It takes place on Castle Terrace every Saturday and attracts a huge crowd with its locally sourced goods. The market is now in its 15th year and champions the very best in Scottish produce. Billingsgate Fish Market This hub in the heart of the East End of London is the biggest inland market in Britain. Dating back to the 16th century, Billingsgate is now served by almost every UK port, with fish transported through the night to arrive for trading, which starts at 4 a.m.. It is famed for shifting 25,000 tons of fish each year. Most people have never heard of him. But Berzsenyi has had a remarkable impact on American science and mathematics. He has mentored (指导) thousands of high school students, some of whom went on to become the nation’s top mathematicians and scientists. I learned about Berzsenyi from a chance conversation with a scientist named Vamsi Mootha. In the late 1980s, when Mootha was in high school in Beaumont, Texas, he won a science fair. A few days later, a letter arrived in the mail. “It said, ‘Dear Mootha, congratulations on winning the Houston Science Fair; this is quite the accomplishment’,” Mootha recalls. “But then when I started reading the next paragraph, I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach,” Mootha says. The letter went on to say that the math problem young Mootha solved to win the fair had been solved hundreds of years earlier. Mootha said, “Of course, the letter went on, ‘You can’t be expected to know this because you’re only a sophomore (二年级学生) in high school, and perhaps you haven’t had the appropriate mentorship... If you’re interested in solving original problems, you can write back to me’.” The letter was signed by George Berzsenyi. At the time, Berzsenyi was a math professor at Lamar University in Beaumont. Mootha says the letter upset him because he thought he had discovered something new. But then he decided to take up his offer and write back to him. They got together, and the older mathematician and the young genius hit it off. Berzsenyi would give Mootha those original problems to solve and an appreciation for mathematics. “He also sort of instilled (逐渐灌输) a love for mathematics and a love for sort of elegant mathematics that made sense to me,” Mootha says. Eventually Mootha headed off to Stanford University, then Harvard medical school where he works today. A half-dozen or so years ago, Mootha found out he had a lot of company in being mentored by George Berzsenyi. 4. What may be George Berzsenyi’s greatest accomplishment? A. Solving the most challenging math problem worldwide. B. Changing the public’s attitude towards American science. C. Being considered the best mathematician of his country. D. Mentoring the best mathematicians and scientists nationwide. 5. What’s George Berzsenyi’s main purpose in writing to Mootha? A. To offer Mootha guidance. B. To laugh at Mootha for his mistake. C. To congratulate Mootha on his achievement. D. To discuss with Mootha about some original problems. 6. How did Mootha react to the letter in the end? A. He decided to fight back. B. He became very interested. C. He became greatly discouraged. D. He decided to prove he was right. 7. What do we know about Mootha from Paragraph 5? A. He didn’t get along well with Berzsenyi. B. He fell in love with mathematics as a little child. C. He didn’t think elegant mathematics made sense. D. He changed his attitude towards math because of Berzsenyi. 4. D 5. A 6. B 7. He has mentored (指导) thousands of high school students, some of whom went on to become the nation’s top mathematicians and scientists. 根据第三段“If you’re interested in solving original problems, you can write back to me(如果你对解决原始问题感兴趣,你可以给我回信。)” 故选A。 根据第四段“But then he decided to take up his offer and write back to him.(但后来他决定接受他的提议,给他回信。)” 根据第五段““He also sort of instilled (逐渐灌输) a love for mathematics and a love for sort of elegant mathematics that made sense to me,” Mootha says. D。 Maria is a 10-year-old elementary school student who comes home with ringing in her ears — a sign of hearing loss — after attending a program in her school hall. There are “Marias” in every school in the US. Twenty percent of American kids will suffer permanent hearing loss due to noise by the age of nineteen. Actually noise-induced (噪音诱发的) hearing loss (NIHL) is an epidemic in the US. Now nationwide there are about fifty million people suffering it. Each of us has approximately 18,000 tiny hair cells in our inner ears that transmit (传输) sound via the auditory nerve (听觉神经) to our brains. When exposed to dangerously loud sound, some of these hair cells become damaged and die. This is usually pain-free and often happens so gradually that we are not aware of our hearing loss. Then one day, we wake up and find that we have severely and permanently damaged our ability to hear. NIHL can lead to social isolation, increased stress and depression, reduced job performance and lower income, increased risk of injury, and even death. NIHL is frequently accompanied by tinnitus, a ringing sound that can stay with you for the rest of your life. And the economic impact is enormous, with lifetime costs estimated to be up to $1 million per person. Sadly, there is no cure for NIHL and no doctor can fix it. Hearing aids may help to raise the volume of sound, but they don’t come close to replacing normal hearing. While NIHL is both progressive and permanent, there is some good news — NIHL can be avoided. Several simple changes in our behavior can make a world of difference. Let’s turn down the volume on our headphones. Let’s walk away from areas with loud noise. And, if we cannot do either of these, let’s wear hearing protection when we are exposed to loud sound. For example, music students need to wear ear plugs during rehearsals (排练) and performances. Hearing is a precious gift: protect yours! 8. What does the author mean by saying “There are ‘Marias’ in every school in the US”? A. Many girls attend programs run by US schools. B. Maria is a commonly used name in the country. C Permanent hearing loss is common in US schools. D. Permanent hearing loss is hard to avoid in US schools. 9. What’s implied about hearing loss in Paragraph 2? A. People may have suffered it without knowing it. B. We can be in great pain before it takes place. C. It’s always caused by dangerously loud sound. D. It means losing all the inner ears’ tiny hair cells. 10. What is the good news mentioned by the author? A. Doctors have new discoveries about NIHL. B. NIHL is preventable if we pay attention. C. We can live a life without loud music. D. There is a cure for NIHL today. 11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To show the importance of wearing ear plugs. B. To tell about the causes of hearing loss. C. To encourage us to protect our hearing. D. To suggest we listen to less music. C 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第一段“Twenty percent of American kids will suffer permanent hearing loss due to noise by the age of nineteen. Actually noise-induced (噪音诱发的) hearing loss (NIHL) is an epidemic in the US. Now nationwide there are about fifty million people suffering it.(到19岁时,20%的美国儿童将因噪音而遭受永久性听力损失。 根据第二段“This is usually pain-free and often happens so gradually that we are not aware of our hearing loss.(这通常是无痛的,而且通常是逐渐发生的,以至于我们没有意识到我们的听力损失。)” 故选A。 根据倒数第二段“While NIHL is both progressive and permanent, there is some good news — NIHL can be avoided. Several simple changes in our behavior can make a world of difference.(虽然NIHL是渐进的和永久性的,但也有一些好消息——NIHL是可以避免的。 C。 Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, drought, typhoons and hurricanes are all natural disasters. The earthquake on December 26th, 2004 resulted is one of the worst natural disasters in living memory. It was a massive underwater quake and occurred in the Indian Ocean. This caused a huge tsunami to cross the Indian Ocean. It destroyed coastlines and communities and brought death and destruction to many people. The survivors needed fresh water, food and shelters as well as medical help. People from all over the world gave money so that towns and villages could be rebuilt. The surface of the earth is not always looked as it does today; it is moving continuously and has done so for billions of years. This is one cause of earthquakes, when one section of the earth collides with another. Scientists can predict where this might happen and the area between plates is called a fault line. However, earthquakes do not always happen on fault lines, which is why they are so dangerous and unpredictable. Volcanoes happen where the earth’s crust is thin — lava, dust and gases erupt from beneath the earth. They can rise into a massive cone shape — like a mountain and erupt, or they can be so violent that they just explode directly from the earth with no warning. Hurricanes are extremely strong storms and often happen in the Caribbean. They cause high winds, huge waves, and heavy flooding and can cross hundreds of miles. Floods happen in many countries after very heavy rainfall. When rain pours for weeks at a time and rivers overflow, people and property can be trapped or simply washed away. Another kind of natural disaster is drought. This happens when there is no water — when it doesn’t rain for a long time and rivers dry up. This causes crops to fail, animals to die and sadly, people to starve. All the disasters are very dangerous, but they are nowhere near the most dangerous. One type of events in the earth’s history has regularly killed millions of beings: the asteroid impact, which causes massive destruction and sometimes kills entire species, including all the dinosaurs. Disasters on the earth may seem dangerous, but the biggest threat to humans is likely to come from space. 12. What did people from all over the world do when the tsunami occurred in the Indian Ocean? A. They aided the search for the victims. B. They gave away money to the beggars. C. They offered sponsorship to help the survivors. D. They rebuilt the coastlines and communities. 13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. Why earthquakes happen. B. What earthquakes destroy. C. How we can prevent earthquakes. D. When earthquakes happen. 14. Where does the author think the most dangerous natural disaster will come from? A. Space. B. The tsunami. C. Drought. D. The hurricane. 15. What’s the best title of the passage? A. The History of Natural Disasters B. The Types of Natural Disasters C. The Outcome of Natural Disasters D. The Prediction of Natural Disasters 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. A 15. People from all over the world gave money so that towns and villages could be rebuilt.(幸存者需要淡水、食物、庇护所以及医疗帮助。 根据第三段“The surface of the earth is not always looked as it does today; it is moving continuously and has done so for billions of years. This is one cause of earthquakes, when one section of the earth collides with another. Scientists can predict where this might happen and the area between plates is called a fault line. However, earthquakes do not always happen on fault lines, which is why they are so dangerous and unpredictable.(地球表面并不总是像今天这样;它一直在移动,并且已经移动了几十亿年。 故选A。 根据最后一段“Disasters on the earth may seem dangerous, but the biggest threat to humans is likely to come from space.(地球上的灾难似乎很危险,但对人类最大的威胁可能来自太空)”可知,作者认为最危险的自然灾害将来自太空。故选A。 根据第一段“Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, drought, typhoons and hurricanes are all natural disasters.(自然灾害有许多不同的形式,可能毫无征兆地发生。 Picking a career is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make.____16____The most important factors in choosing a career have to do with who you are as an individual. I was really looking forward to having the house all to myself while my friends were over. Trying to get my mother to understand, I said, “Mom, can’t you find some place for Laura to go, like cousin Ellie’s? Having her here will ruin everything!” I had finally talked my parents into letting me invite a few school friends. I had been waiting for this birthday party for weeks. And now I had to deal with my older sister being around. “Now Emily,” my mother said to me, “Laura will stay out of your way and in her own room. Besides, I don’t understand why you’re so upset about her being here.” After a pause, my mother continued, “She’s older than your friends and probably doesn’t want anything to do with them anyway.” I replied, “She will hang out and talk about something that we dislike.” My mother finally responded, “You need to change your attitude to Laura or there won’t be a party!” I had to give up. Finally the time for the party came. All kids arrived. My dad was still abroad and my mother went out, working in a shop nearby. The air was filled with excitement and freedom. I only hoped Laura would stay in her room. The scavenger hunt (寻物游戏) I had planned went well. The girls all returned to the living room with their treasures. We were ready for the next planned activity — sharing the birthday cake that was on the table of the living room. Suddenly, my friend Meeka noticed movement behind the curtains by the window. As we stepped over to see what it was, a squirrel ran out from behind the curtain, heading straight toward Jane! Panicked, it jumped onto Jane’s body and its sharp claws scratched her hand. The screams were everywhere and I had no idea what to do. I stood still until Laura ran in to see what was happening. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I looked at Laura, wondering if she could help handle Jane’s wounds in her hand. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 I stood still until Laura ran in to see what was happening. The squirrel jumped quickly onto the table. And unluckily, the cake got ruined. The squirrel continued to run and jump wildly in the living room, attempting to find a way to get out of the room. But it was in vain. Suddenly, it headed toward Laura. At the very last second, Laura opened the front door and allowed it to run out. Thank goodness! I sighed with relief. But Jane was crying and soon I remembered she had got hurt by the squirrel. I looked at Laura, wondering if she could help handle Jane’s wounds in her hand. Laura immediately led Jane into the bathroom. She let Jane put her hand under the running tap water. After cleaning the cuts, Laura dried them with a clean towel. During the period, I called my mother. After a while, she came home and sent Jane to hospital. Thanks to Laura’s first aid, Jane recovered soon. From then on, I changed my attitude towards Laura. 词汇激活 行为类 ①想起:remember/recall ②尝试:attempt/try ③康复:recover/make a fully recovery 情绪类 ①徒劳:in vain/fruitlessly ②如释重负:sign with relief/feel a sense of relief 【点睛】【高分句型1】The squirrel continued to run and jump wildly in the living room, attempting to find a way to get out of the room. George Berzsenyi is a retired math professor living in Milwaukee County. Maria is a 10-year-old elementary school student who comes home with ringing in her ears — a sign of hearing loss — after attending a program in her school hall. C. Permanent hearing loss is common in US schools. C To encourage us to protect our hearing. D. To suggest we listen to less music. Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Laura’s going to be home?” I said. My sister was the last person I wanted around the night of my birthday party. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1.A 2.C 3.A 4.C 5.B 6.A 7.C 8.B 9.C 10.B 11.C 12.B 13.C 14.A 15.C 16.A 17.B 18.C 19.B 20.C
