Every morning on the island of Oahu, students at Pu’ öhala Elementary gather on a field as towering mountains watch them from the mist. Their day starts with songs in ‘ölelo Hawai’i, the islands’ native language, restating values of respect and justice that their teachers hope will guide them through their education, and throughout their lives.
Like most kids their age, they’re not concerned about the significance of the language they’re learning. Still, they have a weighty responsibility: to receive the torch (火炬) and ensure the security of ‘ölelo Hawai’ i for future generations.
It was only 50 years ago that the language was on the edge of extinction. Though the situation is much improved, in many ways ‘ölelo Hawai’ i is still on life support. Teachers say there’s a huge enthusiasm for school kids to learn the language, but as they grow up, they’re encouraged to focus on “more useful” subjects and use English, which are believed to assist them in achieving success in their work. In 2016, there were 18, 610 Hawaiian speakers on the islands.
“One hundred thousand is the approximate number of speakers needed to consider the language safe, ” says Solomon, professor of Hawaiian language at University of Hawai’i at Manoa. “The idea is that there are enough people passing it on to the next generation, socializing their children to use the language in all domains of life, to express all thoughts and needs and desires. ”
Fortunately, the kids of Pu’ öhala Elementary will take the responsibility to continue the work of the current young adults defending the language, expanding access to ‘ölelo Hawai’i in part through TikTok and Instagram, and making the language a practical skill in adulthood. These youth, along with those committed to recovering the language from previous generations, share their hopes for the better.
4. What are the students at Pu’ öhala Elementary expected to do?
A. To figure out the value of life. B. To go out of the island of Oahu.
C. To pass their native language down. D. To draw people’s attention to folk songs.
5. What makes the students abandon ‘ölelo Hawai’i?
A. Career development. B. The improved situation.
C. Lack of enthusiasm. D. Little educational support.
6. What is the current situation of ‘ölelo Hawai’i according to professor Solomon?
A. It is used in all walks of life. B. It is considered a safe language.
C. It demands more speakers to be safe. D. It has one hundred thousand speakers.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of ‘ölelo Hawai’i?
A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Unclear. D. Reserved.

Imagine accessing traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) services with just a tap on your smartphone. What once required a hospital visit — often leading to long waits and considerable inconveniences, especially for the elderly — is now available at your fingertips.
The innovative mini-program “Wang She Wen Shan” (Tongue Diagnosis and Dietary Guidance) is transforming TCM consultations. Users can now receive a detailed health report in under two minutes simply by taking a quick snapshot of their tongue. More than that, this AI-powered tool also provides personalized dietary and wellness recommendations.
According to the mini-program’s developers, this transformation has been made possible through the integration of the traditional TCM tongue diagnosis method with advanced AI image recognition technology. The program has been trained on over 20,000 clinical tongue images, enabling it to provide accurate and convenient health assessments.
Since July 2023, Guangzhou has been at the forefront of piloting TCM services with AI assistance. Trained by TCM doctors from local hospitals, this device has “learned” to identify users’ constitution types through facial and tongue images and provide personalized health recommendations. By October 2023, this smart device had been adopted in 11 communities across Guangzhou, serving over 12,000 residents. In addition, other AI-driven innovations, such as prescription systems, pulse signal acquisition systems, and massage robots, are making their way into public use, bringing a high-tech touch to traditional medicine.
Despite the progress made, the integration of AI into TCM is still in its early stages. One of the primary hurdles is the lack of theoretical standardization within TCM. Another challenge lies in the integration of medical and engineering technologies.
Anyway, there is every reason to believe that the integration of AI into TCM will profoundly revolutionize healthcare by making TCM more accessible and efficient. It holds significant promise for underserved areas with limited medical resources. Nevertheless, as the journey is only beginning, it is crucial to acknowledge its current limitations in clinical settings. While AI offers substantial potential for TCM, accurate diagnosis still relies heavily on the expertise of physicians. AI is intended to complement — not replace — human doctors.
8. What do we know about "Wang She Wen Shan"?
A. It provides unchanging dietary and wellness suggestions for users.
B. It requires users to take a photo of their tongue for consultation.
C. It has been trained on abundant tongue images of medical staff.
D. It fails to function properly without facial recognition technology.
9. What does the underlined word in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Differences.
B. Losses.
C. Puzzles.
D. Limitations.
10. Who might benefit most from the mini-program?
A. Folks in places with few experienced doctors.
B. Patients with symptoms rarely seen or reported.
C. Physicians with great diagnostic capabilities.
D. Senior citizens with difficulty using smartphones.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. AI: The Future of TCM
B. Doctors at Your Fingertips
C. Modernized TCM with AI
D. Integration of AI into Medicine

Almost all food companies calculate the calorie content of their offerings using a mathematical formula (公式). They first measure how many grams of carbohydrate (碳水化合物), protein and fat are in the food. This formula is known as the Atwater system. Then they multiply (乘以) each of those amounts by a set value. There are four calories per gram of carbohydrate or protein and nine calories per gram of fat. The sum of those values will show up as the calorie count on a food label.
The numbers in this formula are called Atwater factors. They come from data collected more than 100 years ago by nutritionist Wilbur O. Atwater. Atwater asked volunteers to eat different foods. Then he measured how much energy their bodies got from each one by comparing the energy in the food with the energy left over in their feces and urine.
According to the formula, the calorie content in a gram of fat is the same whether that fat comes from a hamburger, a bag of almonds (杏仁) or a plate of French fries. But scientists have found that the Atwater system isn’t perfect.
David Baer is a professor at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in Maryland. His team has shown that some foods do not match the Atwater factors. For example, some plants have tough cell walls. Chewing plant-based foods, such as nuts, consumes some of these walls but not all. So some of these nutrients will pass out of the body, undigested.
Making foods easier to digest through cooking or other processes can also change the amount of calories available to the body. For example, Baer’s team has found that almond butter provides more calories per gram than whole almonds. The Atwater system, however, predicts each should deliver the same amount.
The Atwater system may have problems, but it is simple and easy to use. Though other systems have been proposed, none is the best.
12. What is the Atwater system mainly used for?
A Measuring the weight of food.
B. Calculating the calorie content of food.
C. Predicting the energy output of the body.
D. Determining the nutritional value of food.
13. According to David Baer’s team, what makes some foods not match the Atwater factors?
A. The difficulty in digesting certain foods.
B. The high calorie content in processed foods.
C. The difference in the way people chew food.
D. The variety of nutrients in different foods.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The Atwater system is the best way to calculate calories.
B. None of the proposed systems is better than the Atwater system.
C. Other systems are more complex but more accurate than the Atwater system.
D. Despite its problems the Atwater system remains popular due to its simplicity.
15. Where does this passage most probably come from?
A. A health and fitness website. B. A cooking magazine.
C. A history book. D. A science journal.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every afternoon I had to go to the store with my father, and the people there would give us things that were past the expiration date(有效期)but hadn't gone bad. Usually we received things like sliced vegetables, pieces of fruit, bread, and slices of cake or pie. We gave these to the homeless along with the sandwiches and tea.
My father and several volunteers from the church gathered every day in the park to feed the hungry. I was glad I didn't have to go to the feedings. It was enough trouble just getting everything ready. I really didn't understand why my father bothered with it. I couldn't wait for him to leave. I looked forward to a whole Saturday by myself. I planned to watch some television, talk with my friends on the phone, and maybe do some shopping during the afternoon.
It didn't take long for my plans to change and my happiness to disappear. Dad came in while I was finishing and stood behind me.
"I'm going to need your help today. Some of the others that usually help me won't be able to make it."
"Dad, I can't today," I complained. "I have plans, television, friends, shopping, and I was maybe going to go to the pool."
He just gave me the you-should-be-ashamed-of-yourself look.
"Fine." I had to give in. "It's not like I have a life."
I was really upset my day was now ruined. I finished packing the sandwiches and followed Dad out to the van. I wanted to cry. This was going to be the worst day ever. My dad always drove the church van which also contained clothes and small bags filled with personal items as well as some chairs and a long table.
He pulled out of the driveway to head downtown. I looked out the window and watched as we drove past kids playing in their front yards. I felt like a prisoner forced to perform community service.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When we arrived at the park, people were already gathered under a tree waiting for us.

Almost all food companies calculate the calorie content of their offerings using a mathematical formula (公式). They first measure how many grams of carbohydrate (碳水化合物) protein and fat are in the food.
A. Measuring the weight of food.
D. Despite its problems, the Atwater system remains popular due to its simplicity.
15. Where does this passage most probably come from?
A. A health and fitness website. B. A cooking magazine.
C. A history book. D. A science journal.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. A

My dad always drove the church van, which also contained clothes and small bags filled with personal items as well as some chairs and a long table.
He pulled out of the driveway to head downtown. I looked out the window and watched as we drove past kids playing in their front yards. I felt like a prisoner forced to perform community service.

【答案】When we arrived at the park, people were already gathered under a tree waiting for us. I couldn’t believe how many people were there, and all of them were homeless. I was surprised to learn my dad knew most of them by name. He also seemed to know what each one needed and what they had suffered to land them on the street. One old man called Adonis told me if it hadn’t been for my father he didn’t think he would have found Jesus. When everyone was gone, we loaded things back into the van.
Seeing their smiles, I understood why my father did so much to help them. Now I understood why my father did so much to help the homeless. I could tell he loved seeing their smiles of happiness. I did too. That day with my dad taught me that there will always be someone smarter, prettier, or richer than me, and there will also always be someone less fortunate. The difference is in the individual willing to take the opportunity to help others, even if it means sacrificing something of their own.
