Sweat ran its way down my cheeks. It was hot, and the air was still and wet. One final play and the State Softball Championship was ours. I looked towards people who were watching the game. Sure enough, I found my mom. I always hoped my dad were here. The farm needed his full attention, but I did not care.
Finally we won! State Champs! I let out a stream of happiness, full of tears. My mom made a “V” to celebrate my success and smiled. I smiled back at her. We all received medals, but I cannot remember any of it. I concentrated my thoughts on my dad. I ran to my mom, asking for her cellphone. I had to tell my dad about the happiest day of my life, and complained (抱怨) about why he did not care.
The phone rang twice, and no one answered. My heart sank, but I tried again anyway. “Hello?” answered my dad. “Dad!” I cried. “We won State!” There was silence. “Dad?” I could hear something on the other end. “Are you crying?” “I’m just really happy for you, Meggie,” he said. “And I’m sorry I couldn’t be there.”
An apology was all I needed. I hung up the phone, feeling relaxed, and I began to understand how it must feel to be a father. I forgave him for never being there. He worked so I could play. My father loved me enough to let me experience life’s happiest moments without him.

In Korea, few of the older people can speak some English, and most of them can’t say a word. They will often smile and laugh while trying to help English-speaking foreigners. A lot of young Koreans will take the chance to help you in order just to practice their English skills-a win-win situation. Everyone in Korea takes English classes these days starting from elementary (初级的) school normally. Many also join in after-school programs for studies.
I was in my friend’s city which was about 4 hours’ driving from mine. In my city, we had the timetable in English as well as Korean, but that wasn’t the case here. I could not read Korean at that time, so I could not find when my bus was planned to leave, and did not know how to ask. The World Happiness Report, a United Nations agency report, tells how happy people are, and why. Norway is the happiest place on Earth — beating neighbour Denmark from the number one position.
Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland and Finland round out the top five, while the Central African Republic came last. Western Europe and North America took up most of the places at the top of table, with the US and UK at 14th and 19th.
The World Happiness Report mainly depends on asking a simple question of more than 1000 people every year in more than 150 countries. “Imagine a ladder (梯子), with steps numbered from 0 at the bottom to 10 at the top,” the question asks, “The top of the ladder is the best possible life for you and the bottom of the ladder is the worst possible life for you. On which step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time?”
The average result is the country’s score — from Norway’s 7.54 to the Central African Republic’s 2.69. But the report also tries to explain why one country is happier than another. It looks at reasons including economic strength, social support, freedom of choice, and generosity (慷慨).
This year’s report also has a text titled “restoring (恢复) American happiness”, which examines why happiness levels in the United States are falling, despite continually-increasing economic improvement. “The United States can and should raise happiness by solving America’s social problems — rising inequality and distrust — rather than focusing mainly on economic growth,” the authors said.
12. Which of the following is the correct order of the countries in terms of happiness levels?
A. Denmark, the UK, the US, the Central African Republic.
B. Denmark, the US, the UK, the Central African Republic.
C. The US, Denmark, the UK, the Central African Republic.
D. Denmark, the US, the Central African Republic, the UK.
13. How does the World Happiness Report measure happiness?
A. By asking a question. B. By having a conversation.
C. By doing scientific research. D. By carrying out an online survey.
14. What can we learn about America from the text?
A. Its people live an unhappy life. B. Its economy is going downhill.
C. Its social problems are hard to solve. D. It has a lower happiness level than before.
15. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To explain the reason for being happy. B. To talk about America’s social problems.

Aunt Evie had a dollhouse. It had many toys there. Every Friday afternoon, I went to Aunt Evie’s home with my parents. The adults would sit around a table in the dining room, eating pie and talking, while I played in the dollhouse for hours.
Sometimes I would pick up these lovely toys and place them in different positions. It was really fun. One time I asked Aunt Evie where she got the toys so that I could buy some, too. To my disappointment, Aunt Evie said that most of them were specially handmade gifts from her friends and couldn’t be bought anywhere. One such toy was a little bear, which was my favorite. It was so beautiful that I wanted to own it badly. “If I take it, Aunt Evie may not notice it. ” I said to myself.
Therefore, on a Friday afternoon, I attempted to take the little bear away from Aunt Evie’s dollhouse. I had to wait until nobody was watching me, ‘and it took me hours to get the courage to put the little bear in my pocket. Once I got the little bear, I couldn’t wait to go home. I had to hide it somewhere at home, so that no one would know I took it. That night after I went home with my parents, I couldn’t go to sleep. “What a bad person I am! I stole something from my loved Aunt Evie.” I thought. When I woke up the next morning, I felt awful, but I couldn’t tell my parents, let alone return the little bear to Aunt Evie. I was embarrassed about my behavior. At some point, I started to hate the little bear and myself. And I knew if I didn’t do something, I wouldn’t get away from those bad feelings.

Seized with fright, I stood frozen to the spot, thinking Aunt Evie would hate me. Eventually, with my mom’s encouragement, I got up the courage to head for Aunt Evie’s home.
Paragraph 2:
My hand was shaking when I rang the doorbell of Aunt Evie’s house. She unlocked the door, smiled and looked as if she already knew everything. I presented her with the little bear and made my apologies. “I admire your courage to return the bear. I would like to give it to you as a gift for your honesty. Sure enough, I found my mom. I always hoped my dad were here. The farm needed his full attention, but I did not care.
Finally, we won!

The World Happiness Report mainly depends on asking a simple question of more than 1,000 people every year in more than 150 countries.
B. Denmark the US, the UK, the Central African Republic.
C. To introduce the World Happiness Report. D. To discuss the policies by the American government.
