C The Summer Olympics in Paris is always impressive, but 2024 promised something extraordinary even before the games began — the seats you are sitting on! Made from locally recycled plastic, these seats are sustainability (可持续性) champions in their own right. The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics made history in terms of sustainability, as 11,000 stadium seats made entirely of recycled plastic are used during the water sports. The plastic used for the seats was collected from recycling bins in the Seine-Saint-Denis neighborhood, and 80% of the 100 metric tons needed for the seats came from this area. The collected plastic was cut and torn into small pieces, processed and turned into new material by a local recycling firm called Le Pavé. After the base materials are produced into plastic seats with different colors, the seats have gone through numerous tests, including mechanical resistance, fire resistance, as well as UV resistance. The recycled plastic chairs proved to be strong and durable, with producers reporting no problems in the production process. The use of recycled plastic seats is part of Paris and France’s commitment to sustainability, with the goal of reducing downstream emissions (排放) by 50% compared to the 2012 and 2016 games. Additionally, the city is working to fight against environment worsening by making the Seine River swimmable for the first time in decades, in an effort to host the triathlon (铁人三项) there. The recycled plastic seats not only promote sustainability but also raise awareness about waste recycling, with children being encouraged to throw their plastic bottles into appropriate bins. The Paris Olympics’ use of recycled plastic seats demonstrates the potential of a circular economy, where waste is repurposed and reused, ultimately reducing the amount of plastic waste in landfills and oceans. 8. What is special about the seats for the 2024 Paris Olympics? A. They won the championship in a competition. B. They are made with a mix of plastic types. C. They are made from recyclable plastic. D. They are produced from local raw materials. 9 Where was the plastic for the seats mostly collected from? A. Recycling firms. B. Local recycling bins. C. All over France. D. International suppliers. 10. What does the numerous tests mainly show in paragraph 3? A. The advantages of the seats. B. The production process of the seats. C. The difficulty of producing the seats. D. The significance of the plastic seats. 11. What is one of the goals of using recycled plastic seats at the Paris Olympics? A. To create continued economic growth. B. To reduce energy consumption. C. To attract more attention to the games. D. To contribute to environmental efforts. D Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test. That’s the finding of a new study. That memory impairment might be one side effect of the radiation (放射线) that phones use to keep us connected while we’re on the go. The teens took memory tests twice, one year apart. Nearly 700 Swiss teens took part in a test of figural memory. This type helps us remember abstract (抽象的) symbols and shapes, explains Milena Foerster. Each time, they had one minute to remember 13 pairs of abstract shapes. Then they were shown one item from each pair and asked to match it with one of the five choices. The study volunteers also took a test of verbal memory. That’s the ability to remember words. The two memory tests are part of an intelligence test. The researchers also surveyed the teens on how they use cell phones. And they got call records from phone companies. The researchers used those records to figure out how long the teens were using their phones. This allowed the researchers to work out how big radiation exposure (接触) each person could have got while talking. A phone user’s exposure to the radiation can differ widely. Some teens talk on their phones more than others. People also hold their phones differently. If the phone is close to the ear, more radiation may enter the body, Foerster notes. The teens’ scores in the figural memory tests were roughly the same from one year to the next. But those who normally held their phones near the right ears, and who were also exposed to higher levels of radiation, scored a little bit worse after a year. No group of teens showed big changes on the verbal memory test. Why might one type of memory be linked to cell phone use, but not another? Foerster thinks it could have to do with where different memory centers sit in the brain. The site that deals with the ability to remember shapes is near the right ear. 12. The underlined word “impairment” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean “_______”. A. result. B. damage. C. mistake. D. improvement. 13. Which of the following can be learned from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3? A. The teens took two types of memory tests four times in total. B. The teens needed to report the average time spent on their phones. C. Researchers paid little attention to the teens’ habits of using phones. D. The teens’ ability of remembering words is shown in figural memory test. 14. According to the study, teens who use their phones to their right ears a lot do worse in _______. A. matching numbers. B. reading signals. C. remembering shape. D. learning words. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Cell Phone Use and Safety Warnings. B. Facts About Cell Phone Use at School. C. Dangerous Levels of Cell Phone Use Among Teens. D. 9. Where was the plastic for the seats mostly collected from? 【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. Lin, had always been a cheerful girl, full of laughter. Her transition (转变) to senior high school was originally met with great enthusiasm (热情). She would come home every day, sharing with us tales of her new experiences, her friends and the fun news of high school life. But as weeks went by, she became quieter and something seemed to be troubling her deeply. My husband and I realized something was wrong. but we decided to wait until she was ready to open up. One evening, I prepared her favorite jiaozi for supper, hoping it would cheer her up. However, that night, it was different. She seldom touched it, lost in thought. After the meal. we gathered in the living room. a space where our family had shared many heart-to-hearts. The air was heavy with unspoken words. My husband and I exchanged a quick look before I decided to break the silence. I gently brought up the subject, “Lin, you seemed worried lately. Is everything okay at school? You know you can always open up to me and your dad.” Lin looked up. her eyes reflecting a mix of frustration (沮丧) and hopelessness. “Mom, I’m really struggling with physics. No matter how hard I try. I couldn’t understand it a little bit. I feel so lost.” she admitted, with her voice trembling slightly. My heart sank as I saw the sadness in her eyes. Physics had always been a challenging subject for her, but this time it seemed to go beyond the usual difficulties. Then I reached out, holding her hand and trying to offer comfort and said, “High school is a big step. and it’s okay to take some time to adjust (调整). The most important thing is that you’ve been honest about how you’re feeling.” My husband cut in, “We can work through this together. step by step. Remember, we are always here for you.” Then we offered her some practical advice. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Over the next few weeks. At school, she sought additional help from her physics teacher, who provided her with additional guidance. Lin also joined a study group with her classmates, where they solved difficult problems together and shared some study methods about physics. At home, my husband and I kept encouraging her and acknowledged every small victory in her understanding of physics. We could see her gradually but surely overcome her fear of physics. Finally came Lin’s final-term physics exam. The night before, she was understandably nervous, but there was a newfound confidence in her eyes. The day after the exam, Lin came home with a big smile. While she didn’t get the top score, she did much better than we expected. This achievement was more than just about the grade; it was about the journey she undertook to overcome her challenges. This small success brought not just relief but also a stronger bond in our family, united by our collective effort and belief in each other. 词汇激活 行为类 ①向某人寻求帮助:seek help from sb./turn to sb. for help ②继续:keep/go on ③克服:overcome/get over 情绪类 ①紧张的:nervous/tense ②高兴地:with a big smile/with pleasure 【点睛】 [高分句型1].
