Antarctic wildlife may die out because of climate change
Do you like the emperor penguins (帝企鹅) in Antarctica (南极洲)? Sadly, these cute animals may nearly die out by the year 2100 because of warming temperatures, according to a recent study published in Nature. Emperor penguins spend part of the year living on sea ice connected (连) to land. They lay eggs and raise babies on the ice. But with warming temperatures, the sea ice may break earlier than normal. The babies may drown (溺亡) in the water, reported CNN.

① The seahorse is a small fish with a curly tail. Its size is from as small as a peanut (花生) to as large as a tennis shoe. Seahorses come in many colors, and some even have the ability to change colors to match the environment where they make their homes.
② ________ They are the slowest swimmers among fish. Their only way to push themselves forward is by using a tiny fin (鳍) on their back. Often, seahorses hold onto plants with their tails for a faster trip!
③ The seahorses’ biggest danger comes from humans. Seahorses feed on tiny fish and plankton (浮游生物), but chemical (化学品) pollution from human activities makes their food less and less. The climate has changed and ocean temperatures are higher than before because of human activities, which put stress on seahorses’ bodies by influencing their breathing and appetite (食欲). What’s more, because seahorses are poor swimmers, they have trouble running away to a safe area when they can’t live in their usual living place.
④ However, these bad things are far less terrible than the seahorse trade. Over 20 million seahorses are caught and killed each year for use in traditional Chinese medicine. On top of this, thousands of wild seahorses are sold to private aquarium (水族馆) owners every year.
⑤ As it continues, seahorses could disappear by around 2050, but there is still time to save them. Protecting seahorses means never buying them for home aquariums or taking medicine made with them. The whole world needs to protect oceans by cutting down on sea pollution.
26. Which of the following sentences is TRUE about seahorses?
A. They have many colors.
B. They are good swimmers.

28. What is the most terrible thing to the seahorses according to the passage?
A. Chemical pollution.
B. Climate change.
C. Seahorses’ breathing and appetite.
D. Seahorse trade.
29. What can we do to save seahorses?
A. We can take them home.
B. We can avoid buying products made from seahorses.
C. We can take medicine made with seahorses.
D. We can keep seahorses in the public aquariums.

四、任务型阅读(每小题2 分, 共10 分)
China is such a big country. Are the north and the south very different?
The biggest difference is that each place in China has its dialect (方言). Luckily, China has done a good job in teaching people Putonghua. It is reported that the number of Putonghua speakers has increased (增长) from 70 percent to 80.72 percent in the past ten years. How amazing it is that so many people can speak one language!
Besides, I think the food is quite different. I grew up in Tianjin, which is famous for baozi and jianbing. In 2012, my parents took me to travel in Hunan. I was surprised by the rice there. It was not as sweet and glutinous (黏的) as that in the north. This is because of the difference in rain and heat conditions.
You can find some differences in traditional Chinese poems. China’s poet Su Shi once wrote about the West Lake here: “The brimming waves delight the eye on sunny days; The dimming hills present a rare view in rainy haze. (水光潋滟晴方好, 山色空蒙雨亦奇。)” Hangzhou is warm and wet, with beautiful lake scenery. But if you read poems about the north, you’ll find “In boundless desert lonely smoke rises straight (大漠孤烟直)”. Those are quite different scenes, aren’t they?

But some people don’t care about it. They waste a lot of water in their daily life. Even worse, they pour dirty water into rivers. Many rivers and lakes are seriously polluted. Something must be done to stop the pollution. Only in this way can we live happily. If we don’t save water, the last drop of water will be a teardrop of ours.
