When Jack was in his teens, he and his friends suddenly became crazy about throwing stones. They received a lot of scolding from their neighbours because they made them restless. However, they still went their own way.
One day, they were hitting a little bird when one of the stones rebounded(反弹), almost hitting an old man.
“Oh boys, boys, don't throw stones at that poor bird. I am afraid the stone will rebound, and hurt you as long as you live!”
“Rebound! I don't understand you!” said Jack.
“Well, come and I will tell you a true story. ”Here is the story that the old man told them.
My dear boys, fifty years ago, I was a boy like you. I used to throw stones until I became very accurate. One day I went to work for an aged couple. They were very kind to everybody and everything. Few had so many swallows(燕子)making their nests under the roofs of their houses. The birds seemed to love the couple. For seven years a bird had come, after the long winter was over, and built her nest in the same place, and raised her young ones there. She and her mate had just returned when I went there to work, and the couple welcomed them heartily. The bird jumped about, as if glad to be back. During the day, I thought I would try my skill upon her. She sat upon a post near the spot where she was to build her nest, and looked at me trustfully, as much as to say, “You won't hurt me? ”I found a nice stone, and I threw it with my greatest skill. It struck the bird on the head and she dropped dead! I was sorry the moment I saw her fall. But the deed was done. I said nothing to the old couple about it. But one of their grandchildren told them what I had done. Though the couple never said a word to me, I knew that they were deeply saddened by my cruelty. I could never look at them in the face afterwards.

1. 伏笔:“When Jack was in his teens, he and his friends suddenly became crazy about throwing stones. They received a lot of scolding from their neighbours because they made them restless.”(杰克十几岁的时候,他和他的朋友们突然热衷于扔石头。
2. 伏笔:“One day, they were hitting a little bird when one of the stones rebounded, almost hitting an old man.”(有一天,他们在打一只小鸟时,一块石头反弹回来,差点砸到一位老人。)
3. 伏笔:“For seven years a bird had come, after the long winter was over, and built her nest in the same place, and raised her young ones there.”(七年来,每当漫长的冬天过去,一只鸟就会飞来,在同一个地方筑巢,并在那里养育幼鸟。)
4. 伏笔:“The bird sat upon a post near the spot where she was to build her nest, and looked at me trustfully, as much as to say, ‘You won't hurt me?’”(那只鸟坐在它要筑巢的地方附近的一根柱子上,信任地看着我,好像在说:“你不会伤害我吧?”)
5. 伏笔:“I could never look at them in the face afterwards.”(从那以后,我再也不敢正视他们的脸。)

Oh, I should have told them how sorry I was! I knew that they would forgive me, for they were very kind, but I couldn't forgive myself. I was so ashamed that I left them as soon as I could and never went back. For many years, I have been haunted by this guilt. I often see the sad faces of the old couple and the lifeless body of the bird in my dreams. Each time I think about it, my heart aches. I realized that every action has consequences, and once a cruel thing is done, it can never be undone. I hope you boys understand this and never make the same mistake I did. You have the chance to change now, before it's too late.
After listening to this story, Jack and his friends fell silent. They looked at each other, and for the first time, they saw the error of their ways. The image of the dead bird and the old man's remorseful face were etched into their minds. Jack thought about all the times they had thrown stones without a second thought, not realizing the potential harm they could cause. They decided then and there that they would never throw stones again. When they got home, Jack told his parents what had happened and apologized for his past behavior. The next day, he and his friends went around to their neighbors and did the same. They also started a small campaign in their neighborhood to promote kindness and respect for all living things. From that day on, they carried the lesson of the old man's story with them, always remembering that their actions had the power to hurt or heal.
Oh, I should have told them how sorry I was! But my pride and fear held me back. I watched as the years passed, and the couple grew older, still showing kindness to everyone but me. I knew they knew what I had done, and that knowledge was like a thorn in my side. I lost the chance to be truly close to them, all because of that one thoughtless act. I see now that kindness is not just about what we do, but also about what we don't do. We should never harm those who trust us, whether they are people or animals. Boys, learn from my mistake and cherish the trust of others.
After listening to this story, Jack and his friends fell silent. Their hearts were heavy with guilt and realization. They understood that their actions had been irresponsible and cruel. As they walked home, the usual laughter and chatter were absent. Instead, they were deep in thought, reflecting on the old man's words. Jack remembered a time when he had almost hit a cat with a stone and how he had laughed it off. Now, he felt ashamed. When they reached their homes, they each made a promise to themselves to make amends. They started by cleaning up the areas where they had thrown stones, picking up the debris and making it safe for others. They also reached out to the neighbors they had disturbed, offering to do small chores or errands to show their remorse. And most importantly, they made a pact to always think before they acted, to choose kindness over thoughtlessness. The old man's story had changed them, and they were determined to become better, to let the lesson of kindness and responsibility guide their future actions.
Oh, I should have told them how sorry I was! They have been dead many years, and so has the poor bird; but don't you see how that stone rebounded, and hit me? How much the memory of it has hurt me! I would pay a great deal today if I could release from my present feeling! For fifty years I have remembered it. I have never spoken of it before; but if what my words will prevent you from throwing a stone that may rebound, I will be happy.
After listening to this story, Jack and his friends fell silent. Obviously, they were deeply moved by this true story. Jack and his little friend apologized to the old man. They continued to talk for a long time. They seemed to have matured and grown up all of a sudden. Later, Jack and his friends occasionally played by throwing stones, but they were very careful not to harm the cute little animals around them, and they also stayed away from the community, no longer disturbing the lives of their neighbours. They put more energy into helping the elderly around them and received their praise.
