The Little Prince was written and illustrated by the French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry during World War Ⅱ. It is a children’s fantasy book, but it is also enjoyed by adults.
It tells a story about a pilot who has crashed in the desert.
While he is trying to fix his aeroplane, a little prince comes to him. Visiting from another planet, the little prince recounts his adventures to the pilot, and the two become friends.

1. Before you read
Before you read考虑清楚要在book review中总结和评价的要素,尤其注意:
Author:作者是什么人?他写作的主要风格是什么?
Genre:这部作品是小说、散文、传奇、诗歌还是其他文体?
Title:标题如何在内容中被引出,如何在内容中表现的?是否提炼出了内容的中心思想?标题是否有趣,吸引人?
Preface/Introduction/Table of Contents:
作者在前言和简介中透露出了什么重要内容?是否有其他嘉宾来替作者作序?作者或嘉宾在前言中对这个作品发表了怎样的见解?这个作品是怎么组织起来的?
Book jacket/Cover/Printing:
封套上的文字就是对这部作品的简短介绍,对你有没有什么启发?
2. As you read
在你阅读后,要思考book review的总结或背景或介绍要怎样写,并开始对书中的人物、情节和关键语句做笔记。
Characters:
书中有那些人物?主要人物有哪些?他们如何影响了作品中的内容?你是否跟他们有共鸣?
Themes/Motifs/Style:
作品中的主题主旨是什么?主旨是否给人留下深刻印象?对作者的写作风格有什么评价?
Argument:
作品中的论点是如何提出的?作者为论点提供了那些论据?
Key ideas:
作品的中心思想是什么?这个中心思想是因为什么原因让作品变得出色/与众不同/富有开创性?
Quotes:
作品中都引用了那些语句或文章?通过这些引用你对作者的才华或作品的品味有什么看法?
3. When you are ready to write
在book review的开头对作品的内容做一个简要的介绍,不要用太长的篇幅。
Establish a background:
注意这篇book review的读者可能没有看过作品,所以要为他们介绍书中的主要人物、主要情节和中心思想。介绍怎样才会引起读者的兴趣?介绍是否确保读者能明白作品的内容?介绍会不会让读者认为作品太过浅显?
Principles/characters:
主要挑出主要的人物与情节介绍与分析即可,不必全盘介绍。对于介绍的主题与人物,你的看法是什么?是否同意这些主题?
Organize:
注意book review的目的是要你对作品做出评价,而不是单纯介绍作品。所以要控制介绍作品和评价作品的比例,一般来说比例是一半一半。

可以在下列的问题中挑出几个来进行讨论。
你喜欢这部作品的哪些部分?
这部作品与作者的其他作品或者同类型作品如何比较?作品的主题是否有力?从感性和理性上来讲你是否喜欢这部作品?
4. Final copy
写完初稿之后,再按照下面的问题检查一遍:
作者姓名、主要人物姓名、专用词等基本信息不要出错。
站在读者角度思考,book review简介是否太多或太少?你的分析是否有道理?
是否需要直接引用作品中的语句来帮助你表达自己的观点?如果需要的话,一定要注意引用的语句是否正确。
Moby Dick was written by American author Herman Melville. It is a highly popular novel with readers around the world.
The novel is mainly about Captain Ahab and a huge white whale whose name is Moby Dick. Captain Ahab's only aim is to hunt down and kill Moby Dick because the whale bit his leg off some time before.
A sailor named Ishmael tells the story, which makes the novel unique. Moby Dick is considered as a classic American novel that contributed to the American Renaissance. It's a touching book really worth reading. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
