ChatGPT to education: good or bad?
Recently, the AI chatbot (聊天机器人) ChatGPT has become a hot topic. Many people, with the experience of communicating with it, would be deeply attracted (吸引) by the robot. However, when it comes to education, some people hold different opinions about whether ChatGPT is offering help or making things worse.
In my opinion, ChatGPT has helped me in many ways, from giving cooking tips to writing emails, but I’ve never tried to use it in my education. I do agree that it can collect enough information for us, but we sometimes are not sure whether the information is correct. Also, depending on it to do our homework will just make us stop thinking.
AI chatbots like ChatGPT can provide 24/7 support and immediate feedback (及时回馈). In addition, by solving repetitive tasks, AI chatbots can free up students, time to help them work on higher-value work. So I think the best way is to show them how to use ChatGPT, rather than just banning (禁止) it or seeing it as an easy way to copy homework.
I think ChatGPT is terrible for education. This is because it’s powerful enough to allow lazy and hardworking people to achieve the same level of excellence with the same level of education. This makes students who should work hard become lazy.
Whether ChatGPT is good or bad for education, I think it all depends on how students use it. If students use it to help them better understand certain topics that teachers may not explain in detail in class, I think it can really help their learning. However, if ChatGPT is simply used for homework or cheating on exams, I think it will do no good.
16. According to the text, who are against the use of ChatGPT in education?
A. Bonnie and Frank. B. Bonnie and Grace.
C. Frank and Grace. D. Grace and Brain.
17. In which part of magazine can we read this passage?
A. Art. B. People. C. Health. D. Education.
18. The writer wrote this passage is to ________.
A. tell us how many people are attracted by AI B. encourage us to use ChatGPT
C. call on us to ban ChatGPT in education D. show us different opinions about ChatGPT

①When I was in fourth grade, we would have reading circles. The other kids and I would sit in a circle and read aloud different parts of books. Then the teacher would ask us questions. I loved to answer those questions. I was an advanced (先进的) reader and a very fast reader. That meant that whenever the teacher would start asking us questions, my voice would be the first to call out the answers.
②This went on for a while, and everybody was pretty patient with me. Little did I realize, though, that the teacher was getting tired of my behavior (行为). Because I was not able to sit there and go with the other students, one day she put me in the corner, out of the circle.
③Did this stop me? I am afraid not. I was simply excited about what I had read. From the corner of the room, I kept on listening and reading—reading away. When the teacher would ask questions, I would still shout out the answers—but from across the room.
④After I’d done this a few times, the teacher became angry. She decided to schedule a meeting with my parents.
⑤The next day, my mother came to school for the meeting. She reminded the teacher that I was just trying to be a good student and that I needed to be challenged more. However, it was also made clear to me that there were other students in the class and they need a chance to talk, too.
⑥In the end, we worked out a solution. I would sit in the circle with the other students, but I would be given more advanced books to read. After the reading circle was over, the teacher would spend time talking with me about what I had read.
⑦And so, although I am embarrassed, I learned a lesson from it.

A. She was in grade five at that time. B. She was always quiet in class.

a The teacher scheduled a meeting with my mother.
b. I sat in a circle and was always the first to call out the answers.
c. The teacher got tired of my behavior.

Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: music boosts certain language abilities in the brain. Here, we look at two examples.
Music and Hearing
A recent study by researcher Nina Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument (乐器) can improve a person’s hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.
Musicians hear better, says Kraus, because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. Think about violinists in an orchestra (管弦乐队). When the violinists play in a group, they hear their own instruments and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and ignore (忽视) the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to pay attention to certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.

Gottfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical. School, works with stroke patients (中风患者). Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. Why does this work? Music seems to activate (使运作) different parts of the brain, including the damaged (被损坏) parts. This somehow helps patients to use that part of the brain again.
Understanding the Results
Music improves concentration (专注), memory, listening skills, speaking skills and our overall language abilities. It can even help sick people get better. Playing an instrument or singing, says Nina Kraus, can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp (敏锐的) as we get older. Music, she adds, is not only enjoyable, it is also good for us in many other ways.
23. The underlined word “boosts” in Paragraph 1 means ________.
A. hurts B. improves C. has D. needs
24. Which one is the best to fill in the blank “________”?
A. Music and Speaking B. Music and Reading
C. Music and Writing D. Music and Memorizing
25. What is true about both Nina Kraus and Gottfried Schlaug?
A. They are both medical doctors.
B. They both work at Harvard Medical school.
C. They both play an instrument in an orchestra.
D. They both find music has something to do the brain.
26. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Only those with better hearing can be musicians.
B. Music can cure (治愈) stroke patients.
C. Music is good for our language abilities.
D. Music brings us joy and happiness.

①“Hey, want to do something great with old soft drink cans?” “Sure, let’s use them to go to the moon!”
②I know that sounds crazy. After all, you can’t build an Apollo rocket from old soda cans. However, if you recycle enough cans, you can save as much energy as there is inside a real Apollo rocket. Enough power to reach the Moon!
③Soft drink cans are made of aluminum (铝). Making this metal requires a lot of energy. Aluminum begins as bauxite ore (铝土矿). The ore must be extracted (采掘), crushed (粉碎), and smelted (炼取). Producing soft drink cans needs about 1% of all the electricity used in the USA. Americans use more than 100 billion soft drink cans every year!
④Can we do better? Yes, we can, by recycling. While it takes lots of energy to produce new aluminum, it takes very little energy to turn old aluminum into new products: The metal is simply shredded (撕碎), melted (融化) and recast (再铸) into blocks (大块). By recycling, we can produce 20 soft drink cans using the same energy it would take to make just 1 new can.
⑤Nationwide (在全国), about 100, 000 cans get recycled every minute. To be exact, in 90 minutes, the energy saved by recycling is: E gained by recycling-2000,000 joules (焦耳, 能量单位)*9000,000cans=18 trillion.
⑥That’s a lot of energy. What can we do with that much energy? Can we reach the moon? It does sound crazy. But do you know how much energy do we need to send a rocket to the moon? 15.7 trillion.
⑦Now, compare two values for energy. See? The energy saved by recycling old soft drink cans is more than enough energy to send a rocket to the Moon. And we didn’t even need a whole year of nationwide recycling—just 90 minutes of recycling did it!
⑧Isn’t it a fascinating way to think about recycling? Yet each time you save an empty soft drink can it’s almost like you’re helping to send a racket.
27. The writer leads into the topic by ________.
A. listing some numbers B. asking a question
C. offering an answer D. making a conversation
28. Paragraph④mainly tells us ________.
A. it is difficult to make soda cans from old aluminum
B. it is easy to make soda cans from old aluminum
C. to make soda cans from old aluminum, we need much more energy
D. to make soda cans from old aluminum, we can save much energy
29. When comparing the two values for energy, which of the following is right?
A. Energy saved by recycling>Energy needed to send a rocket.
B. Energy saved by recycling<Energy needed to send a rocket.
C. Energy saved by recycling≥Energy needed to send a rocket.
D. Energy saved by recycling=Energy needed to send a rocket.
30. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A. Save energy from cans B. Make soda cans from ore
C. Build a rocket to the moon D. Drink soda in the moon

四、任务型阅读(共5小题, 每小题2分, 满分10分)
下面文章中有四处需要添加小标题。请从以下A、B、C、D四个选项中选出符合意思的标题, 并完成第5小题。
Hug a tree
We know that spending time in nature reduces stress and improves our mood. We also know that the act of hugging ourselves or another living thing can improve our well-being. So, why not try to mix the two together? That’s exactly what hugging a tree does! Read on to learn more about the benefits (益处) of hugging a tree!
46
It is well known that trees produce oxygen (氧气). So, when you are close to a tree and hug it in a forest, you are naturally in a more oxygen-rich environment. You are also more likely to be breathing in fewer pollutants (污染物).
47
One study found that when we experience nature—whether by hiking in nearby mountains or simply looking at trees and birds on the way to work—we can increase our heart rate variability (可变性). This can lower the risks of many heart-related diseases.
48
Trees’ positive effects on our mental health have been well documented. Feeling grounded or connected to nature can reduce anxiety and depression (抑郁). When you hug a tree, you become grounded to its powerful roots, receiving energy that can help to fight seasonal depression.
49
Trees are one of nature’s greatest stress-reducers. When you hug a tree, you receive grounding energy through its roots. This has proven effective for people who have high levels of anxiety or fear, or those who suffer from nervousness and worry.
If you don’t have a tree in your yard, visit the local park or the botanic gardens or hike in the closest woodlands. Find a tree that speaks to you or is impressive in its appearance. Go, give it a hug.
