B Does it really matter if we know how old animals are? To many scientists, it does. When studying animal populations, it is of great importance to scientists to know how many animals there are and how old they are. This information can help scientists learn which animals are thriving and which ones need more care and help. Scientists usually use the following ways to tell animals’ age. For many animals, their teeth can help scientists know their age. In some animals, some teeth don’t come in until a certain age. Take cows for example. Like humans, cows have two sets of teeth: milk teeth and permanent teeth. They normally get their first pair of permanent teeth when they’re two years old. Then they have the next pair at the age of three, the third pair at the age of four,… Hair and skin can also provide information about age. Some animals tend to get bad skin and gray hair as they get older. If you have an older dog, you may have noticed that its nose and mouth get grayer as it gets older. Animals' eyes and ears might also help scientists tell animals’ age. As animals get older, their hearing often becomes weak, and their eyesight might begin to fail. Scientists are continuing to discover new and more ways of telling the age of animals. Recently, scientists have learned that __________. That’s really good news! 49. A.the number of some endangered animals is getting larger and larger B. the latest operations could possibly help old dogs improve their eyesight C. they can tell the age of the humpback whales by checking their DNA D. hearing problems would no longer trouble aging animals with the help of new hearing aids C You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two singing opera in English instead of speaking poetic Chinese? Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions, written by Cao Xueqin (1715-1763). Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, the US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan in 2017. Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and writeres. Their understanding of both cultures helped them change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera. The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters. But opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a tragedy (悲剧) that everyone would understand. The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes (服装) and stage decorations. He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin showed up on stage, there was usually water around her on the stage. The creators thought the work of introducing a Chinese classic to Western audience was worth doing. Hwang told China Daily he was happy to “have made a contribution (贡献) to the land where my parents were born”. 53. Where was the opera first performed? A. In Beijing. B. In Changsha. C. In San Francisco. D. In Wuhan. 54. What do we know about A Dream of Red Mansions from Paragraph 4? A. It is mainly about the rise and greatness of the Qing Dynasty. B. It tells the happy-ending love story between Jia and Lin. C. The book is long and rich in characters. D. The book has seven characters in total. 55. The art director compared Lin to water probably because of her _________. A. dressing style B. character C. appearance D. life habits 56. What can we infer from the passage? A. A Dream of Red Mansions has been translated into English. B. Hwang’s parents were born in America. C. The English-language opera was on tour in the US. D. Timmy Yip knows a lot about Chinese culture as well as American culture. D Last year, a primary school in Jiangxi Province made a decision. It would no longer prepare meals in its own school kitchens. Instead, it would serve its students pre-made food(预制菜). The move quickly became a hot topic across the country. Many parents said that they were worried about food safety. Some of them even sent homemade meals to school at lunchtime every day. The Ministry of Education warns against introducing pre-made meals to schools. That’s mainly because there are not yet any national standards(标准) for such food. The market for pre-made meals has been developing quickly over the past few years. In 2022, there were more than 60,000 related companies in China. And the number is still growing. By 2026, the market will have reached more than one trillion yuan. What has made pre-made meals so popular? They have many advantages. They’re quick and convenient to prepare. They also have a long shelf life (保存期). However, parents’ worries are not without reason. Pre-made food may be acceptable every now and then, but few people eat it every day. Naturally, parents don’t want their children to do so, either. In fact, pre-made meals are all prepared by central kitchens. They’re not necessarily unhealthy compared with freshly cooked food. The problem is how to make sure these companies follow all the hygiene (卫生) rules when they cook and store food. For now, the pre-made food industry still has a long way to go. 57. Why is the Ministry of Education against pre-made meals? A. Because it thinks that pre-made food is not safe. B. Because pre-made meals are not as healthy as homemade meals. C. Because no national standards are set for pre-made food. D. Because pre-made meals are too expensive. 58. What are parents worried about when it comes to pre-made meals? A. The cost of the meals. B. The convenience of the meals. C. Food safety and the health influence on their children. D. The taste and types of the meals. 59. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Not all the companies follow the hygiene rules. B. Pre-made meals are as healthy as freshly cooked food. C. Pre-made meals are all prepared in school kitchens. D. The market of pre-made meals is a success. 60. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The fast development of the pre-made meal industry in China. B. The worries and challenges of introducing pre-made meals in schools. C. The advantages of pre-made meals for primary school students. D. The need for national standards for pre-made meals in schools. 五、信息还原(10分) Teachers are often considered to be engineers of the human soul. (61)__________. Nowadays more and more Western fans begin to learn the art. 七、阅读与回答问题。 (本题共5小题;每小题2分,共10分) A person who writes music is a composer. A composer thinks of a musical idea and writes it on paper for others to read. Instead of writing words, a composer uses musical notation(记号). Other people can read the notes and play them. When they do, they’re playing music that came from the composer’s imagination. Beethoven was a famous German composer. He was born in 1770 in Bonn and began learning the piano when he was only four. He also learned to play the violin. Beethoven visited Vienna, which was a very musical city, in 1787. Two other famous composers lived in Vienna at that time. Wolfgang Mozart and Joseph Haydn met Beethoven and gave his music high praise. Beethoven made friends in Vienna and returned there in 1792. He studied music with Haydn and lived in Vienna for the rest of his life. Beethoven was known as a great pianist, but he wanted to compose his own music. He always seemed to have musical ideas in his head. His notebooks show how hard he worked to get the music just right. He often wrote and then revised his music by scratching it out(勾划), so it is possible for us to see how he was thinking about the music. During the late 1790s, Beethoven began to lose his hearing. At first it was difficult for him to hear people and talk with them. Even when he became completely deaf, he did not stop creating music. He heard music in his mind even though he couldn’t hear it with his ears. Most people have heard of Beethoven's Symphony No.5, but they may not know he wrote it when he was growing deaf. Symphony No.5 starts like this:ta-ta-ta-TUM. Beethoven used this pattern over and over in his symphony.Try saying it aloud two times:ta-ta-ta-TUM, ta-ta-ta-TUM. 86. How does a composer communicate their musical ideas to others? 87. What two instruments did Beethoven learn to play at a young age? 88. When did Beethoven first visit Vienna,? 89. During the late 1790s, what difficulty did Beethoven face? 90. What can you learn from Beethoven? New Members Wanted!
