Can you swim? Are you afraid of swimming? 1. For years, swimming was one of those things where I thought: "I'm not good at it, and I never will be." That thought lingered there most of my childhood. 2. This all changed last year when the company I worked for announced that they were going to arrange a swimrun, a race where you partially swim and partially run to finish the race. Of course, it was a voluntary activity and I was not going to participate. 背景: 不会游泳 不自信 ①I could't swim and I was not confident. 契机:公司安排一场游泳比赛,我不想参加 ②I didn’t want to participate in the swimrun. 3. However, as the weeks progressed, I started thinking to myself. "What would it feel like to break through my comfort zone and finally face my insecurity?" To help the swimrun participants prepare for the race, the company arranged an opportunity to learn how to swim freestyle with a swim instructor. I ultimately decided to at least participate in the first swimming lesson. 挑战:想要打破舒适区,面对不安,决定学习第一节课 ③I wanted to break through my comfort zone and face my insecurity, so I decide to take a swimming lesson. ④I was mentally prepared to be the worst student during the lesson. However, as it turned out, I had plenty of co-workers that were equally bad at swimming. After a few swimming lessons, I even got compliments for how quickly I managed to improve. Not only had I shattered my old belief about my disability in water, but something else had started to stir. I had gotten a taste for swimming and was curious to see where it could lead me. “How would it feel like to be completely comfortable in the water?” I wondered(伏笔). 转变:同事也不会游泳;我取得进步;自信大增想要完全自在 ④I did well in lessons and became confident. 5.I started going to the public bathhouse to practice the few tips I had gotten from the swimming instructor. I’d watch YouTube videos and try and mimic the movements by myself in the water to the best of my abilities. 决心:开始刻苦练习 ⑤I practiced wimming by myself. 6.Without a doubt — in the beginning, I looked like a drowning monkey. I would swim; I would sink, coughing up water, and repeat it all over again. I’d get yelled at for swimming too slow at the freestyle range. However, I focused on the process and the soon-to-be new skillset that I did not get discouraged by the slow progress nor the occasional scolding. 专注:不被挫折打倒 ⑥I didn’t get discouraged. Paragraph 1: The thoughts of gliding through water effortlessly was what kept me going. Paragraph 2: Regarding the swimrun, I eventually decided to participate. 1. The thoughts of gliding through water effortlessly was what kept me going. ①Therefore, I decided to continue to take swimming lessons and devote myself entirely to every exercise. ②I imagined myself swimming in the water like a true swimmer, and each stroke(划水) became a little smoother and easier. ③After each lesson, I would swim; I would sink, coughing up water, and repeat it all over again. ④Under the swim instructor’s guidance, I was not that drowning monkey, but I could swim better and better. ⑤What surprised me was that I was no longer afraid of swimming and failure.⑥My arms were getting stronger, my breath was getting steadier, and my speed was getting faster and faster. ⑦Though my swimming skill was not perfect, I gradually found my love for swimming and a sense of joy flooded over me. 或者a sense of accomplishment welled up in my mind. Regarding the swimrun, I eventually decided to participate.①On the day of the race, I stood among my co-workers at the starting line, a wave of excitement and nervousness crushed into my mind.②The race began when the whistle blew, I took a deep breath and dived in the water, using all skills that I learned to push me forward. ③About halfway of the race, a sharp pain seized my leg, making each kick(踢腿) difficult. ④So painful was I that I wanted to give up, but I didn’t. ⑤Tired and satisfied, I finally crossed the finish line out of breath. ⑥I felt an overwhelming surge of pride and accomplishment when I looked back at the pool. ⑦I realized that every practice was worth, and I had conquered more than a race—I had broken through my comfort zone and faced my insecurity. ⑧At that moment, I knew “it is never too late to learn, each person has the right to accept more challenges and make more attempts.”
