At the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, Chinese breakdancer (霹雳舞者) Liu Qingyi won gold in the women’s breakdancing event, giving her the chance to enter the Paris 2024 Olympics. At just 18 years old, she became a new star in the world of breakdancing.
“It was not easy to get the gold medal. I competed in many overseas countries this year, which was a challenge for me. Getting an Olympic ticket made me more confident,” Liu told Xinhua.
Born in 2005 in Henan province, Liu started learning breakdancing at age 10. She had tried many other hobbies before starting breakdancing, such as playing the guitar, boxing and taekwondo. “There are no strict rules in breakdancing, and it feels free,” Liu told China Sports Daily.
Such “freedom”, however, comes at a cost, involving hard training. In order to master a360-degree rotation (旋转) on the floor, Liu had to practice for several months. But it seems that nothing can stop Liu. Fueled by her own passion, this young breakdancer is only growing stronger and more courageous (勇敢的) as she continues her exciting journey.
At Outbreak Europe 2022 in Slovakia, Liu became the first Chinese breakdancer to win the world’s top breakdancing competition. Less than a month later, the teenager won the World Battle 2022 breakdancing contest after competing with breakdancers from over 50 countries and regions.
Known for her energetic and powerful style, Liu is always trying to innovate (创新) in her performances. “I am constantly exploring how to integrate elements of Chinese culture, such as martial arts, Peking Opera, folk dances, and more into breakdancing to create my own style,” Liu told Hunan Daily. “In this way, we can better introduce Chinese culture to the audience at the same time,” she explained to China Daily.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Liu got the third place and won honor for her country, showing the talent of Chinese breakdancers to the world.
24. What qualified Liu Qingyi for the Paris 2024 Olympics?

D. By improving and strengthening her dancing skills.
27. Which of the following can best describe Liu Qingyi?

Climate change is speeding up the frequency and seriousness of extreme(极端的) weather events in places like the Horn of Africa, where deadly floods and the worst drought hit in decades. Besides, traditional weather forecast(预报) models in sub- Saharan Africa often aren’t dependable enough to forecast extreme weather events accurately(准确地) ahead of time, leaving the areas at risk. Based on the facts, accurate and timely forecasts are important to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
Climate scientists are building artificial intelligence (AI) into the traditional weather forecasting method in East Africa to improve the accuracy of extreme weather forecasts. By using both physical atmospheric processes in traditional forecasting and AI, researchers develop a first- of- its- kind new modeling approach to give more accurate rainfall forecasts.“ We start from the traditional forecasts and add the AI model over it to make up for what the traditional forecasts have missed, so that the final forecast results can more accurately match the data that has actually been observed,” explains Shruti Nath, a climate scientist and researcher at the University of Oxford Department of Physics.
According to Shruti Nath, this model, which only requires a notebook computer to run, without the need for expensive supercomputers, gives local meteorological (气象的) organizations an affordable way of making more accurate forecasts in an area where there is a shortage of accurate observational data. The researchers say the project could change early warning systems in East Africa, making the area get better prepared for the extreme weather caused by climate change.
Traditionally, many forecasting organizations in Africa did not have good computational resources. The project is supported by an IT company, which provides funding and computational resources. This approach gives them the ability to use AI to make forecasting at the least computational expense.
The model is currently being rolled out in Kenya and Ethiopia. If successful in East Africa, researchers hope to use it in other parts of the world facing similar challenges. More countries are trying to spread the technology as well as build local ownership and trust.
28. What does the author want to stress in the first paragraph?
A. The necessity of using the new weather forecast model.
B. The great climate changes caused by human activities.
C. The seriousness of the flood and drought in Africa.
D. Little progress has been made in weather forecasts.
29. How does the new weather forecast model work?
A. It needs much less observational data.
B. It uses supercomputers to process data.
C. It combines AI with the traditional method.
D It depends on AI instead of the former way.
30. What can we say about the new weather forecast model?
A. It runs easily. B. It is low- cost.
C. It doesn’t work as wished. D. It is geographically limited.
31. What can be the most suitable title for the text?
A. Climate Change and Its Effects on Africa
B. Uncertainty of Weather Forecast with AI
C. AI Helping Improve Weather Forecast in Sub- Saharan Africa
D. The Challenges Faced by Traditional Weather Forecast Model

Communication is more than just words: it includes verbal and nonverbal signals (言语和非言语信号) that express meaning and emotions (情感). However, some public-speaking coaches try to downplay the importance of language. They may mention the research reported in1967 by Professor Albert Mehrabian and say that only 7 percent of the effectiveness of communication is down to language, while 38 percent depends on the tone of voice (语调) and 55 percent comes from body language. This has led coaches to focus mainly on developing a speaking style of confidence, grace, etc., and not worry so much about the words.
Unluckily, this is a complete misunderstanding of what Mehrabian found. His experiments were mainly about discovering how emotion was communicated. So for example, he would test what would happen if someone said “That’s nice,” but said so in an angry tone of voice, or with frightening body language. Sure enough, in those situations, words don’t count for much. But it is unreasonable to use this for all speech. And Mehrabian is so sick of his findings being misused in this way that his website has a specially marked paragraph asking people not to do this.
Yes, communicating emotion is important, and for that, one’s tone of voice and body language do matter a great deal. But the whole content of a talk depends greatly on words. It’s words that tell a story, build an idea, explain a difficult problem, make a good reason, or provide a powerful call to action. So, if you hear someone tell you that body language matters more than verbal language in public speaking, please know that they are misunderstanding the science. Or for fun, you could just ask them to repeat their point only with gestures (手势)!
The fact that we can spread ideas with language is why human-to-human speaking matters. It is how our worldviews are built and shaped. Our ideas make us who we are. And speakers who have worked out how to spread their ideas into others’ minds are able to create ripple effects (连锁反应) of untold results.
32. What does the underlined word “downplay” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Undervalue. B. Discuss. C. Stress. D. Misunderstand.
33. What message does Mehrabian give in the paragraph shown on his website?
A. Do not misuse his name. B. Do not misuse body language.
C. Do not misuse his research findings. D. Do not misuse the tone of voice.
34. Why does the author jokingly advise us to ask someone to repeat their point only with gestures?
A. To make fun of them. B. To prove them wrong.
C. To support their view. D. To teach them a skill.
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To offer advice to public speakers.
B. To show some means of communicating emotion.
C. To introduce ways to communicate effectively.
D. To point out the importance of words.

How exciting! Today is my basketball grand final! My team of six enthusiastic boys led by our coach, Jack, has worked extremely hard just to make the finals. As I hurried to our team bench, our opponents caught my attention. They seemed a lot taller and “meaner” looking.
Whistle blew. Five of us started on the court. Our opponent got hold of the ball first. They were unbelievably fast. They kept breaking our defence and kept scoring goals. Even our best Bryce, could not stop our opponents from scoring, which annoyed him a lot. By half time, both teams were extremely exhausted and our opponents were ten goals ahead, which presented us with an enormous challenge.
Jack was awfully anxious. He told us that we could still win if we made our transitions much quicker so that penalty shots came our way. He also directed us to rebound (抢断篮板) and position ourselves better to receive and score goals. Most importantly, he reminded us to play as a team.
Our team was all fired up. The second half started in our favor. We were as quick as lightning on the court. We were dribbling (运球), passing, shooting and rebounding without any mistakes. The scores were almost level. We were trailing (比分落后) only by one point. However, our opponents switched back to attention and started playing like what they did in the first half, making it harder for us to score.
One minute left! Our opponent threw in the ball but I managed to steal it! Our team was bursting with happiness! More opponents were heading my way and I had to pass the ball to Bryce. Instead of passing on the ball, he did the most unexpected thing. He tried to score from half court! He missed by miles!

D. It depends on AI instead of the former way.
30. What can we say about the new weather forecast model?
A. It runs easily. B. It is low- cost.
C. It doesn’t work as wished. D. It is geographically limited.
31. What can be the most suitable title for the text?
A. Climate Change and Its Effects on Africa
B. Uncertainty of Weather Forecast with AI

B To show some means of communicating emotion.
C. To introduce ways to communicate effectively.
D. To point out the importance of words.
A 33. C 34. B 35. D

根据文章第一段划线词后“They may mention the research reported in1967 by Professor Albert Mehrabian and say that only 7 percent of the effectiveness of communication is down to language, while 38 percent depends on the tone of voice and 55 percent comes from body language.(他们可能会提到1967年Albert Mehrabian教授的研究报告,并说,在交流中,只有7%的有效性来自于语言,而38%取决于语调,55%来自于肢体语言)”可知,一些演讲教练会认为在交流中,只有7%的有效性来自于语言,而38%取决于语调,55%来自于肢体语言,这说明他们认为语言在交流中不重要,即低估了语言的重要性。 故选A。
根据文章第二段“And Mehrabian is so sick of his findings being misused in this way that his website has a specially marked paragraph asking people not to do this.(Mehrabian非常厌恶他的研究成果被这样滥用,以至于他的网站上有一个特别标注的段落,要求人们不要这样做)”可知,Mehrabian在他的网站上给出的信息是不要滥用他的研究成果。
根据文章第三段“So, if you hear someone tell you that body language matters more than verbal language in public speaking, please know that they are misunderstanding the science. Or for fun, you could just ask them to repeat their point only with gestures!(所以,如果你听到有人在演讲中告诉你,肢体语言比言语更重要,那么你要知道他们误解了科学。或者为了好玩,你可以让他们只用手势来重复他们的观点!)”可知,作者开玩笑地建议我们要求别人只用手势来重复他们的观点是为了证明他们错了。故选B。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文及文章第三段“But the whole content of a talk depends greatly on words.(但谈话的全部内容在很大程度上取决于言语)”及“So, if you hear someone tell you that body language matters more than verbal language in public speaking, please know that they are misunderstanding the science. Or for fun, you could just ask them to repeat their point only with gestures!(所以,如果你听到有人在演讲中告诉你,肢体语言比言语更重要,那么你要知道他们误解了科学。或者为了好玩,你可以让他们只用手势来重复他们的观点!)”可知,文章主要讲述了语言在交流中的重要性,并反驳了一些演讲教练对语言的轻视观点。因此,文章的目的是指出语言的重要性。故选D。

Even our best, Bryce, could not stop our opponents from scoring, which annoyed him a lot.

根据第一段的“Today is my basketball grand final! My team of six enthusiastic boys led by our coach, Jack, has worked extremely hard just to make the finals. As I hurried to our team bench, our opponents caught my attention.(今天是我的篮球总决赛!在我们的教练杰克的带领下,我的六个充满热情的男孩组成的团队为了进入决赛付出了极大的努力。当我匆匆走向我们队的替补席时,我们的对手引起了我的注意)”可知,今天是作者所在的篮球队和对手总决赛的日子。所以参加者是作者的篮球队和对手的篮球的。表示“对手”应用名词opponent,此处用复数形式。故填opponents。
②考查动词短语。根据第一段的“My team of six enthusiastic boys led by our coach, Jack, has worked extremely hard just to make the finals.(在我们的教练杰克的带领下,我的六个充满热情的男孩组成的团队为了进入决赛付出了极大的努力)”可知,通过努力,作者的篮球队在教练的带领下进入了总决赛。 故填made the finals。
根据第二段的“By half time, both teams were extremely exhausted and our opponents were ten goals ahead, which presented us with an enormous challenge.(到中场休息时,两队都筋疲力尽,我们的对手领先10球,这给我们带来了巨大的挑战)”可知,上半场结束时,作者的团队落后对手10分,这让他们带来的巨大的挑战。 故填ten goals behind, which presented us with an enormous challenge。
根据第四段“The second half started in our favor.(下半场开始对我们有利)”可知,下半场对作者的篮球队开始有利。 故填started in favor。
根据最后一段的“He tried to score from half court! He missed by miles!(他试图从半场外投篮得分!结果差了很远,没能投进!)”可知,作者把球传个Bryce,结果他试图半场外投篮得分,但是却差了很远,没能投进。故填scored from half court but missed by miles。
They complained about it./They comforted Bryce and said it didn’t matter.
根据最后一段“Instead of passing on the ball, he did the most unexpected thing. He tried to score from half court! He missed by miles!(他没有传球,而是做了最意想不到的事情。他试图从半场外投篮得分!结果差了很远,没能投进!)”可知,Bryce没有传球,所以导致比赛失去了一次机会,由此可推知,教练可能会强调合作的重要性。故答案为Cooperation/Teamwork/Playing as a team is the most important.
根据第三段的“He also directed us to rebound (抢断篮板) and position ourselves better to receive and score goals. Most importantly, he reminded us to play as a team.(他还指示我们抢篮板,更好地定位自己,以便进球。最重要的是,他提醒我们要团队合作)”以及第四段的“Our team was all fired up. The second half started in our favor.(我们队士气大振。下半场开始时形势对我们有利)”可知,经过教练Jack的鼓励和指导,作者和整个篮球队士气大振。由此可推知,Jack的话让作者他们感到信心大增。故答案为Jack’s words made us feel confident.
Instead of passing on the ball, he did the most unexpected thing. He tried to score from half court!
