Unit 3 On the move
(24-25高一上·江苏南通·期中)Many of us start exercising in the hope of losing unwanted pounds. Unquestionably, aiming to be more active is a good thing. But if the main reason is to lose weight, your resolution could very well come to nothing.
For starters, exercise is typically futile for weight loss. Take walking for example. A 150-pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That’s equal to one can of soda — not exactly a great return on your investment of time and effort. It’s much easier just to skip the soda.
When exercise is added to a diet, the results are equally unimpressive. Researchers found that a combination of dieting and exercising produced no greater weight loss than dieting alone after six months. At 12 months, the diet-and-exercise combination showed an advanced, but it was slight — about 4 pounds on average.
In studies where exercise has produced meaningful weight loss, participants burned at least 400 to 500 calories per session on five or more days a week. To achieve that, a 150-pound person would need to walk a minimum of 90 minutes or run 30 minutes per day. In short, sessions need to go well beyond what most of us are willing or able to do. And even if we manage to make that much effort, our bodies often compensate (弥补) by boosting desire for food and slowing down metabolism (新陈代谢), which over time limit how many pounds we lose.
When exercise fails to meet our weight-loss expectations, we often stop working out. Perhaps the biggest problem with exercising to drop pounds is that it turns physical activity into punishment — a price we have to pay for a slimmer body. How many times have you heard someone say “I’ll need to do extra exercise” after eating too much? We treat exercise as a form of self-punishment for being “bad”. In this case, we’ re unlikely to keep doing it for very long. The conclusion is that we’ re more likely to treat exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight.
1.What does the underlined word “futile” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Necessary. B.Fruitless.
C.Basic. D.Painful.
2.What happens when you run 30 minutes on a daily basis?
A.You might eat more than usual.
B.You will burn 500 calories a week.
C.You might have a higher metabolic rate.
D.You will lose about 4 pounds per month.
3.Compared with dieting alone, what can we learn about the combination of dieting and exercising?
A.It’s less effective than dieting alone.
B.It’s much more useful within six months.
C.It shows little advantage after six months.
D.It displays an impressive advantage after a year.
4.How can we keep exercising?
A.By lowering our expectations.
B.By focusing less on our weight.
C.By sticking to our exercise routine.
D.By paying more attention to our well-being.
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.C 4.D
根据划线词后文“Take walking for example. A 150-pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That’s equal to one can of soda — not exactly a great return on your investment of time and effort. (以步行为例。一个150磅的人步行30分钟,平均会消耗大约140卡路里。这相当于一罐苏打水——对你投入的时间和精力来说,回报并不大)”可知,步行30分钟所消耗的热量很少,回报并不大。这是对上文“For starters, exercise is typically futile for weight loss.(首先,运动对减肥通常是futile的)”观点的举例说明,由此推知,划线词意思为“无效的,徒劳的”,与Fruitless同义。故选B项。
根据第四段中“To achieve that, a 150-pound person would need to walk a minimum of 90 minutes or run 30 minutes per day. In short, sessions need to go well beyond what most of us are willing or able to do. And even if we manage to make that much effort, our bodies often compensate by boosting desire for food and slowing down metabolism, which over time limit how many pounds we lose. (要达到这个目标,一个150磅重的人每天需要至少步行90分钟或跑步30分钟。即使我们努力做到了这一点,我们的身体也往往会通过增加对食物的渴望和减慢新陈代谢来做出补偿)”可知,当你每天跑步30分钟,你的身体会通过增加对食物的渴望来做出补偿,即你可能会比平时吃得更多。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Researchers found that a combination of dieting and exercising produced no greater weight loss than dieting alone after six months. (研究人员发现,在六个月后,节食加运动的组合并没有比单独节食产生更大的减重效果)”可知,与单独节食相比,节食加运动的组合在六个月后几乎没有优势。故选C项。
4.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The conclusion is that we’re more likely to treat exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight.(结论是,当我们更关注自己的健康而不是体重时,我们更有可能积极地对待锻炼并真正去做)”可知,我们可以通过更关注自己的健康来保持锻炼。故选D项。
(24-25高一上·云南临沧·期中)Keeping a busy social life among lots of friends may keep people thinner than spending hours doing some exercises according to scientists. They say that socializing and meeting with friends help increase levels of brown fat in the body which burns calories to produce heat.
Living in an exciting social environment was found to reduce fat of mice by half over four weeks even if they ate more. US researchers say that social excitement catalyzes weight loss by turning white fat into brown. White fat stores calories and makes us fatter while brown fat burns energy to produce heat. Turning white fat into brown is extremely difficult normally, requiring long-term stay in cold conditions or exciting part of the body’s nervous system.
However, scientists from Ohio State University now think that having a busy social life is an even more effective way of changing white fat into brown. The team came up with their theory by studying the effects of various living environments on mice. Those who lived alongside a greater number of mice lost far more weight over the course of the study than their “couch potato” fellows.
Study author Dr. Matthew, whose team’s findings appear in the journal, said, “I’m still amazed at the degree of fat loss that occurs.” Explaining how new technology had threatened face-to-face socializing, he added, “It’s not just a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle and high-calorie foods but an increasing lack of social activities.” Co-author Dr. Lei Cao said, “Loneliness is a potential factor for cancer and death; it’s equal to cigarette smoking to a certain extent. Social activities are very vital.”
1.What information can we get from the first two paragraphs?
A.Social excitement helps gain more weight.
B.Brown fat can burn energy to produce heat.
C.Brown fat stores calories and makes us fatter.
D.It doesn’t take long to turn white fat into brown.
2.Which of the following words can replace the underlined word “catalyzes” in paragraph 2?
A.Destroys. B.Relieves. C.Harms. D.Aids.
3.Which of the following statements does the text support?
A.Dr. Matthew wasn’t convinced of the result.
B.The mice lacking social life lose more weight.
C.The research findings haven’t been published so far.
D.Levels of brown fat can be increased by socializing.
4.We can conclude from the text that ______.
A.cancer and death are mainly caused by lack of social life.
B.the fat in mice’s belly was reduced because of the relaxing environment.
C.surfing the Internet may influence people’s face-to-face communication.
D.a sedentary lifestyle and high-calorie food influence people’s social life.
根据第二段“US researchers say that social excitement catalyzes weight loss by turning white fat into brown. White fat stores calories and makes us fatter while brown fat burns energy to produce heat.(美国研究人员称,社交兴奋会把白色脂肪变成褐色脂肪,从而促进减肥。白色脂肪储存卡路里,使我们变胖,而褐色脂肪燃烧能量产生热量)”可知,褐色脂肪可以燃烧能量、产生热量。故选B。
2.词句猜测题。根据第二段画线词下文“White fat stores calories and makes us fatter while brown fat burns energy to produce heat.(白色脂肪储存卡路里,使我们变胖,而褐色脂肪燃烧能量产生热量)”可知,褐色脂肪能燃烧能量,帮助减少体重。
根据第三段“However, scientists from Ohio State University now think that having a busy social life is an even more effective way of changing white fat into brown.(然而,俄亥俄州立大学的科学家们现在认为,忙碌的社交生活是将白色脂肪转化为褐色脂肪的更有效方式)”可知,文章支持社交活动可以增提高褐色脂肪的水平的说法。故选 D。
根据最后一段“Explaining how new technology had threatened face-to-face socializing, he added, “It’s not just a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle and high-calorie foods but an increasing lack of social activities.”(在解释新技术如何威胁到面对面的社交活动时,他补充说:“这不仅仅是久坐不动的生活方式和高热量的食物,而是越来越缺乏社交活动。”)”
(24-25高一上·河南信阳·阶段练习)Breakdancing is becoming an Olympic sport after the organizers of the 2024 Paris Olympics suggested its being included in 2024. The other three sports — surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing — have been all included in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The organizers said the four sports had been chosen because they would reflect the city’s identity and help take the Olympics to the street. They said they wanted to deliver the Olympic Games that would keep up with the times, inspire new audiences and attract young people. Breakdancing is an example of a sport which can be played without the limitation of time and places in urban and other environments.
Breakdancing was one of the sports at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018, and now its popularity has greatly increased. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved the French suggestion and it can be formally added to the 2024 Paris Olympic sports programme.
Under new IOC rules first introduced to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Olympic host cities can select sports and propose them for inclusion in the Olympic Games if they are popular in that country. It is fortunate for breakdancing to be included as an additional sport in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, while karate isn’t so lucky,
Antonio Espinós Ortueta, the president of the World Karate Federation said, “Karate has grown rapidly over the last few years. We believed that it had met all the requirements and that it had the perfect conditions to be added to the sports programme. However, we have learned today that we still haven’t had the chance to prove its value as an Olympic sport.”
1.What is mentioned about the 2020 Tokyo Olympics?
A.It is much better organized. B.It has more sport events.
C.It attracts more foreign audiences. D.It spreads the local culture worldwide.
2.What can we learn about breakdancing?
A.It is the symbol of Paris. B.It attracts people of all ages.
C.It can be played anytime and anywhere. D.It was performed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
3.What does the IOC do in selecting sports?
A.It gives useful advice. B.It makes final decisions.
C.It offers enough support. D.It gives detailed explanations.
4.What can we learn from Antonio Espinós Ortueta?
A.He didn’t expect the final decision of the IOC.
B.He was confident about the future of karate.
C.It is too difficult for breakdancing to be included in Olympics.
D.It is impossible for karate to be performed in Olympics.
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.B 4.A

根据第二段“Breakdancing is an example of a sport which can be played without the limitation of time and places in urban and other environments.(霹雳舞是一种可以在城市和其他环境中不受时间和地点限制的运动)”可知,霹雳舞在任何时间任何地方都可以表演,故选C。
根据第三段“The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved the French suggestion and it can be formally added to the 2024 Paris Olympic sports programme.(国际奥委会(IOC)已经批准了法国的建议,它可以正式加入2024年巴黎奥运会的体育项目)”可推断,IOC有最后的决定权,故选B。
根据最后一段“We believed that it had met all the requirements and that it had the perfect conditions to be added to the sports programme. However, we have learned today that we still haven’t had the chance to prove its value as an Olympic sport.(我们相信它已经满足了所有的要求,它有完美的条件被添加到体育项目中。然而,我们今天了解到,我们仍然没有机会证明它作为奥运会项目的价值)”可推断,原来他们认为满足所有的要求,但是后来没有被选中,所以他没有预料到IOC最后的决定。故选A。

(24-25高一上·江西南昌·期中)The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day in primary school. Small for my age, and more of a book-lover than a sports-lover, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field Day, which focused on individual (个体的) skills, however, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch. When fall came, our backyard football games began with passing practice.
Once I got to seventh grade and went to middle school, our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games, speeding up my competitive fever. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team. And at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. As I attended college, my roommate and I even took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare money to use to join a gym.
So, though, it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation (基础) developed in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered necessary even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I’m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.

(24-25高一上·广东东莞·期中)At the office or in school, most people sit most of the day. For those hours of long - time sitting, there is now a healthy way to refresh body and mind. According to a study published in Sports & Exercise in January, we can enjoy health all round by walking for five minutes every half hour!
The research designed five exercise choices for participants who sat for eight hours. The participants were asked to take a minute’s walk after 30 minutes’ sitting, take a minute’s walk after 60 minutes’ sitting, take a five - minute walk every half hour, or take a five minute walk every hour. The last choice is no walking at all. The researchers then compared the participants’ health.
They found that five minutes of walking every half hour was good in blood pressure and blood sugar. Moreover, researchers become happier. “The effects on feeling and tiredness are important. People like to repeat behaviors that make them feel good and that are enjoyable,” the researcher Keith Diaz explained. As those feelings of getting up and moving around were positive, they could let to take more everyday walk.
But sitting all day at work has become accepted. To change this, Diaz is trying to explain to workers that moving during the day is good; a healthy worker is a more productive and satisfying boss.
When it comes to standing desks, he said, “I’m unsure whether there’s really strong scientific evidence that standing is really better than sitting. I worry people have this false sense that they’re healthy because they’re using this desk, and maybe they’ re not actually that much better.”
If you’re sitting and haven’t walked around for a while, get up! Treat yourself to an exercise “snack” and then take another one in a half hour. The benefits of a simple, easy five- minute walk are obvious!

根据第二段第一句“The research designed five exercise choices for participants who sat for eight hours.(这项研究为连续坐了八个小时的参与者设计了五种锻炼方式。)”及最后一句“The researchers then compared the participants’ health.(然后,研究人员比较了参与者的健康状况。)” 故选A项。
根据第四段“But sitting all day at work has become accepted. (但是整天坐着工作已经被人们接受了。)”,以及划线词后面内容“…, Diaz is trying to explain to workers that moving during the day is good; a healthy worker is a more productive and satisfying boss.( Diaz正试图向工人们解释,白天活动是好的;一个健康的工人是一个更有生产力和更令人满意的老板。)”
根据第五段““I’m unsure whether there’s really strong scientific evidence that standing is really better than sitting. I worry people have this false sense that they’re healthy because they’re using this desk, and maybe they’ re not actually that much better.”(‘我不确定是否有强有力的科学证据表明站立真的比坐着好。我担心人们有一种错误的观念,认为他们因为使用这种桌子而健康,但实际上他们可能并没有好多少。’)”可知,Diaz不确定是否有强有力的科学证据表明站立真的比坐着好即Diaz对站立办公桌的益处表示怀疑。故选B项。
4.推理判断题。根据最后一段“If you’re sitting and haven’t walked around for a while, get up! Treat yourself to an exercise “snack” and then take another one in a half hour. The benefits of a simple, easy five- minute walk are obvious! (如果你坐着有一段时间没有走动了,那就站起来吧!让自己享受一次运动“小吃”,然后每半小时再来一次。简单轻松的五分钟散步的好处是显而易见的!)”可知,本段主要是在建议人们多走动,享受运动带来的好处。故选C项。

A.To show her father’s guidance on sports.
B.To express her love for sports and fitness.
