Do you know that the human brain doesn’t reach full maturity (成熟) until people are in their mid-20s? Brains develop our emotions first and our capacity for reasoning second.
Before the age of about 25, the brain relies heavily on the limbic system (大脑边缘系统), which is responsible for emotional responses, while the logical, decision-making part (known as the prefrontal cortex) is still in the process of developing. It’s not that the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质) doesn’t function at all for the first 25 years of life — rather, that it’s a work in progress.
To understand how the mind works, it can be useful to know the roles that these two parts of the brain play. The limbic system processes sensory information — everything you see, smell, touch, taste, hear. When you sense danger, this translates to fear and will likely lead to action. It’s also the part of the brain involved in seeking out rewards and new experiences, which might be found through spending time with friends or doing exciting activities. Meanwhile, some of the important roles of the prefrontal cortex are to plan ahead, control impulsive (易冲动的) behaviours, and drive social interaction and self-awareness. It might be helpful to think of the limbic system as the accelerator and the prefrontal cortex as the brakes.
Having a fully functioning accelerator when your brakes don’t quite work yet might seem like a recipe for disaster — and sometimes it can be. But your brain is evolving in this way for a good reason: to allow you to adapt to your environment. Scientists call this plasticity (可塑性). This special quality is what makes the teen years the best time to keep your options open, learn new skills, and to prepare for the future. In evolutionary terms, it’s extremely beneficial, but can also come with some challenges.
Understanding more about the inner workings of the brain at different life stages can help you to better respond, communicate, and seek support when it’s needed. Plus, it can teach you to be nicer to yourself and let go of mistakes. It’s worth remembering that not everything you do is a fully conscious decision — some of it is heavily influenced by the way your developing brain works.

5. What is more likely to occur in teenagers and young adults?
A. Higher levels of self-control. B. Afore frequent impulsive behaviors.
C. More cautious risk assessment. D. Stronger long-term planning abilities.
6. Which of the following can you infer from the passage?
A. The prefrontal cortex doesn’t function for the first 25 years.
B. The limbic system develops later than the prefrontal cortex.
C. Sensory information is closely related to the prefrontal cortex.
D. Immature decisions are acceptable during developmental years.
7. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph?

B. Biological basis of adolescent risk-taking.
C. Emotional Functions of the limbic system.
D. Value of understanding brain development.
C
For decades, scientists hypothesized that cognitively demanding tasks, such as writing or solving math problems, require more energy than easier tasks like scrolling short videos on the phone or looking out of the window. However, recent research proves the view wrong. Our brains perform massively complex and metabolically costly computations all day long. “Whether you’ re engaged in a cognitively demanding task at work, or you’ re staring off into space, your brain is using roughly the same amount of energy,” says neuroscientist Todd Braver of Washington University in St. Louis.
In fact, what feels more challenging is when a task requires the brain to go against its usual habits. Cognitively demanding work often requires the coordination (协作) of many different brain regions in novel patterns, while silencing circuits that frequently fire together.
Studies have found that pushing against our brain’s habits triggers an emotional response, making us feel uncomfortable. “It’s aversive, and it just feels bad,” says Michael Inzlicht, a psychologist from the University of Toronto. But he points out that emotional responses are subjective: They are interpretations of sensations in our bodies and brains. And we can influence how much we pay attention to these sensations and even how we interpret them. We often overestimate the struggle and pain required to complete cognitive tasks. This initial overestimation can lead us to procrastinate, or even avoid the task altogether.
Studies suggest that if we can get past that initial hurdle of starting a task, then thinking becomes easier. One way to do that is to pay attention to the benefits instead of the efforts required. In a study published in the journal Science in 2020, Andrew Westbrook, a neuroscientist at Rutgers University, and his colleagues gave participants the choice of solving an easy memory puzzle for a small amount of money or a much harder puzzle for more money. The options were displayed on a screen, and participants’ eye movements were tracked as they decided which puzzle to attempt. When people spent more time looking at the reward for the challenging puzzle, they were more likely to choose it. If our mind’s eye, or our attentional focus, is on the benefits of an option, over time we’ re more likely to choose to do hard things.
Performing complex mental tasks will also be less painful if the exertion of mental effort is habitized. When we don’t have to make a decision to focus every day, we will save ourselves considering the costs or consequences. To make cognitively demanding tasks a habit, try to do them every day at the same time and in the same place. Add a ritual before the work starts, such as turning off the phone and launching an app to block distracting websites. After a few weeks, concentrating deeply won’t just feel easier; it will actually be easier.
8 People may feel certain cognitive task demanding because of ________.
A. more brain energy consumption B. the complexity of computations
C. the higher level of difficulty D. new coordination of brain parts
9. The author quotes the 2020 study mainly to ________ .
A. support a solution B. present a case
C. analyze the causes D. challenge an assumption
10. What can be inferred from the passage?
A Overestimation promotes efficiency.
B. Personal perception determines motivation.
C. Focusing on rewards enhances performance.
D. Brain counteraction triggers positive emotions.
11. Which of the following can make mental work feel easier?
A. Receiving continuous support when feeling down.
B. Seeking professional help when meeting a deadline.
C. Reading thick literary classics for twenty minutes daily.
D. Breaking down a challenging project into smaller tasks.
D
Imagining a human being without historical sense is scary. The thought of living exclusively in a present moment is scary. Scarier still is the thought of an entire generation, not to mention society, operating with a lack of a sense of history. And yet that is exactly the situation in which we find ourselves today.
The people and events of history may be rooted in the past, but how we talk about those things, what we write about them, and how we teach them—in other words, how we practise history as the record of human experience—tell us a lot about who we are and what we value right now. Thinking of ourselves as a chapter in an as-yet unwritten history book, on the other hand, is likely to force deeper self-reflection: Whose stories will we stand up for? What values will we defend? What models will we offer following generations? In an era of environmental change, rising inequality and great shifts in the international political context, we need to understand how our institutions have developed. History gives us power. No other subject helps us to understand so comprehensively what it is to be human.
The implications of ignorance of what have happened are incredible, but the ignorance itself isn’t entirely surprising given the lowered status of history in most schools. The discipline of history has become sidelined (边缘化). “History fights for its place in the curriculum with geography,” Dr. Bain observed, “but its attention to time, place and context is what makes it really distinct.” In other words, history doesn’t simply tell us how to be good citizens: It equips us with the knowledge we need to comprehend our world clearly, and the ability to analyze it accurately.
Clearly, in an age of “fake news”, engaged citizens need to be culturally literate, critical thinkers. There is no better subject than history to develop an appreciation of context and an ability to look for evidence. We should expect a logical history curriculum for our children. If it were common to hear graduates claim that they’d never learned to add, subtract, multiply and divide, there would be a severe protest. So should there be now.
12. What is the situation the author mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. The fear of the past. B. The ignorance of history.
C. The exclusion of the present. D. The dissatisfaction of society.
13. What does the author mainly stress in paragraph 2?
A. Consequences of overlooking history.
B. Significance of mastering all subjects.
C. Insights from history for today and tomorrow.
D. Resolutions of the current international issues.
14. Which one of the following ideas might Dr. Bain agree with?
A. Critical thinking is key to studying history well.
B. Schools should enhance the status of history curriculum.
C. Ignorance of history is not as terrible as expected in schools.
D. Geography proves more meaningful and practical than history.
15. What does the underlined sentence “So should there be now.” mean?
A. The historical sense can help us differentiate the news.
B. People are dissatisfied with graduates’ ability to calculate.
C. We should make history curriculum more logical and critical.
D. We should pay the same attention to history as to other subjects.

Simon was born with a very poor vision. However to add insult to injury, Simon’s eyes are extremely sensitive to light, which is more frustrating. While others cheer and run outside on sunny days, Simon can only stay at home or wear his tightly wrapped sun hat.
At school, Simon was haunted by a deep sense of inferiority. In class, he never raised his hand, afraid of classmates’ eyes on him. He sat in silence as others participated in discussions and activities effortlessly, while he felt trapped in his own shell of self-doubt. He constantly compared himself to others and always found himself lacking. The weight of his insecurities made every day at school a struggle.
However, one’s life isn’t defined by these when faced with a particular set of circumstances. The best thing to do is accept them and act within the context.
For Simon, the particular was music, which brought him endless strength. When Simon played the piano, he could feel that every change in tone and rhythm created colorful sounds. The music came alive with soft and loud keys. For a boy with a sharp sense of hearing, these details transformed the performance into an emotionally charged experience.
One day in a music class, the whole class were listening to a piano piece while checking the notes in the music textbooks. Simon’s eyes were shining bright as he listened to the different instruments blend together. Suddenly, he frowned his brows. He quickly bent over the music textbook, searched through the lines in his music textbook and then pointed to a certain note. He caught a mistake. He looked in the teacher’s direction, wanting to say something, but then hesitated. He bit his lip and seemed to have made up his mind.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

8. People may feel certain cognitive task demanding because of ________.
A. more brain energy consumption B. the complexity of computations
C. the higher level of difficulty D. new coordination of brain parts
9. The author quotes the 2020 study mainly to ________ .
A. support a solution B. present a case
C. analyze the causes D. challenge an assumption
10 What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Overestimation promotes efficiency.

C Focusing on rewards enhances performance.

Imagining a human being without historical sense is scary. The thought of living exclusively in a present moment is scary. Scarier still is the thought of an entire generation not to mention society, operating with a lack of a sense of history.
A The historical sense can help us differentiate the news.
B. People are dissatisfied with graduates’ ability to calculate.
C. We should make history curriculum more logical and critical.
D. We should pay the same attention to history as to other subjects.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. D

We should pay the same attention to history as to other subjects.(我们对待历史应该像对待其他学科一样重视)合乎题意。故选D。

Limiting your focus to one single being. This limitation creates a deeper connection between you and your fellow creature, whether a sunflower pushing through a crack (裂缝) in the sidewalk, or a strange-looking mushroom. ____18____ By exploring this nature-being, you gain a richer understanding and appreciation for its existence.
____19____ It can also be about experiencing the natural world from a different angle. Try writing a letter to your wild friend: Choose a plant, animal, or natural element. Imagine how the world might appear through the eyes and ears of them. They also have stories to tell.
Nature writing is a journey of continuous discovery. ____20____ Keep writing, keep exploring your local environment, and keep rewilding yourself. Share your experiences and remember, even the smallest backyard can be a place for wonder and inspiration.
A. Or do you smell the natural smell of wet soil in the air?
B. Nature writing isn’t just about humans observing nature.
C. How does a plant sense the surroundings compared to you?
D. Let’s explore some tips to set off on your wild writing journey.

Simon was born with a very poor vision. However, to add insult to injury, Simon’s eyes are extremely sensitive to light, which is more frustrating.

【答案】
Finally, Simon raised his hand, and the teacher stopped the music. “Yes, Simon?” the teacher asked, surprised by his sudden action. Simon took a deep breath and said, “I think there’s a mistake in the music. The note played doesn’t match the one in the textbook.” The teacher, intrigued, replayed the section and checked the textbook. To everyone’s surprise, Simon was right. The teacher praised Simon for his keen sense of hearing and encouraged him to share more in class. Simon felt a wave of pride wash over him, realizing that his unique ability was valuable.
After class, Simon was surrounded by his admiring classmates. They were amazed by his musical talent and began asking him questions about music. For the first time, Simon felt included and appreciated. His classmates’ admiration boosted his confidence, and he started to participate more in class. Simon realized that his differences made him special, and he no longer felt inferior. Music had not only given him strength but also a voice, and he was ready to use it.
