuff is just so bad in comparison.” Kelly looked to see if Sophia was joking, but she seemed completely serious. Now Kelly was shocked. “I'm not talented ... Miss Grace seldom praises me. You're the best one in our class!” Sophia raised her eyebrows. “I might be a really good copier of the stuff, but I have no idea what to do when it comes to making up my own images. You are so great at making new things out of the old stuff. I've loved your works.” “I've loved yours, too,” Kelly said. “Well, definitely not this one,” Sophia said. Kelly smiled. “Maybe not right now. But if you move these lines up ... ” she said, pointing her finger on Sophia's paper. Sophia was quiet for a moment. “That's a great idea!” she said finally. Kelly smiled and turned back to her drawing, looking every so often at Sophia's work to see that she was taking her advice, down to the last line. 4.When Kelly started classes at the art school, she ________.
