My hometown Chengdu is the home of pandas. I’m proud of this and wanted to learn more about our national treasure. Pandas have lived on the earth 1 at least 8 million years. Some people call 2 “living fossils (活化石)”.
My chance finally came during last summer vacation. I volunteered at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and 3 close contact with pandas. When I first saw a giant panda eating bamboo with its claws, I thought 4 it must be the most lovable thing. It has a round face, big black eye patches, sharp claws and a round body.
When I introduced pandas to visitors, I told them that pandas spend nearly 12 hours a day eating and they sleep in the rest of the time. 5 lucky I was! 6 baby panda was born while I was volunteering! It was amazing that the weight of the newborn panda was only 0. 1 percent of its mother’s weight—only 145 grams (克). Taking care of newborns is a very 7 task for mother pandas.
As I learned more about pandas, I realized how important it was to protect them. 58 the number of pandas has increased in recent years, pandas are still endangered.

It’s very important that we all recycle. In the future, everything 1 again. For example, when an animal dies, it becomes 2 animal’s food. Nothing is wasted. But humans have created things like plastic bags 3 can’t be broken down by nature. Our rubbish kills animals and 4 water and soil. 5 we continue making too much rubbish, the problem will only get worse. If nature can’t reuse the rubbish, we must recycle 6 .
