Basketball was invented by a Canadian doctor named James Naismith, who was born in 1861. 篮球是加拿大的一位名叫詹斯·奈史密斯的博士发明的,他出生于1861年。 (1) Canadian 此处用作形容词,意为“加拿大的;加拿大人的”。如, That man is a Canadian teacher. (2) who was born in 1861是一个非限制性定语从句。非限制性定语 从句起补充说明作用,省去后不影响主句的意思,并且常用逗号与主句分开,翻译时常译成并列的分句。如, We all like Bob very much, who is a lively boy. 2. Dr. Naismith divided the men in his class into two teams and taught them to play his new game. 奈史密斯博士把他的班里的男生分成两队,并教他们玩他的新运动。 (1) divide 及物动词,意为“分开;分散”,指把整体分成若干部分。divide...into 意为“把……分开”,其被动结构为be divided into,意为“被分为……”。如, Let’s divide ourselves into several groups. (2) teach sb. to do sth. 意为“教某人做某事”。如, My grandmother used to teach me to make cookies by hand. 3. At the same time, they need to stop the competing team from getting the ball into their own basket. 同时,他们需要阻止对方把球投到他们自己的篮筐里。 (1) at the same time 意为“同时”,其中same为形容词,意为“相同的”,使用时前面一般要加定冠词the。如, You should avoid making the same mistakes. (2) stop...from doing sth. 意为“阻止……做某事”。其同义短语为prevent/keep...from doing sth.。如,The guard stopped the stranger from getting into the hall. 【注意】在主动语态中stop...from doing sth.里的from可以省略,但在被动语态中不能省略。 如,The forest can stop the water (from) washing the earth away. 4. Basketball has not only become a popular sport to play, but it has also become a popular sport to watch. 篮球不仅已成为一项人们喜欢玩的运动,它也已经成为一项人们喜欢观看的运动。 not only…but also… 意为“不但……而且……”。如, Reading can not only increase our knowledge, but also bring us pleasure. 【注意】本结构在使用时要遵循以下原则: (1) 并列原则:not only...but also…为并列连词,用来连接两个并列成分(主语、谓语、宾语、表语、状语),也可以连接两个句子,强调后者,also可以省略。如, He not only writes well but also speaks fluently. (2) 主谓一致原则:not only...but also…连接两个并列主语时,谓语动词要和与其最近的主语保持人称和数的一致。如, Not only the students but also the teacher was against the plan. 5. Many young people look up to these basketball heroes and want to become like them. 许多年轻人钦佩这些篮球英雄,并且想成为像他们一样的人。 (1) look up to 意为“钦佩;仰慕”。其中to为介词,其后可接名词或代词作宾语。如, They look up to him for his knowledge. 6. These stars encourage young people to work hard to achieve their dreams. 这些明星激励着年轻人为实现他们的梦想而努力学习。 (1) encourage sb. to do sth. 意为“鼓励某人做某事”。encourage sb. in sth. 意为“在……方面助长某人的某种行为/鼓励某人”。如, The heroes encourage us young people to work hard for our country.
