A
East Africa is one of the best places to enjoy incredible hikes. Its soaring hills and mountains with accessible summits and snaking forest trails have made it the home of hiking experiences to suit most time-frames and fitness levels.
Mount Meru
As Tanzania’s second highest mountain, Mount Meru is often used by mountaineers for an adaptation training before trying to conquer Kilimanjaro. Climbing Mount Meru passes through many different vegetation (植被) zones. The dry forest of the lower region gives way to a dense mountain rainforest, which then turns into bush. The trail also passes through the habitats of a number of wild animals including buffaloes, baboons and giraffes.
Mount Kenya
At 5,199 meters above sea level, Mount Kenya is an ancient extinct volcano. Mount Kenya has three peaks — Batian, Nelion and Lenana, among which only Lenana can be reached by average trekkers (徒步者) and the other two only for technical climbers. Mount Kenya is also regarded as a holy mountain by all the communities living around it. They use the mountain for traditional rituals based on the belief that their traditional god Ngai and his wife Mumbi live on the peak of the mountain.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro reaches 5,895 meters above sea level. It can be climbed at any time of the year but there is usually a lot more rain during April, May and November. At the lower levels, you will pass through cultivated farmlands rising through tropical rainforest onto alpine meadows and finally the barren landscape leading to the snow and ice capped summit. The lower levels also offer the chance to view a wide variety of animals, birds and fauna in their natural habitat.
Usambara Mountain Range
For hikers who do not want to undergo the difficulties of climbing challenging peaks like Kilimanjaro or Kenya, Tanzania’s Usambara Mountain Range offers a great alternative. Unlike the hikes that require permits and the company of park rangers, it is casual, and easily accessible. At 2,440 meters, Usambara Mountain is home to over 3,000 plant species and over 600 tree species.
21. Why do mountaineers climb Mount Meru first before they do Kilimanjaro?
A. To view a wide variety of animals. B. To admire different vegetation zones.
C. To get used to the situation of Kilimanjaro. D. To avoid the hardship of climbing Kilimanjaro.
22. What do we know about Mount Kenya?
A. It is an active volcano.
B. It is easier to climb compared with Kilimanjaro.
C. It is sacred in the eyes of residents living around it.
D. Its three peaks can be accessible to inexperienced trekkers.
23. What is special about Usambara Mountain Range?
A. It is hard to get access to.
B. It is home to unique plant species.
C. It can be climbed at any time of the year.
D. It doesn’t need park rangers to accompany the climbers.
B
When a colleague sent John McFall a job advertisement for would-be astronauts, his reaction was swift. All he had in his head was that it would be awesome to go to space. However, doing so would involve breaking through a glass ceiling — one that has held firm for more than six decades of space exploration.
After losing his right leg at the age of 19 in a motorcycle accident, McFall went on to become a Paralympic athlete, winning bronze in Beijing, and later becoming a surgeon. In 2022, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced that he would join them in seeking to push the boundaries of space exploration after a demanding selection process. Three years after spotting the job posting by ESA, McFall is now on track to become the world’s first astronaut with a disability.
There’s no guarantee that McFall will go into space. Instead the agency has been putting him through the requirements of a six-month mission to the International Space Station. The tests are aimed at exploring questions such as how McFall would move and stabilize himself in microgravity and how conditions in space would affect his prosthesis (假肢). So far, all signs have suggested that space flight is feasible for McFall, giving hope that he — or someone with a similar disability — could eventually train for an upcoming mission.
Since starting with the ESA, he has sought to gently push pack against the widely used title of parastronaut. “I’m not a parasurgeon; I’m a surgeon. I’m not a paraded; I’m a dad,” he said, describing it as a “slippery slope” to add “para” in front of anything done by someone with a physical disability.
McFall is hoping to challenge people’s perception of what an astronaut looks like. He said, “My job is to make sure that people have a well-rounded and informed definition of disability and what being disabled means.”
24. Why does going to space involve breaking through a glass ceiling?
A. Because McFall feels it awful to go to space.
B. Because McFall has to pass a glass breaking test.
C. Because there has been no disabled astronaut to date.
D. Because the boundaries of space exploration are easy to push.
25. What have the signs indicated so far?
A. The tests are unfair and inhuman. B. McFall will definitely go to space.
C. MeFall’s hope for the future is lost. D. Space flight is workable for MacFall.
26. What does McFall want to do according to the last two paragraphs?
A. Join hands with those disabled.
B. Push people to slip over on a slope.
C. Deepen people’s understanding of disability.
D. Protest strongly against the use of “parastronaut”.
27. Which of the following can best describe John McFall?
A. Generous and strict. B. Courageous and inspiring.
C. Ambitious and talented. D. Warm-hearted and outgoing.
C
None of us like to think we’d walk on by when someone needed our help. But sometimes we behave in ways we wouldn’t expect when encountering a situation we are unsure about. Research from the British Heart Foundation has suggested that a third of people would not perform first aid if they saw someone collapse on the street, with some even admitting they wouldn’t call an ambulance. This can sometimes mean that no one helps when someone desperately needs it. However, a lot of tragic events urge us to take immediate action.
One of the most famous examples of this is the tragic case of Kitty Genovese who was fatally stabbed (刺、捅) in Kew Gardens, New York, in 1964. Follow-up investigations concluded that several people saw or heard what was happening, but did nothing to intervene. This has been termed the “bystander effect”—a well-known psychological phenomenon that individuals are less likely to offer help to someone when other people are present. The more people there are, the less likely they are to help.
There are various factors contributing to this effect — people think that others will get involved or intervene. Afterwards people often say they did not feel qualified or senior or important enough to be the one to intervene. It is also partly down to “pluralistic ignorance” — since everyone is not reacting to the emergency, they don’t need to either; it’s not serious because no one else is doing anything.
Self-awareness is the best antidote to it. When encountering an emergency, think to yourself how you would behave if you were on your own. Ignore everyone else and how they are behaving and go with your instinct (直觉) —if you’d call an ambulance, do it. If you’d run for help, do it. If that’s how you would have behaved when you were on your own then that’s probably the right course of action.
28. According to the first paragraph, what would some people do when someone needs help?
A. To behave in proper ways. B. To rush to give a hand.
C. To give immediate first aid. D. To hesitate to intervene.
29. Which of the following statements about “bystander effect” is correct?
A. It is a rare psychological phenomenon.
B. People are unwilling to help for lack of qualification.
C. Someone will step in when more people are gathering.
D It results from “pluralistic ignorance” to some degree.
30. What does the underlined word “antidote” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Devotion. B. Introduction. C. Solution. D. Resistance.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Don’t Be a Bystander B. Stay away from Emergencies
C. Raise Awareness of First Aid D. Don’t Intervene in “Bystander Effect”
D
Heat impacts on food production now regularly present themselves.
“We have been worried about this for years, saying the issue was going to get worse —now it is,” says Zitouni Ould-Dada, deputy director in the Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). “Crops need a norm (常态); any changes or disturbance to cycles will lead to negative impacts. Some crops simply won’t grow in certain areas any more. Drought affects the quality of the soil, the minerals, and the productivity of the plant.”
Research shows that yields of some crops, such as maize and wheat in many lower-latitude regions, have already been affected by climate change. However, yields of maize, wheat and sugar beet in higher latitudes have been affected positively in recent decades. “Some crops are more tolerant of heat but, over time, if these temperatures become the norm, and are followed by extremely high heat on occasion, all crops eventually get affected.” Ould-Dada warns.
Heat impacts are not only limited to food production. Smaller yields and changing growing zones could lead to greater use of fertilisers and water, and the further loss of biodiversity. Domestic animals are just as vulnerable (易受……伤害的) to heat stress, with knock-on impacts on cattle raised for meat and dairy animals. Meanwhile, fisheries and aquaculture (水产养殖业) face issues around warmer waters and acidification.
“A heating world,” says Ould-Dada, “is forcing us to rethink how we produce food, process it and store it.” The key message, argues Ould-Dada, is for farmers to exchange best practice and diversify: if one crop falls to heat, another may grow. Besides, Farmers could be creative, for example, by installing solar panels in fields; plants benefit from shade and the panels generate electricity and gather rainwater. “Food production itself will cause the emission of CO. We have to do this in a way that benefits nature, the livelihoods of farmers and local communities,” adds Ould-Dada.
32 What effect does heat have on food production according to the passage?
A. The overall yields of food have not been affected.
B. The output of certain crops in lower latitudes has increased.
C. Some crops are not likely to adapt to certain areas any more.
D. Some crops more tolerant of heat won’t get affected over time.
33. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A. Further heat impacts. B. Heat impacts on food production.
C. The loss of biodiversity. D. Issues on fisheries and aquaculture.
34. What is the key to coping with heat impacts on food production?
A. Creating new plant species. B. Processing and storing food.
C. Installing solar panels in fields. D. Sharing methods and varying crops.
35. What can be inferred from Ould-Dada’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Farmers need to put theory into practice in time.
B. We had better take environment-friendly measures.
C. A heating world is pushing us to produce healthy food.
D. Food production is merely to blame for climate change.

We watch our salt and fat intake to protect our hearts. We exercise and take calcium to protect our bones. We use sunscreen to protect our skin. But what can we do to protect our eyes? ____36____
Wear safety glasses
You don’t have to be a construction or factory worker to need protective eyewear. ____37____ It’s estimated that up to 90 percent of sport-related eye injuries are preventable with proper eye protection. Experts recommend sport or safety glasses with polycarbonate lenses, which is a type of plastic that will not easily break.
Take a break from screens
There’s no scientific evidence that the light from electronic screens damages eyes. But staring at a screen can leave eyes tired and may blur (模糊) vision. Experts suggest following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes take a break and look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
One reason for eye tiredness during screen use is that people tend to blink less when staring at computer screens, which can lead to dryness. ____38____ If you still feel your eyes are dry or getting tired, or your vision is occasionally blurred, use eye drops.
____39____
First, the obvious: smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs, but it can harm eyes and cause dry eyes. It also increases the risk of cataracts and can harm the eye nerve.
It was the end of the summer holiday, and school would open in two weeks, which means we kids only had a very short period of time to enjoy. However, the holiday was so boring that it was impossible for me to find something fun to do. When I had successfully contacted all of my friends, one of them suggested that we all should go down to the sea and just relax.
It wasn’t fun at first, just relaxing on the beach, seeing an old man repair an ancient-looking boat, but it was clearly on our minds to jump into the sea and just take a swim in the clear cold water because it was getting so hot. So we stripped off our clothes and dived into the water. The salt water was so truly cool and refreshing that we splashed cold water in each other’s faces.
“You shouldn’t swim that day,” The old man advised. “There is a storm coming up.” Enjoying the soft sea wind, I didn’t take it seriously. “If you go further there, you’ll be sorry,” the old man called after me. “Thanks for your reminding, we know very well in our heart.” I replied and walked into the gentle waves. We were having so much fun that I didn’t notice how far I had reached into the sea as the water had almost reached my chest.
Suddenly, a gust of wind lifted a huge wave over me and threw me further away. My friends failed to reach me so they swam ashore and screamed for help. Then white caps began rolling in and it became harder to swim against the currents (水流). Before I knew it, before I could do anything to maintain my balance in the deep water, I was bringing my whole entire body into the sea.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1: Frightened, I tried to resurface from the water.

W: I think I’d like to be a pilot and fly people around the world.
M: That sounds fun. I thought you always wanted to be a lawyer, though.
W: I used to, but that was last year. Now, I want to learn how to fly a plane.
M: Do you think we’ll still be friends in ten years?
W: Of course! I visit you in New York and you can visit me in Rome.

A
East Africa is one of the best places to enjoy incredible hikes.
C 22. C 23. D

B Because McFall has to pass a glass breaking test.
C 25. D 26. C 27. B
根据第一段中的“However, doing so would involve breaking through a glass ceiling — one that has held firm for more than six decades of space exploration.(然而,这样做将需要打破一个玻璃天花板——一个在太空探索的六十多年里一直存在的天花板。)”和第二段第一句McFall的情况的描述“After losing his right leg at the age of 19 in a motorcycle accident, McFall went on to become a Paralympic athlete, winning bronze in Beijing, and later becoming a surgeon.(19岁时,在一次摩托车事故中失去右腿后,McFall成为了一名残奥会运动员,在北京获得了铜牌,后来成为了一名外科医生。)”
根据第三段最后一句“So far, all signs have suggested that space flight is feasible for McFall, giving hope that he — or someone with a similar disability — could eventually train for an upcoming mission.(到目前为止,所有的迹象都表明,太空飞行对McFall来说是可行的,这给了他希望,即他或一个有类似残疾的人最终可以为即将到来的任务进行训练。)”
根据最后两段内容“Since starting with the ESA, he has sought to gently push pack against the widely used title of parastronaut. ‘I’m not a parasurgeon; I’m a surgeon. I’m not a paraded; I’m a dad,’ he said, describing it as a ‘slippery slope’ to add ‘para’ in front of anything done by someone with a physical disability. McFall is hoping to challenge people’s perception of what an astronaut looks like. He said, ‘My job is to make sure that people have a well-rounded and informed definition of disability and what being disabled means.’(自加入欧洲航天局以来,他一直试图温和地抵制‘残奥会宇航员’这一广泛使用的头衔。
根据第二段中的“After losing his right leg at the age of 19 in a motorcycle accident, McFall went on to become a Paralympic athlete, winning bronze in Beijing, and later becoming a surgeon.(19岁时,在一次摩托车事故中失去右腿后,McFall成为了一名残奥会运动员,在北京获得了铜牌,后来成为了一名外科医生。)”和第三段中的“So far, all signs have suggested that space flight is feasible for McFall, giving hope that he — or someone with a similar disability — could eventually train for an upcoming mission.(到目前为止,所有的迹象都表明,太空飞行对McFall来说是可行的,这给了他希望,即他或一个有类似残疾的人最终可以为即将到来的任务进行训练。)”
D. It results from “pluralistic ignorance” to some degree.
30. What does the underlined word “antidote” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Devotion. B. Introduction. C. Solution. D. Resistance.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Don’t Be a Bystander B. Stay away from Emergencies
C. Raise Awareness of First Aid D. Don’t Intervene in “Bystander Effect”
D 29. D 30. C 31. A
根据第一段中“But sometimes we behave in ways we wouldn’t expect when encountering a situation we are unsure about. Research from the British Heart Foundation has suggested that a third of people would not perform first aid if they saw someone collapse on the street, with some even admitting they wouldn’t call an ambulance. (但有时,当我们遇到不确定的情况时,我们的行为方式会出乎我们的意料。英国心脏基金会的研究表明,如果看到有人在街上晕倒,三分之一的人不会进行急救,有些人甚至承认他们不会叫救护车。)”可知,有些人在他人需要帮助时会表现出犹豫,不确定是否要采取帮助行动,比如进行急救或叫救护车等,即,有些人会犹豫是否干预。故选D项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“There are various factors contributing to this effect — people think that others will get involved or intervene. Afterwards people often say they did not feel qualified or senior or important enough to be the one to intervene. It is also partly down to “pluralistic ignorance” — since everyone is not reacting to the emergency, they don’t need to either; it’s not serious because no one else is doing anything.
根据最后一段“Self-awareness is the best antidote to it.
根据第二段中“This has been termed the “bystander effect”—a well-known psychological phenomenon that individuals are less likely to offer help to someone when other people are present. The more people there are, the less likely they are to help. (这被称为“旁观者效应”——一种众所周知的心理现象,当其他人在场时,个人不太可能向某人提供帮助。人越多,他们提供帮助的可能性就越小。)”及最后一段中“If you’d run for help, do it. If that’s how you would have behaved when you were on your own then that’s probably the right course of action.
32. What effect does heat have on food production according to the passage?
C 33. A 34. D 35. B
由文章第二段中“Crops need a norm (常态); any changes or disturbance to cycles will lead to negative impacts. Some crops simply won’t grow in certain areas any more. Drought affects the quality of the soil, the minerals, and the productivity of the plant. (作物需要有一个常态;任何变化或周期的干扰都会导致负面影响。有些作物在某些地区根本无法再生长。干旱会影响土壤质量、矿物质和植物生产力。)”可知,由于高温,某些作物已无法再适应某些地区的生长条件。故选C。
【33题详解】
主旨大意题。由文章第四段“Heat impacts are not only limited to food production. (热效应不仅限于粮食生产。产量减少和种植区的变化可能导致肥料和水的更多使用,以及生物多样性的进一步丧失。家畜同样容易受到热应激的影响,这对饲养用于肉类和奶制品的牲畜产生连锁反应。与此同时,渔业和水产养殖业也面临着水温升高和酸化的问题。)”可知,本段主要讲述热效应对除粮食生产外其他方面的广泛影响,即热效应的进一步的影响。故选A。
由文章最后一段中“The key message, argues Ould-Dada, is for farmers to exchange best practice and diversify: if one crop falls to heat, another may grow. (Ould-Dada认为,关键信息是农民应该分享最佳实践并多样化种植:如果一种作物因热而受损,另一种作物可能还能生长。)”可知,应对热效应的关键在于农民之间分享方法和多样化种植。故选D。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。由文章最后一段中“Besides, Farmers could be creative, for example, by installing solar panels in fields; plants benefit from shade and the panels generate electricity and gather rainwater. “Food production itself will cause the emission of CO. We have to do this in a way that benefits nature, the livelihoods of farmers and local communities,” adds Ould-Dada.
Besides, try not to rub your eyes. Rubbing makes inflammation (炎症) and leads to infections. The more you rub, the itchier your eyes will get.
____40____ Not all eye problems are noticeable, and all are best treated when found early. For most people, unless there are problems, that means having your eyes tested every one to two years.
A. Get rid of smoking
B. Stop some bad habits
C. Finally, don’t forget to see an eye specialist for a checkup regularly.
D. Gardening, home repairs and sports can also pose risks to your eyes.
E. We asked experts what lifestyle steps can be taken to protect our vision.
F. One good way to prevent that is drinking four or five glasses of water a day.
G. To protect eyes, wear sunglasses that can block out 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB light.
E 37. D 38. F 39. B 40. C

根据下文“First, the obvious: smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs, but it can harm eyes and cause dry eyes. It also increases the risk of cataracts and can harm the eye nerve. Besides, try not to rub your eyes. Rubbing makes inflammation (炎症) and leads to infections. The more you rub, the itchier your eyes will get.
根据下文“Not all eye problems are noticeable, and all are best treated when found early. (并非所有的眼部问题都很明显,所有问题最好在早期发现时得到治疗。)”可知,要定期检查眼睛,与C项“Finally, don’t forget to see an eye specialist for a checkup regularly. (最后,不要忘记定期去看眼科专家进行检查。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选C项。

67. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

Paragraph 2: Then, just as it seemed as if I would sink into the sea, I heard a loud voice.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Frightened, I tried to resurface from the water. I spared no effort to resurface. However, it didn’t work. The storm was so huge that I couldn’t pull myself out of the water. After a while, I felt rather tired and out of breath. I almost gave up, thought I would lose my life in the sea and also felt regret that I didn’t listen to what the old man told me before. I felt deeper and deeper into the wave.
Paragraph 2:
Then, just as it seemed as if I would sink into the sea, I heard a loud voice. It was the old man who was rowing his boat to me. And he shouted as loudly as possible, so I could hear him. Then I screamed to him and waved my hand quickly. I was saved at last. How lucky I was. I was saved by the old man. When I was pulled onto the boat, I lay there, gasping for breath and unable to speak for a few minutes. My friends rushed to my side, their faces filled with relief and worry.
