I’m not a fan of patchwork quilts (拼缝被子). While I appreciate the feelings and effort put into making them, I usually don’t really care about the end result. Surprisingly, however, there is a small patchwork quilt in my home.
This quilt originally belonged to my mother. In her later years, after my father passed away, she joined a weekly ‘book club’ with some women from the neighborhood. In fact, it was more of an excuse to get together and drink coffee. One of the ladies, Emily, was skilled in handicrafts and she made my mother a small quilt.
For years, this quilt sat folded on a chair in my mom’s living room. It went with her when she moved to a small, one-bedroom suite at an assisted living facility (辅助生活机构). I never saw my mother use it throughout all those years.
During one of my visits, I playfully teased (取笑) my mom about her never using the quilt and asked her why she kept it. She said it was because it was a gift from Emily. I questioned further, as she was not particularly close to Emily and did not even like the quilt’s design. Her response remained the same: Because it was from Emily.
After thinking this over for several days, I came to realize that the quilt’s value did not lie in its appearance or in its maker, but rather in the significance it held for my mother about neighborliness, community and caring for one another.
I inherited (继承) the quilt more than a decade ago and it has remained folded on a shelf ever since. My plan is to one day gift it to my daughter, but I won’t pressure her to keep it, although I’m secretly hoping she will.
Patchwork quilts hold stories. The tales we attach to what we see and do enrich our lives, turning the ordinary into something magical.

58. Why did the author’s mother keep the quilt for years without using it?
A. She found it too beautiful to use.
B. She planned to give it to her daughter.
C. It reminded her of the weekly book club.

Antarctica (南极洲) is the coldest place on Earth. It's also the driest. With annual rainfall close to zero, Antarctica is technically a desert. Covering about 14 million square kilometers around the South Pole, it is the fifth largest continent in the world. A high mountain range, the Trans-Antarctic range, runs from east to west, cutting the continent in two. There are volcanoes too, but they are not very active. Antarctica holds 90% of the world's ice, and most of its fresh water (70%) is in a frozen state, of course. 98% of the surface is covered permanently in the ice cap. On average it is two kilometers thick, but in some places it reaches a depth of five kilometers. Strong winds driven by gravity blow from the pole to the coastline, while other winds blow round the coast. It is difficult to imagine a more inhospitable (不宜居的) place.
Yet Antarctica is full of wildlife, which has adapted to its extreme conditions. There are different types of penguins, flying birds, seals, and whales. But the long Antarctic winter night, which lasts for 182 days (the longest period of continuous darkness on earth) , as well as the extreme cold and lack of rainfall, means that few types of plants can survive there. Only two types of flowering plants are found, while there are no trees on the large continent. The rest of the plants are made up of mosses, algae and lichen. Some forms of algae have adapted to grow on ice.
Most of the ice has been there for thousands of years. As a result, it has become a window on the past, and can give researchers lots of useful information. Gases and minerals, in the form of volcanic dust trapped in the ice, can tell us a lot about what the world's climate was like in past ages. Antarctic rocks are also very important for research. Most of them are meteorites (陨石) from outer space. One rock, known as the “Alien” rock, may contain evidence of extra-terrestrial (外星人) life.
Antarctica was the last continent to be discovered. But more than two thousand years ago Greek geographers believed that there was a large land mass in the south which balanced the land in the north. They called it Anti-Arktikos, or Antarctica: the opposite of Arctic (北极) . When Europeans discovered the continent of America in 15 century, the great age of exploration began. However, progress to the South Pole was slow. Not until the late 18h century did the British explorer James Cook cross the Antarctic Circle, but he never saw land. Then in 1895, a Norwegian called Carstens Borchgrevink became the first man to set foot on the Antarctic mainland. The race to the pole had begun. It was finally reached on 11th December, 1911 by the Norwegian Roald Amundsen.
61. In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to _________.
A. tell us about the history of the discovery of Antarctica
B. tell us that Antarctica is completely covered in thick ice
C. introduce the distribution of fresh water in Antarctica
D. introduce the basic information about Antarctica
62. What does the author mainly want to tell us in Paragraph 2?
A. All Antarctic plants grow on ice.
B. Animals can't survive the Antarctic polar night.
C. Antarctica has a great variety of plants.
D. Despite the extreme conditions in Antarctica, many plants and animals live there.
63. What does the author intend to show with the example of the “Alien (外星人) ” rock?
A. There are aliens in Antarctica. B. Meteorites all contain evidence of alien existence.
C. There's a lot to study in Antarctica. D. Rocks are rare in Antarctica.
64 What could we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The Greek geographers found the Antarctica.
B. James Cook was the first explorer who reached the South Pole.
C. A Norwegian reached the South Pole first.
D. Humans first set foot on the Antarctic mainland in 1911.
65. What makes the best title for the passage?
A. A Race to the South Pole B. Antarctica: the Last Continent
C. The wildlife of Antarctica D. Antarctica: A desert

One of our biggest fears nowadays is that our kids might someday get lost in a “sea of technology” rather than experiencing the natural world. Fear-producing TV and computer games are leading to a serious disconnect between kids and the great outdoors, which will change the wild places of the world, its creatures and human health for the worse, unless adults get working on child’s play.
Each of us has a place in nature we go sometimes, even if it was torn down. We cannot be the last generation to have that place. At this rate, kids who miss the sense of wonder outdoors will not grow up to be protectors of natural landscapes. “If the decline in parks use continues across North America, who will defend parks against encroachment (蚕食)?” asks Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods.
Without having a nature experience, kids, can turn out just fine, but they are missing out a huge enrichment of their lives. That applies to everything from their physical health and mental health, to stress levels, creativity and cognitive (认知的) skills. Experts predict modern kids will have poorer health than their parents — and they say a lack of outside play is surely part of it; research suggests that kids do better academically in schools with a nature component and that play in nature fosters (培养) leadership by the smartest, not by the toughest. Even a tiny outdoor experience can create wonder in a child. The three-year-old turning over his first rock realizes he is not alone in the world. A clump of trees on the roadside can be the whole universe in his eyes. We really need to value that more.
Kids are not responsible. They are over-protected and frightened. It is dangerous out there from time to time, but repetitive stress from computers is replacing breaking an arm as a childhood rite (仪式) of passage.
Everyone, from developers, to schools and outdoor citizens, should help regain for our kids some of the freedom and joy of exploring, taking friendship in fields and woods that cement love, respect and need for landscape. As parents, we should devote some of our energies to taking our kids into nature. This could yet be our greatest cause.
66. The main idea of Paragraph 2 is that ________.
A. kids miss the sense of wonder outdoors
B. parks are in danger of being gradually encroached
C. Richard Louv is the author of Last Child in the Woods
D. children are expected to develop into protectors of nature
67. According to the passage, children without experiencing nature will ________.
A. be less healthy both physically and mentally
B. be over-protected by their parents
C. keep a high sense of wonder
D. change wild places and creatures for the better
68. According to the author children’s breaking an arm is ________.
A. the fault on the part of their parents
B. the natural experience in their growing up
C. the result of their own carelessness in play
D. the effect of their repetitive stress from computers
69. What does the underlined word “cement” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Weaken. B. Strengthen. C. Lower. D. Decease.
70. In writing this passage, the author mainly intends to ________.
A. blame children for getting lost in computer games
B. encourage children to protect parks from encroachment
C. show his concern about children’s lack of experience in nature
D. inspire children to keep the sense of wonder about things around
第II卷 (非选择题, 共35分)
第四部分: 阅读表达(共5小题:每小题2分,10分)
阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
Kristin Schell is the founder of The Turquoise Table, a movement of ordinary people who want to create community right in their own front yards. Ten years ago, she and her family moved to a new home in Austin, Texas.
One day, Kristin tried to connect with her new neighbors by hosting a party. She bought a few picnic tables but the delivery driver set one table down in her front yard by mistake. “After the party, I painted the table turquoise — my favorite color — and put it in the front yard, just a few feet from the sidewalk,” she says.
That turquoise table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks.
Neighbors began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat. Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea. Then neighbors asked Kristin if their family could put a picnic table in their front yard too. A movement was born. “It was a simple way to slow down and connect with others,” she says. The turquoise table was inviting and had a shared feel.
People often hesitate to invite others into their homes. They think their house is too messy, it’s not big enough or they don’t have enough time. “Our perfectionism can cause us to miss out on the joy of connecting with others,” Kristin says. Her picnic table takes away the excuses — and the pressure.
She likes how it enables her to take a small step toward easing loneliness and building relationships in her community. “People’s greatest need is to know that they are loved and that they belong,” she says.
A decade after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Tables exist in all 50 states and in 13 countries around the world. Not all of them are actually turquoise. “No matter what color it is, it’s a friendship table,” Kristin says.

M: I’m a freshman, so it’s about ten to twenty hours. I need money badly. My parents are retired, so I need to support myself for my study.
W: I advise you to take baby steps while you get used to university life. You’ve got to learn how to balance your study, work and free time.
M: Okay. So what you recommend? Is there a job I can do?
W: Now I would suggest something that’s about a few hours a week to start with. That’s say two hours a night, three nights a week. The other thing I recommend is to get something that gives you time to study while you’re working.
M: Great! What kind of job lets me study while I work?
W: How about something in the library? You can study there.
M: How much does it pay?
W: It pays ten dollars an hour, so if you work six hours a week, you’ll pocket sixty dollars.
M: All right. Um, the library sounds fun, but could I check out some other jobs before I decide?

64. What could we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The Greek geographers found the Antarctica.
B. James Cook was the first explorer who reached the South Pole.
C A Norwegian reached the South Pole first.
D. Humans first set foot on the Antarctic mainland in 1911.
65. What makes the best title for the passage?
A. A Race to the South Pole B. Antarctica: the Last Continent
C. The wildlife of Antarctica D. Antarctica: A desert
【答案】61. D 62. D 63. C 64. C 65. B

68. According to the author, children’s breaking an arm is ________.
A. the fault on the part of their parents
B. the natural experience in their growing up
C. the result of their own carelessness in play
D. the effect of their repetitive stress from computers
【答案】66. D 67. A 68. B 69. B 70. C
根据第二段中“Each of us has a place in nature we go sometimes, even if it was torn down. We cannot be the last generation to have that place. At this rate, kids who miss the sense of wonder outdoors will not grow up to be protectors of natural landscapes.(我们每个人在大自然中都有一个地方,我们有时会去,即使它被拆毁了。我们不能成为拥有这个地方的最后一代人。照这样下去,失去户外奇妙感的孩子长大后就不会成为自然景观的保护者)”可知,本段作者暗含的中心观点应该是孩子们被期望成长为大自然的保护者。故选D项。
【67题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Without having a nature experience, kids, can turn out just fine, but they are missing out a huge enrichment of their lives. That applies to everything from their physical health and mental health, to stress levels, creativity and cognitive skills. Experts predict modern kids will have poorer health than their parents — and they say a lack of outside play is surely part of it; research suggests that kids do better academically in schools with a nature component and that play in nature fosters leadership by the smartest, not by the toughest.(没有大自然的体验,孩子们可以过得很好,但他们错过了丰富他们生活的巨大机会。这适用于他们的身体健康和心理健康,压力水平,创造力和认知技能。专家预测,现代的孩子会比他们的父母健康状况更差,他们说缺乏户外活动肯定是其中的一部分原因。研究表明,在有自然元素的学校里,孩子们在学业上表现得更好,在自然中玩耍可以培养最聪明的人的领导力,而不是最强硬的人)”可推知,没有经历过自然的孩子将会比他们的父母健康状况更差,这适用于他们的身体健康和心理健康。故选A项。
【68题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段中“One of our biggest fears nowadays is that our kids might someday get lost in a “sea of technology” rather than experiencing the natural world. (我们现在最大的恐惧之一是,我们的孩子可能有一天会迷失在“科技的海洋”中,而不是体验自然世界)”和倒数第二段中“Kids are not responsible. They are over-protected and frightened. It is dangerous out there from time to time, but repetitive stress from computers is replacing breaking an arm as a childhood rite of passage.(孩子们不负责任。他们受到过度保护和惊吓。这有时是危险的,但来自电脑的重复压力正在取代折断手臂,成为童年的成人礼)”可知,儿童们沉浸在科技的海洋中,正在失去自然体验,可得出作者认为儿童的折断手臂指的是他们成长过程中的自然经历,故选B项。
【69题详解】
词句猜测题。根据前文“Everyone, from developers, to schools and outdoor citizens, should help regain for our kids some of the freedom and joy of exploring, taking friendship in fields and woods(每个人,从开发商,到学校和户外市民,都应该帮助我们的孩子重新获得探索的自由和快乐,在田野和树林中建立友谊)”可知,此处讲述了每个人应该帮助孩子回到自然环境,去体会自然的快乐,因为这是有好处的,再根据后文“love, respect and need for landscape”可知,cement应该有利于对景观的热爱、尊重和需求,可推知,cement正面的意思,结合选项,应该和B项Strengthen“加强”意思相近。故选B项。
【70题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“One of our biggest fears nowadays is that our kids might someday get lost in a “sea of technology” rather than experiencing the natural world.(我们现在最大的担忧之一是,我们的孩子有一天可能会迷失在“科技的海洋”中,而不是去体验自然世界)”以及后文,主要在讲述,孩子脱离自然后的坏处,可知,本文作者主要是想表现出他对孩子们缺乏自然经验的关心。故选C项。
