Auntie Ngeam is one of a third generation of indigo craftswomen (靛蓝工匠) in a family from the Phuan, a people known for their handmade textiles (纺织品). A large Phuan community settled in Phrae in northern Thailand in the late 19th century and brought their indigo craftsmanship with them.
Auntie Ngeam took over a small business from her parents more than 30 years ago and has played a key role in updating Thailand’s indigo clothing over the past decade. “Every shop on the street had plain blue shirts, so I started thinking about how I could stand out,” she says. “I tried using indigo to tie-dye (扎染) modern clothes.” Now in Thai markets across the country, the indigo tie-dyed clothes have become a phenomenon.
Auntie Ngeam also works together with the local government to promote the local indigo industry via tie-dye workshops among tourists. For the past six years, the town has hosted the Phrae Craft festival, showing small, independent indigo craftsmen’s work. The festival is run by Nanthanit Boyd, a former student of Auntie Ngeam’s. Today, Boyd is pushing the boundaries of indigo textile fashion, bringing designs to the world stage.
With the increasing acceptance of indigo craftsmanship among young people, intergenerational indigo businesses have become ubiquitous in Phrae. Banmatjai Indigo Workshop is one of such growing businesses, which was opened by the women of the Suchanok family 10 years ago, when the eldest daughter Chidchanok Suchanok returned home after graduation. “I wondered why my generation wasn’t appreciating indigo,” Chidchanok says. “It’s our heritage and a local resource.”
Phrae has been reborn as a craft center, bringing more jobs to the locals and attracting both domestic and international travelers. “The creativity is already here; all we need to do is make it shine brighter so people can see it,” says Boyd.
4. What can we learn about Auntie Ngeam?
A. She enjoys touring all over the country. B. She is the founder of her family business.
C. She pioneers the indigo tie-dyed clothes. D. She is in charge of the Phrae Craft festival.
5. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Private. B. Widespread. C. Challenging. D. Conservative.
6. What can be inferred about the indigo industry from Boyd’s words?
A. It unites the local communities. B. It guarantees the locals a richer life.
C. It deserves to be further promoted. D. It appeals to the younger generation.
7. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A Rapid Development of Phrae’s Tourism
B. Exploration of the History of Indigo Industry
C. Revolutionary Progress: the Tomorrow of Phrae
D. From Tradition to Trend: Phrae’s Indigo Industry
C
For the technically minded, GPT-4o is a significant change. Before it, the primary way of interacting with ChatGPT was to type text-based questions and wait for text-based responses. Although a voice assistant was available, it was painfully slow and unnatural. I have tried, in recent months, to get ChatGPT to help me learn German. But the delays between me asking questions and ChatGPT's response, often in incomprehensible and unaccented American English, made it next to useless.
By contrast, the live-streamed demonstration published earlier this week, showed that the new AI model could analyze code, translate languages between two speakers or guide users through a basic math problem written down on a piece of paper, all seemingly in real time. It even laughed in response to a joke. According to its maker, OpenAI, this is the new normal: an AI model that can reason across audio, vision and text in real time. It appears to be another significant step towards turning science fiction into science fact.
That's great news for OpenAI, a company already valued at more than $80 billion. It's also good news for others in the AI industry who are trying to apply it into every aspect of our lives.
But it's less good for ordinary users. The ease to use helps us forget its original name, dating back to 1956: artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is certainly artificial. It's not yet intelligent — and arguably never will be even if the smooth interactivity that OpenAI has laboured hard to enable does well to paper over the cracks of the underlying technology.
When ChatGPT first made its appearance in November 2022, those who had been following the technology for decades pointed out that Al in its current form was little more than pattern-matching technology.
So try ChatGPT by all means, and play about with its voice and video interactions. But bear in mind its limitations, and that this thing isn't intelligent, but it certainly is artificial, no matter how much it pretends not to be.
8. What does the author think of the AI models before GPT-4o?
A. Dangerous. B. Intelligent. C. Convenient. D. Unhelpful.
9. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The new trend of AI models. B. GPT-4o’s improved functions.
C. GPT-4o’s possible applications. D. Doubts about the new AI model.
10. When did the term “artificial intelligence” come into existence?
A. In the 1950s. B. In the 1960s. C. In the 2000s. D. In the 2020s.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. AI will be smarter than humans. B. We should stay away from ChatGPT.
C. We shouldn’t be too optimistic about AI. D. ChatGPT will be more intelligent in the future.
D
Some of the world’s most important scientists think the idea of people living on the Mars will come true one day. Stephen Hawking believed that humans must move into space to survive. “Once we spread out into space and establish independent resident areas, our future should be safe.” he said. Robert Zubrin, a rocket scientist, agrees and thinks starting with Mars makes the most sense. He thinks sending people to Mars will allow us to learn a lot — for example, about the ability of humans to live in a very different environment.
However, scientists will need to terraform Mars for people to be able to live. Then why and how can we terraform Mars? One of the main goals of terraforming Mars is to warm it up because the average temperature there is about — 60 degrees centigrade. One idea for warming Mars is to build factories there that produce green gases. This could take many centuries. However, it should lead to rainfall and the growth of plants, resulting in more air that people can breathe.
Another big concern for scientists is whether humans can move to Mars and still stay healthy in mind and body. As a test, six people lived in a Mars-like environment in Hawaii for a year before “returning to Earth” recently. It was a 1,200-square-foot room that was on the side of a volcano and used the sun for energy. Christian e Heinicke, one of the people who lived there, said that one of the biggest issues was feeling bored. So humans on Mars would always need to keep themselves busy with various activities. Another important finding was that people living together should be able to get along and work together.
One particular organization based in Europe is planning to send the first humans to Mars before2030. The organization believes that its project is giving people worldwide the chance to be part of the first human crew ever to live on Mars for good. However, many experts think the project’s cost of USS6 million is too low for it to be successful. The American space agency NASA believes that sending people to Mars would cost about USS100 million, although this estimate is based on bringing them back to Earth, too. Regardless, it seems that humans living on Mars may well happen a lot sooner than most people believe.
12. What’s Robert Zubrin’s attitude to humans living on Mars?
A. Skeptical. B. Ambiguous. C. Favourable. D. Intolerant.
13. What does the underlined word “terraform” mean?
A. Building homes on the planet.
B. Transforming the planet into Earth.
C. Sending people to the planet from Earth.
D. Making the planet’s environment similar to Earth’s.
14. Why did scientists conduct a test in Hawaii?
A. To learn about the local customs.
B. To find ways to terraform Mars.
C. To confirm one of their concerns.
D. To prove Stephen Hawking’s belief wrong.
15. What conclusion can we draw about human living on Mars according to the author?
A. Humans’ living on Mars is impossible.
B. Humans’ living on Mars is probably practical.
C. Humans’ living on Mars will become a reality in 2030.
D. Humans’ living on Mars has met with many experts’ challenges.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It’s safe to say that with the many stressors that make up our day-to-day lives, we could all use a little more light and a little more calm. Enter “saving the day” — a mood-boosting idea. ___16___ You just need to find some peace amidst the chaos. If you spend the whole day working, you can do one thing that reclaims the day as your own.
Saving the day can be any activity and doesn’t have to be time-consuming. By doing something that you love, you’re not only making the day have some space of your own but also improving your mood. Similarly, it can help you cope with stress and nurture your well-being. ___17___ As therapists put it, “saving the day” has serious mental health benefits.
___18___ Bad days will exist whether or not you “save the day”. But if you do something that adds some relief and clarity and joy to your day, it can not only make the day a little better but help you connect with yourself, too. “Could I end the day on the note that’s like, ‘Oh, well, it wasn’t a good day, but I took care of myself?’” said Danica Harris, a somatic therapist, “This idea improves trust and safety with the self. ”
Saving the day can help prepare you for hard times, too. ___19___ And since life isn’t easy, such days will inevitably happen. If you have a bad day but do two things to “save the day”, you may go to bed feeling like it wasn’t a great day. But you’ll also know that you did everything you could to make it OK. By contrast, if you are going to bed and you’ve done nothing for yourself, you could feel like it was a bad day. The lack of self-care can lead to self-criticism and a sense of failure. ___20___
In conclusion saving the day is a powerful tool for managing stress and enhancing mental health. It’s a reminder that even on the most challenging days, there’s always something you can do to make a positive impact on your well-being.
A. This concept is simple.
B. It seems like a groundbreaking concept.
C. It can also help you find a sense of fulfillment.
D. Saving the day allows you to establish trust in yourself.
E Saving the day can be of great benefit to physical and mental health.
F. Remember that taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity.
G. In other words, it can help you become more ready to handle future bad days.

Mary could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr. Brown had asked the class to do presentations. Today was Mary’s turn. However, her hands shook so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice became softer to the point of silence. Mr. Brown kindly ended Mary’s part of the presentation, even though she did clearly not finished. He also asked Mary to stay after class for a moment.
“Mary. I know you’ re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Then Mr. Brown hesitated, before saying. “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?” Mary nodded, grateful for the chance. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached home that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Mom was baking. Mom studied Mary’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, baby?”
Tears shone in Mary’s brown eyes. She told Mom the whole story. Mom was silent for a moment. her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about everything, but you can’t talk to your class?” Mom asked and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Mary followed Mom to her bedroom. There Mom showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings and pictures. In it there was a red ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. When I started on the speech team I was quiet as a mouse, but I ended the year as the winner. It wasn’t easy at first — I wasn’t sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

But the delays between me asking questions and ChatGPT's response, often in incomprehensible and unaccented American English, made it next to useless.”(在此之前,与ChatGPT交互的主要方式是键入基于文本的问题,然后等待基于文本的响应。
根据第二段“By contrast, the live-streamed demonstration published earlier this week, showed that the new AI model could analyze code, translate languages between two speakers or guide users through a basic math problem written down on a piece of paper, all seemingly in real time. 【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The ease to use helps us forget its original name, dating back to 1956: artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is certainly artificial.”(易用性让我们忘记了它最初的名字,可以追溯到1956年:人工智能。)可知,“artificial intelligence”这个术语起源于20世纪50年代。故选A项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But bear in mind its limitations, and that this thing isn't intelligent, but it certainly is artificial, no matter how much it pretends not to be.”(但是请记住它的局限性,这个东西不是智能的,但是它肯定是人造的,不管它多么假装不是)可知,最后一段作者提醒读者要注意AI的局限性,尽管它看起来很智能,但实际上只是模式匹配技术,因此我们不应对AI过于乐观。故选C项。
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. C 15. B

In conclusion, saving the day is a powerful tool for managing stress and enhancing mental health.
E. Saving the day can be of great benefit to physical and mental health.

【答案】The possible version
Hearing Mom’s words, Mary gazed at the precious red ribbon. She imagined the scene where Mom had tried her best to overcome her fears and picked up the courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. Realizing Mary’s anxiety, Mom reassured her and reached out her hand to tie the red ribbon onto Mary’s wrist with a smile. Restored and determined, Mary gritted (咬紧牙关) her teeth to find her courage. She stood in front of a mirror and practiced. “You can do it,” she told herself when drowsiness (昏昏欲睡) fell upon her.
The next day Mary again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. She nervously lowered her head and averted her gaze, feeling numb for a few seconds. But courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the red ribbon on her wrist. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, summoned up her courage, and said “Dear fellow students.” Mary cast a glance at Mr. Brown who was standing in the corner and smiling at her. A self-reassuring smile spread across Mary’s face. She knew for sure that she had now found her courage.
