I’m a seventeen- year- old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have always received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great achievement.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their frequent arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part- time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, help them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, happy days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.
24. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A. His good grades got him a good job. B. He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.
C. His views on social values are well-known. D. He is satisfied with his achievements in study.
25. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship?
A. A judge. B. A helper. C. A monitor. D. A supporter.
26. What is the greatest accomplishment for the author?
A. The contribution to volunteering. B. The success in exams.
C. The recovery of confidence in life. D. The work in community service.
27. Why does the author want to study social work at university?
A. To gain a well-paid job. B. To give his life a purpose.
C. To better help the disadvantaged. D. To meet his grandparents’ expectations.

People will tell you the only way to really learn a language is to completely immerse (浸入) yourself in a country where that language is spoken. Not all language learners, of course, will have the chance to spend some time in an immersion environment. But if you can’t actually fly across the world to learn a new language, you can always create an immersion environment where you can talk to native speakers.
That’s where Babbel comes in. Babbel is one of the most popular language learning apps on the market for studying new languages at your own pace. The app stresses real-life conversational skills, so you won’t be stopped by grammatical knowledge and verb patterns.
And right now, you can get 15% off a lifetime subscription (订阅) to Babbel Language Learning ($150; stacksocial.com). A lifetime subscription is huge when it comes to getting the most out of the app, since you’ll be able to return to lessons time and time again and review whichever section or topic you might need.
So how does it all work? First, you’ll choose one of the 14 languages. While Babbel offers familiar languages like Spanish and Italian, it also offers less commonly studied ones like Polish, Indonesian and more. Once you pick your language, you’ll choose a wide range of real-life topics. Each course takes about 10 to 15 minutes, so you can pick one up on the way to work, during your lunch break, or really at any point you have some time to kill.
Beyond this, Babbel includes a ton of additional features (特色) designed to make sure you learn the language in a real, practical and correct way. The app uses speech recognition technology to make sure your pronunciation is correct compared with how native speakers would say certain words.
28. What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A. The amazing experiences of travelling. B. Different ways to learn a new language.
C. The importance of language learning environment. D. Chances to communicate with native speakers.
29. What can we know about Babbel?
A. It’s a tool for learning languages. B. It is designed in various types.
C. It focuses more on grammar points. D. It’s the most popular app in the market.
30. What should the users do first to learn with the app?
A. Choose the place to learn a course. B. Pick the language they want to learn.
C. Schedule the reading time. D. Choose a proper topic.
31. Why does Babbel use speech recognition technology?
A. To represent its additional features. B. To meet the needs of native speakers.
C. To compare differences between words. D. To make the pronunciation correct.

Change can be unsettling. Good or bad, exciting or unexpected, there’s an undeniable anxiety that accompanies seeing our lives shift. Thankfully, nature reminds us that entering a new season in our lives is nothing to fear but something to enjoy.
What’s now known as “leaf-peeping” has become a highly profitable form of tourism in the United States. A research shows that across states in the eastern half of the country, fall foliage (叶子) tourism contributes more than $30 billion to local economies. And even though climate change has made int more difficult to predict when exactly foliage will peak, it hasn’t stopped people from trying to figure it out. Tourism leaders from the Smoky Mountains recently released their annual fall foliage prediction map which helps travelers plan out when they have the best chance to catch those beautiful autumn views.
Perhaps part of what makes the foliage so special is the belief that it’s temporary. Eventually, branches will become bare, and we’ll stop taking photos for social media. And as the seasons change and we feel that familiar longing for what was, trees will once again embrace (欣然接受) their evolution.
Even when they aren’t decorated with flashy fall colors and their internal systems slow down, trees are still supporting the ecosystem. Their fallen leaves are broken down by bacteria and fungi and provide the soil with nutrients the tree needs to grow. Insects take up shelter in their bark, eventually becoming food for other wildlife seeking a place to nest. Their strong roots stabilize the soil, preventing erosion (侵蚀) from winter snowmelt.
Right now trees around the country are already beginning to welcome their next chapter. During this time of the year, it feels like forests are just offering endless joy for free. And fall foliage is an everlasting reminder that the growth with changes is beautiful.
32. What does “leaf-peeping” refer to?
A. A form of tourism where people go to see fall foliage.
B. A measure taken by tourism leaders to protect trees.
C. A research about the effects of climate change on trees.
D. A method for predicting when fall foliage will peak.
33. Why do people find fall foliage so special?
A. It brings change to daily life. B. It contributes to local economy.
C. It helps preserve ecosystems. D. It lasts only for a short time.
34. What can we learn about trees in fall from paragraph 4?
A. They are easily damaged by bacteria. B. They stop rooting due to cold weather.
C. They continue providing shelter for wildlife. D. They play a role in reducing snowfall.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Trees Supporting the Ecosystem B. Lesson from Trees: Embracing Change
C. Fall Foliage Tourism in the US D. Climate Changes in the Season of Fall

They were no longer as comfortable as they should be, and David could tell that George needed a new pair of shoes and he decided to do something special for his friend on his birthday.
David’s thoughtful plan started with a conversation with his mum. He explained how much he cared for his friend George and how he wanted to gift him a pair of shoes for his birthday.
His mum, a kind and wise woman, agreed that it was a wonderful idea. She also wanted to teach David an important lesson about earning and giving.

Right now, trees around the country are already beginning to welcome their next chapter.
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. C 35. B

I can give you some money for doing extra housework around the house. You can earn the money you need to buy the shoes. What do you think? “David’s eyes lit up, and he smiled widely. “That’s a great idea, Mum! I want to do it. ”

Finally, George’s birthday came and David invited George to his home for a celebration. David led George to the living room. “George,” David said, “I have a surprise for you.” George was a little confused. David took out a present wrapped in shiny paper. He handed it to George, saying, “Happy Birthday, my friend!” George was filled with curiosity as he carefully unwrapped the gift. The surprise and happiness on his face were evident as he saw the new pair of shoes. David explained, “I wanted to get you something special for your birthday, and I saved up money to buy these shoes for you.”
George was so moved by the gift he received. He couldn’t imagine how long it took David to save the money to buy the gift. His eyes were filled with excited tears, and he gave David a big hug, “You’re an angel, David! Thanks!” David was also so happy that George liked the gift. For George, the shoes David had given him weren’t just a pair of shoes; they were a symbol of their friendship. The two friends shared a heart-warming moment, and their friendship grew even stronger. They knew that the joy of giving and the warmth of true friendship were the best gifts of all.
