Passage 1
Feel down? Hug a tree! Recently, many Chinese young people have turned to trees to help with their
stress. Hugging a tree may be easier for some people who do not enjoy the experience of hugging other
people, or being hugged by others. Although it sounds strange, theres a 1 behind the act of
tree-hugging. 2 help us feel good because they remind us of our place in nature.
It can be 3 by the “Biophilia Hypothesis” . Just being outside in nature has been shown to be
good for your mental 4 . It was pointed out by US scientist Edward Wilson in 1984. He said that
humans are born to love being around other living things. Humans love for nature is “in our DNA”. This
idea helps to explain 5 people prefer natural, green views to city views. Its also one of the 6 why
people love cute pets.
Some studies have looked into why tree-hugging can help with our health. 7 people hug trees,
they report feeling calmer and more 8 than those who do not. A study in 2021 reported that activities
can 9 hormone oxytocin(催产激素). Its responsible for feelings. The higher the oxytocin is, the
calmer and happier you may be. Hugging trees 10 only 21 seconds can lead to an increase in oxytocin.
Another factor called cortisol(皮质醇) is a sign of 11 . The brain produces more cortisol when the
person is worried, 12 , or very sad. Research shows that hugging trees helps cut cortisol production,
reduce blood pressure and lower the chances of having heart attack, which makes us 13 better.
Although hugging trees is 14 to us, its important to keep in mind that we shouldnt hurt nature
while doing it. Many small creatures live in trees—and they are too small to be seen. Youd better be gen-
tle when hugging trees— 15 like how you hug a friend.

Passage 4
What does the word ecology mean? It was 1 by Ernst Haeckel, a German biologist. He joined
two Greek words: oikos, meaning “house”, and logie, meaning “the study of” . Together they mean “the
study of the house”. The “house” Haeckel had in mind is our 2 , Earth. Earth is home for all living
things—humans, animals, plants, and even 3 microbes.

An ecologist once asked a boy what he thought it meant to protect the environment.
The boy said,“You go into the forest and look for 7 who wants to cut down a tree. You 8 his

2 to go green or to make a green building? A green building is designed in a way that is not 3 to the
environment. The building uses energy, water, and other 4 in ways that are good for the environment.
5 planning green buildings, architects(建筑师) must think about how to use energy, water,
and materials in an environment-friendly way. There are many ways to 6 energy. Architects can design
7 to use natural light. Buildings can also be made with solar or wind power to get energy from the sun
or the wind. To save water, green buildings can have 8 on the roofs to collect rainwater. Kitchens and
9 can have sinks(洗涤池) and toilets that save water. These areas will be designed in advance. As

recycled train cars and is powered 13 solar and wind power. The Academy of Sciences building in

in love with Journey to the West. My mom said I should spend more time playing outside. But I didnt want
to 12 the book.

Passage 7(优质原创)
Every year, many people drown(溺水) because there arent good tools to help them in time. Can we
1 a strong and helpful tool to save people by the river? This idea comes 2 Liu Tiancheng, a
student from Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province. The 13-year-old 3 invented a telescopic water rescue pole
(救援伸缩棒).
During the summer vacation of 2023, Liu did research in 4 such as Yangzhou, Wuxi and
Suzhou. He 5 that along the river banks in these cities, water safety tools are mainly lifebuoys(救生
圈). 6 they are useful for rescues near the bank, they cant help those far from the bank. Also, some
cities have rescue poles, but they are often very heavy and can reach 7 2 to 5 meters.
Pulling a line will cause a small 8 of dry ice to turn into air. This will make the rescue pole
become straight and 9 can spread to another length of 5 meters. It can be thrown into the water for
people in need to catch onto. At the same time, an alarm buzzer(警报器) will go off.
To make a water safety 10 thats both long and light, Liu came up with a rescue pole thats like a
fishing pole. When its folded, its less than 1 meter long, so its 11 to carry. When you spread the
rescue pole, it can 12 about 5 meters.
According to Liu, the tool 13 about 120 yuan. And only the dry ice bottle needs changing after
being used for a 14 time. “It can be used in different 15 and help in a big way,” he said.
