内容正文:

Unit 12 Reading and Writing A April Fool’s Day is a yearly celebration in some European and Western countries by playing jokes and spreading hoaxes. Even some newspapers, TV programs and radio stations report fake(假的) stories. In 1989, on the show Grandstand, a fight started between members of staff while Des Lynam was talking about his professional team. In the end, Des Lynam, the reporter for the sports show, announced that it was an April Fool’s joke. WIXE is a radio station. In 2009, the news reporter Bob Rogers said he was going to change his show (country music) to heavy metal, a kind of rock music. Hearing this, a lot of listeners made phone calls to the radio station, asking for a song. In 1993, a radio station in San Diego City told listeners that the US space shuttle would be landing at a small local airport very soon. Over 1,000 people drove there in the morning rush hour. As a result, the police had to be called in to deal with traffic problems. However, the shuttle didn’t land at all. In 1998, two reporters for WAAF, a radio station, said Boston mayor(市长) Thomas Menino had been killed in a car accident. Menino was just flying then. The "news" spread quickly across the city, causing the two to lose their jobs. 1. What kind of show was Grandstand? A. A talk show B. A sports show. C. A talent show D. A comedy show. 2. What kind of music did the listeners of WIXE ask for? A. Pop music. B. Rock music. C. Country music. D. Folk music. 3. Where was the mayor of Boston when the "news" about his death was reported? A. In a taxi. B. In a car. C. On a train. D. On a plane. B Life is full of surprises and the unexpected turns just like a roller coaster (过山车). What is the best we can do to do with them? John and Jimmy are workers in an IT company (公司). One morning, John and Jimmy were both caught in traffic on the way to work. They both had to attend an important meeting. John got unhappy and started thinking angrily. “Why is this traffic so terrible now?”“ It is already 10 minutes but I am still caught here...” On the other hand, Jimmy was irritated by the heavy traffic too, but he started listening to his favorite songs on his phone. Both of them showed up late. After they entered the office, John started talking about the heavy traffic. As a result, John couldn’t complete his work in the best way he could, while Jimmy seemed to be more relaxed and did a good job at the meeting. I am sure you also have met similar things in your life. Here are suggestions. First, accept that unexpected things can happen anytime. Nobody could avoid unexpected events in life. Second, prepare yourself for the unexpected. For example, to avoid forgetting keys, keep them in a safe place. We may not be able to prepare for all the facts that might happen, so be mentally (心理上的) ready. Third, never take action at once. Take a deep breath or two and think about “How” to solve the problem rather than “Why”. Last, believe that something good will happen. Sometimes we just need to go through experiences. Don’t lose heart and keep going. 4. How does the writer start the passage? A. By asking a question. B. By listing some numbers. C. By offering a suggestion. D. By telling a story. 5. What do the underlined words “was irritated by” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Was careful about. B. Was strict with. C. Was angry about. D. Was patient with. 6 .Which of the following best shows the structure (结构) of the passage? A. B. C. D. 7. Why is the passage written? A. To describe some unexpected events. B. To compare people’s feelings on unexpected events. C. To explain why unexpected events happen. D. To show us how to deal with unexpected events. C I’ll always remember the first time I tried ballet (芭蕾). My mother was a dancer and I wanted to be like her, but after making many mistakes during my first class, I felt like I wanted to give up right away. As it was only my first day, I told my mom I couldn’t wait to dance again. Several weeks passed and my dancing didn’t get any better. Then my dance teacher told us that we were going to perform in a show. I was afraid of falling on my face in front of hundreds of people and making my mom sad. I practiced hard for the show, but I still didn’t get the hang of it. Finally, I went to my mom to tell her how I felt. She just laughed and told me she would help me. My mom quickly found out how bad at ballet I was, but she still taught me with the greatest patience, love and understanding. When I jumped and fell, she was there to catch me. When I lost my balance (平衡), she held me up. By the time the show arrived, I was as prepared as I could be. The music began and my heart started to beat quickly. Breathing calmly, I began moving to the music without missing a step. When the music stopped, I ran off the stage and laughed with excitement. My mom found me and gave me a huge hug, telling me how proud she was. I looked my mom in the eye and told her that there was no way this could have happened without her. Through this, I knew one important fact: My mom will always be there to catch me if I fall. 8. What happened to the writer on her first day of trying ballet? A. She fell down and hurt herself. B. She made no mistakes while dancing. C. She realized she was good at ballet. D. She lied to her mom about liking ballet. 9. Afraid—surprised—excited—proud. D. Excited—prepared—calm—surprised. 10. What did the writer learn from her ballet experience? A. Don’t be afraid of making others sad. B. Never try something you are not good at. C. Her mom would always support her. D. Every mom will be proud of their children. 11. The best title for the passage is "________". A. Always Be There If You Fall Down B. Practice Makes Perfect C. My First Day with Ballet D.
