She was excited when she got her first big break with a part in the school play. She would play the role of a doctor. She would wear a long, white doctor's coat and carry a big bag that held a newspaper with blank(空白的) pages and a box of bandages(绷带). She could hardly wait to act in a real play on stage. 19 As the play came closer, Carmen began to worry about being on stage. She just couldn't remember her lines. She sat in her bedroom, saying the lines over and over again. They just wouldn't stick in her head. It would be terrible if she forgot her lines on stage. She thought for a long time and decided to give up the play. She still wanted to be in the play, but she didn't want to risk making a fool of herself on stage. Carmen walked into the kitchen and said she wouldn't be in the play. “Don't worry so much,” Carmen's father said. “You're a talented young girl. You are a natural performer.” “Yes,” her mother agreed. “You'll do better if you relax.” Carmen knew they were right, but she couldn't stop worrying. Suddenly, she had a great idea. She took out the newspaper and wrote all of her lines on the blank pages. Now she could look at the newspaper and no one would know she was reading her lines. This would help her relax. That day, Carmen went on stage. She said her first line. Then she said her next line. Carmen didn't look at the newspaper once. Remembering her lines was easy because she was relaxed. As a result, Carmen remembered everything. After the play, Carmen let out a long deep breath and smiled happily. Carmen's parents went backstage, and they rushed over to congratulate her on a job well done. “You are great!” her mother said as she hugged Carmen. “You are a star!” her father said proudly. 1.代词指代 What does the underlined word “They” refer to in Paragraph 2?___ A. I enticed(诱使) him to stay inside by joining him in an online game. After being mercilessly defeated(击败) by a more experienced player, I suggested that we relax for a while. 26 “Look, Aunt Alice,” he said excitedly as he ran over to me. “I found a kite. Could we go outside and fly it?” Glancing out of the window, I noticed there was not a breeze(微风) stirring. “I'm sorry, Peter,” I said. “The wind is not blowing today. The kite won't fly.” “I think it's windy enough, and I can get it to fly,” he answered confidently as he hurried out of the door. I looked out of the window to watch him. Up and down the yard he ran, pulling a small length of string attached to the kite. The plastic kite remained about his shoulder level. He ran back and forth, looking back hopefully at the kite trailing behind. After about ten minutes of unsuccessful efforts, he came back in. I asked, “How did it go?” “Fine,” he said, not wanting to admit(承认) defeat. “I got it to fly some.” As he walked past me to return the kite to the shelf, he looked upset, saying under his breath, “I guess I'll have to wait for the wind.” And it dawned on me how easy it is for us to depend only on our own efforts to complete what we want to do. We wait for the “wind” only after we have used up our own strength. Sometimes, what we need is just a little outside help. 28 1.Why didn't the writer advise her nephew to go outside to fly a kite?___ A. Because she hoped her nephew could stay indoors to relax. B. It was all about memorizing(熟记) facts: the order of the planets, the names of clouds, the parts of a cell. So I decided to become a novelist when I grew up. I spent all my free time reading and writing. However, everything changed in my first year of middle school. As a person who liked keeping things organized, I fell in love with the periodic table(元素周期表). And it led me to basic physics and chemistry. Science still meant memorizing facts, but suddenly, they were much more interesting facts. 32 Then I had a problem. I wasn't that interested in becoming a novelist any more, and I really liked science. But at my school, all the best science students went on to be doctors. I was always afraid of blood. Become a doctor? That was the last thing I wanted to do! But at the same time, I developed an interest in the environment. A group of students in the year above mine had started an environmental club. Once a week, I went to school extra early in the morning to attend their club meetings. 33 In the summer of that year, we attended some courses on climate change. The climatologists(气候学家) talked about many different things. I took notes in a tiny notebook as fast as I could. For the first time, I learned about the use of the periodic table. It brought me joy and excitement, and I dreamed of becoming a climatologist myself. Now, eleven years has passed, and this dream has come true. I'm deeply interested in the climate system. The villagers asked him to leave, for they feared he wanted them to give him food. They told him that there was no food. The traveler explained that he didn't need any food and that, in fact, he was planning to make a soup to share with them instead. The villagers watched doubtfully as he built a fire and filled a pot with water. 38 With a great ceremony(仪式), he pulled a stone from a bag and dropped the stone into the pot of water. After a moment, he smelt the soup and shouted with excitement, “How delicious the soup is!” As the villagers began to show interest, he mentioned how good the soup would be with just a little cabbage in it. A villager brought out a cabbage to share. This episode(情节) repeated itself until the soup had cabbage, carrots, onions, and beets—indeed, a full pot of soup that could feed everyone in the village was ready. This story describes when there are not enough resources(资源), humans will store things and don't want to share. The story of stone soup helps us realize that, in doing so, we often stop ourselves and everyone else from having a feast(盛宴). The meaning of this story goes far beyond food. We keep to ourselves ideas, love, and energy, thinking we will be richer, but in fact we make the world, and ourselves, poorer. The traveler was able to see that the villagers were holding back, and he had the ability to inspire (激发) them to give. In this way, they created a large meal that none of them could have created alone. Are you like one of the villagers? If you come forward and share your gifts, you will inspire others to do the same. The reward is a feast that can feed many. 1.Why did the traveler put a stone into the pot?( ) A. To teach the villagers to cook a soup with stone. B. When Michael entered junior high, he joined an orchestra and band and learned to play many instruments. He was just 12 years old when his teacher asked him to compose and conduct a concert piece. And that was only the beginning. Throughout high school, he continued to develop his artistic talent, and after graduating, he headed to Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Morgan works on offering kids a chance to explore classical music. In his hometown of Oakland, California, he started to volunteer in local schools, conducting student orchestras and talking with kids about music. Later, Morgan developed MUSE(Music for Excellence), a music education program for kids. He brings musicians from Oakland Symphony(交响乐团) into classrooms to teach kids. He also works with teachers in after-school programs to teach students who can't afford lessons. Morgan says his work is mostly about providing young people with an entrance into music. “Playing instruments is a way for kids to express their feelings and gives them an interest they can carry with them through life,” he says. 1.图片理解 What did Michael's father take home from the neighbor's house?___ 2.When did Michael begin to learn how to conduct?___ A. Do you wonder why they wear them? Let me show you the secrets. People may think pirates wear eye patches because they lose an eye or try to look cool. However, the eye patch most likely has nothing to do with a missing eye, but with being able to see clearly—especially above decks(甲板) and below them. 52 Jim Sheedy, a Doctor of Vision Science(视觉科学), told the Wall Street Journal that our eyes can adapt(适应) quickly when going from darkness to light, but it can take up to 25 minutes for them to adapt when going from bright light to darkness. Pirates always had to move above and below decks on their ships, from daylight to near darkness. Doctor Sheedy says the smart pirates wear an eye patch over one eye to keep it dark-adapted outside. When pirates go below decks, they can change the patch to the outdoor eye and see in the darkness easily. It also helps them fight the enemies below decks when they take up their ships. Though we can't find clear proof(证据) from history, there's no doubt that keeping one eye dark-adapted really works. Some researchers tested this in 2007 and believed that it worked. Even the FAA(美国联邦 航空管理局) agrees that “a pilot should close one eye when using a light at night to help keep their night vision in good condition.” 1.图片理解 Which of the following is an “eye patch” according to the text?___ 2.Why do pirates wear eye patches?___ A. It led me to buy matching shoes and earrings. This reminded me of the “birdcage effect”, a psychologicalphenomenon (心理现象) when getting one thing makes you want to get more things to go with it. 58 The story behind the “birdcage effect” is quite fascinating. One day, the psychologist James made a bet(打赌) with his friend Carlson, saying that Carlson would keep a bird soon. Hearing this, Carlson said, “Are you kidding? I have never had this idea.” Later, James gave Carlson a birdcage on his birthday. When friends who visited Carlson's house saw the cage, they all thought that Carlson had raised birds. Carlson was tired of explaining and finally he bought a bird. 59 As online shopping is popular today, the “birdcage effect” is more common especially among students. For example, a friend of mine wanted to buy a good pen to match a nice notebook. She believed it would make her enjoy reading and note-taking. ▲ However, she saw it differently. The beautiful notebook led her to get a good pen and a new book, then she started note-taking. She regarded it as a wonderful example. Later, I decided to use it positively as well. I bought a nice tablecloth for my desk and a beautiful notebook for my ideas. With everything ready, I found myself writing again. In life, we will meet many forms of the “birdcage effect”. If it leads to unnecessary spending, it's negative(消极的). We should stop it in time and keep a balance. But if it is positive and encourages us to grow and develop, we should see it as a chance to help us achieve our goals. 1.写作手法 How does the writer lead into the topic in Paragraph 1?___ A. You may have different answers. But we know that we can describe the earth's surface through landforms(地形).A landform is a natural mixture of rock and soil found on the earth. Landforms come in different kinds of shapes and sizes. The whole mountains, small hills, plateaus(高原), and plains (平原) are the four main kinds of landforms. A landform might be as large as a land or as small as a pool. 66 Landforms are made by some kinds of forces of nature. This force could be wind, water or ice. And it usually takes a very long time to form different landforms. It could be hundreds or thousands of years or even longer. For example, you may see many valleys(山谷). It used to be a high hill, but with time going by, water and wind wear down. .high land into a plain, and then create valleys. Many landforms are formed by water. Both processes happen over a long time, sometimes millions of years. 67 What are the differences among the landforms? Valleys are located between hills or surrounded by many high mountains. And there is usually a river at the bottom of a valley. A delta(三角洲) is another landform created by water. Deltas can be found at the mouths of rivers. They are created when sand, soil, and rock mix together. Hills and mountains are another two landforms. A hill is raised land. A mountain is usually higher with a top. They are not local to the UK, but they have become a problem there for they can harm the environment. They eat local insects and are dangerous to honey bees. One Asian hornet can kill as many as 50 honeybees in just one day. The first Asian hornet nest in the UK was discovered in 2016. Between 2016 and 2022, 23 Asian hornets have been found in the UK 72 including 13 nests. In 2023, there were 72 Asian hornet nests found in 56 places. Now, the UK's way to deal with Asian hornets is asking people to recognize(识别) and report them. However, most of these reports turn out to be other insects, not Asian hornets, so it's not a good way. Scientists from University of Exeter have created a smart tool to recognize Asian hornets. This tool uses artificial intelligence(AI). The new tool, called VespAI, uses a special cloth to attract(吸引) hornets. When the hornets come close, an automatic(自动的) camera takes photos of them. Then, AI goes through the pictures. When it finds an Asian hornet, a warning will be sent to a scientist. It works like a guard to tell people if Asian hornets have spread to a new area. Then, people can follow the hornets and destroy(摧毁) their homes before more hornets are born. Dr. Thomas said it won't mix up other insects with Asian hornets and won't miss the Asian ones. VespAI has already been tested on Jersey Island and will be tested in other places this year. 1.What is the main problem with Asian hornets in the UK?___ A. They eat honeybees. B. Unit 3 Life and Health D. Unit 4 The World of Science √ Passage 13 For the first time, scientists have grown seeds in samples(样本) of soil collected from Moon 50 years ago. Researchers at the University of Florida found that it was harder for the plants to grow in the lunar soil(月壤) than it was for them to grow in similar soils found on Earth. This could someday help people grow crops on the surface of Moon. 79 The team used three very small samples of dusty lunar soil, called regolith, which were gathered by astronauts on the Apollo 11, 12 and 17 missions of 1969 and 1972. The scientists planted seeds of a small flowering plant in each of the samples, as well as the soil from Earth. This small plant called thale cress is a member of the cabbage family. A number of factors(因素) including its short generation time(生长周期) make it widely used in scientific research. Although the thale cress sprouted(发芽) in all of the soils, the ones grown in Moon dust grew more slowly and showed more signs of stress. The plants also grew differently in each of the lunar soils. Researchers believe that's because the samples were collected from separated Apollo landing sites, where the soil had been on the surface for different lengths of time. The older the soil was, the worse the plants grew. This suggests that the longer the regolith has been exposed(暴露) to rays from Sun and outer space, the less welcom- ing it is for plants.
