Marketing tents as single-use(一次性的)should be stopped, festival organisers(组织者) say, as people continue to try to cut down on plastic at festivals.
Single-use festival tents should not be used, to help avoid almost 900 tons of plastic waste each year,
festival organisers have said.
A group of more than 60 festivals across the UK have pushed supermarkets such as Argos and Tesco to stop marketing and selling single-use tents. Festival-goers are also encouraged to take their tents home at the end of the festival.
About 250,000 tents are left at music festivals across the UK each year. Many are not collected and end up as waste.
The action to stop the tents ending up as waste starts with the Association of Independent Festivals(AIF). AIF’s 10-year report found 10% of people attending its festivals had left a tent behind during that year’s festival season. This works out as about 875 tons of plastic waste, which is the weight of 240 elephants.
In 2018, the first year of a promise to cut down on plastic, festivals reported some important changes: 40% of those who had signed the promise stopped the sale of drinks in single-use plastic cups, 67% sold reusable drinks bottles, and 87% encouraged the use of reusable bottles.
AIF CEO Paul Reed said, “The message here is not to buy a more expensive tent. Festival-goers can take their tent home and reuse it, making sure that it doesn’t become a single-use tent this summer.”
( )19.Why do festival organisers suggest stopping single-use tents?
A. They are too heavy. B. They are too expensive.
C. They end up as waste. D. They need much special plastic.
( )20.What are festival-goers asked to do?
A. Reuse their tents. B. Stop using tents.
C. Attend fewer festivals. D. Use tents just in summer.
( )21.What is the AIF trying to do?
A. Protect elephants. B. Cut down on plastic waste.
C. Provide better tents. D. Get more people to attend festivals.
( )22.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To introduce music festivals across the UK. B. To show the importance of the festival tents
C. To ask people to stop selling plastic things. D. To encourage people to say no to single-use tents.

①It can be really embarrassing if someone sees you talking to yourself. But don’t feel bad about it! Talking to yourself actually has a lot of advantages.
②You probably know that thinking is good for the brain. It helps us do things like making plans and managing our feelings. Talking to yourself loud is like showing this quiet inner(内在的) speech. It can help us do better in different areas like studies, sports and work.
③Talking to yourself, especially in the third person, can help us manage bad feelings. “Talking to yourself in the third person is like giving yourself advice.” said Jason Moser, a professor( 教 授 ) from Michigan State University in the US. Jason uses himself as an example. He does not like flying, but he often has to fly for his work. So when he is feeling nervous or afraid during a flight, he talks to himself – only silently. Well, you know, Jason knows air travel is very safe. And Jason has been on thousands of flights. This can help us to see things from a different aspect(角度), especially when we’re feeling sad or angry.
④When encouragement comes from oneself, it adds to self-confidence. A study invited 72 tennis players to take part in some matches. Researchers divided the players into two groups: one group that said nothing while playing, and the other that talked to themselves while playing. They found that the self-talkers showed more confidence and played better than those in the silent group.
⑤Self-talk also helps to improve memory. Researchers tested four different ways to memorize things: read silently, reading aloud, listening to someone else read and listening to a recording of oneself reading. “Those who read out loud record the information best,” Researchers said in their study. It’s because the information will probably become a long-term memory if it is said out loud.
( )23. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 2?
A. Managing our feelings B. The brain C. Thinking D. Talking to yourself
( )24. How does the writer show his opinion in Paragraph 3?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving an example.
C. By comparing himself with others. D. By telling stories.
( )25. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. Talking to yourself helps to find out the best players.
B. Talking to yourself helps to improve players’ talking skills.
C. Talking to yourself helps to make you more confident.
D. Talking to yourself helps to make you more relaxed.
( )26. Which of the following best shows the structure(结构) of the passage?
(
D.
)A. B. C.

Plunk! I dropped another pecan(山核桃) into my basket. Then a gentle autumn wind blew some more off the tree. I ran to pick them up. Whew! Pecan picking was hard. My basket was only half full.
I was visiting my grandpa’s farm in Kansas, and Grandpa sent me into the woods to pick up pecans for us to enjoy later. I wasn’t about to let him down.
Then something caught my eye: a squirrel picked up a pecan, climbed up a tree and disappeared into a large hole. A moment later, the squirrel climbed down to the ground to pick up another pecan. Once again, the squirrel took the pecan back to his secret hiding place inside the hollow(洞) of the tree.
Not so secret any more, I thought. I ran over to the tree and found the hollow was filled with sweet pecans. They were right there for the taking. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I took all the pecans from the hollow. Now the basket was full!
I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all of the pecans I’d collected.
“Look, Grandpa,” I shouted, “look at all of the pecans I found!” Grandpa took a look at my basket. “Well, well, how did you find so many, Jimmy?” 1 told him how I’d followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place. Grandpa congratulated me on finding out something about the squirrel’s secrets. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.
“That squirrel worked very hard to collect his winter food,” he said, “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don’t you think that little squirrel will be very hungry when it gets cold?”
“I didn’t think about that.” I said.
“I know,” Grandpa said, “But a good man should never take advantage of someone else’s hard work, even the squirrel’s.”
Suddenly I felt as hollow as that old tree. The image(形象) of that hungry squirrel wouldn’t leave my mind.
There was only one thing I could do.
( )27. The writer was proud of himself because .
A. he was praised by his grandpa
B. he found out his grandpa’s secret
C. he helped the squirrel in the hollow
D. he filled his basket with so many pecans
( )28. Which of the following can best describe Grandpa?
A. Kind and wise. C. Shy and friendly.
B. Caring and humorous. D. Patient and hard-working.
( )29. What is the possible ending to the story?
A. The writer sent the pecans to his neighbors.
B. The writer put all the pecans back into the hole.
C. The writer hid the pecans in his grandpa’s house.
D. The writer enjoyed all the pecans with his family.
( )30.What is the best title for the text?
A. An unusual tree B. The stolen pecans C. A smart squirrel D. The magic basket

Life is full of surprises that sometimes change one’s everyday life. They may influence your mind, feelings, and behaviour. 31 .
Some of the surprises might be good and some of them might not be so enjoyable. However, you need to
understand that unexpected events (出人意料的事件) are part of life. When you accept this fact, you will deal with them more easily. 32 . Sometimes, you think an event may cause problems, but in the end, it might make a good result. For example, even getting out of work could get a good result. That means you might find a better job.
Before getting angry or afraid, give the situation a careful thought. 33 . So, instead of feeling bad, you’d better think about ways to get used to the new situation. If you can’t, you’d better do something to make an improvement on it. This is more useful.
34 . In other words, don’t waste time to think about the past. Just go ahead to make the most of the present moment.
(

Bobi was a dog from Portugal(葡萄牙).When he and his three brothers were born in the family’s woodshed(柴房),Costa’s father decided to 56 (扔) the four little baby dogs away since they already had too many animals at home. Costa, the 8-year-old boy, was really sad. However, a few days later, he surprisingly found Bobi 57 (活着). Costa jumped up and down with joy when he had Bobi back.
Bobi had some simple living 58 ( 习 惯 ). He got up with Costa in the morning and went to bed with Costa at night. He had meals with Costa every day and ate what Costa had for meals. What's more, he always had a nap(打瞌睡) after meal. It was a must.
Bobi lived in a calm, peaceful and very “sociable” environment. After naps, Bobi always walked around 59 (自由地)in the forests and farmland nearby without a chain(链条). What's more, he usually had four cat friends to hang around with!
However, as Bobi grew older, he wasn’t full of 60 ( 精 力 ) any more. He had d 61 in walking and sometimes hit things as he couldn’t see clearly. But doctors said he was doing well for such an old age.
C 62 with other dogs, Bobi lived a longer life, more than 63 (两倍) as long as normal dogs do. He celebrated his 31st birthday on May 11, 2023 and passed away on October21st. That made him the world’s oldest dog in history, a 64 to Guinness World Records(吉尼斯世界纪录). People often ask Costa how Bobi could live such a long life. Hi, I'm Tom. I'm going to talk about my family rules. The main rule I have to follow, I think,
is to study hard at school. My parents want me to do my homework carefully and tell them about
anything important that happened at school. I must go home after school at once. I have to go to bed
by 10 p.m. on school nights. But during the holidays, I can stay up longer at night. Another rule is
that I have to clean my room. My parents will get angry if I leave things around the house. I should
keep my room tidy although I often break this rule. I think many children at my age like to have our
rooms as "our places". I try to keep it the way I like a bit untidy. I can have posters on the wall. But
I don't think my parents would like it if I had photos of girls up.
