The months passed and winter came. The weather got cold. One morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school, I saw some footprints outside the widow’s house. There was a cross on the heel (脚后跟) of the left one. My heart jumped. Only one person wore boots with a cross on the left head! Pap!
“He’s heard about my money,” I thought. “And he wants it!”
That night I went to see Jim. Jim had a magic ball made of animal hair. There was a spirit (精灵) inside the ball that could answer people’s questions about the future.

—Cats!
—Dogs!
These can be fighting words, depending on (取决于) who you’re talking to.
Clearly, there are dog people and there are cat people. Dog people like dogs better and think they are man’s “best friend”, while cat people like cats because of their elegance (优雅) and independence (独立). Sometimes the two group even argue with each other, trying to prove that their side is the best.
Dogs seem to be winning the battle. An Associated Press poll (民意调查) in 2018 showed that people in the US like dogs more than cats. As much as 74 percent said they liked dogs “a lot” but only 41 percent said the same thing about cats. The 2018 White Paper on China’s Pet Industry also showed that there are around 11 million more dog owners than cat owners in Chinese cities.
However, cats seem to get more notice online. There are even some new slang terms to refer to them. Cats are described as “masters” (喵主子) online, while the dog owners are servants who clean their masters’ feces (铲屎官). Even those who don’t have pet cats are doing something called “cloud cat petting” (云吸猫), which refers to viewing pictures and videos of cats online.
An article in The Guardian pointed out that dog owners usually go outside to play with their pets or their neighbors’ dogs. But since cats are mainly indoor animals, the Internet has become a virtual (虚拟的) cat park for cat owners.
But it doesn’t really matter whether you like cats or dogs. Having a connection (联系) with any animal can make us feel good.
1.What are dogs like in dog people’s eyes?
2.Which group of people describe their pets as masters?
3.Why do cats seem more popular than dogs on the Internet?
4.Why do people have a connection with animals?
5.According to the article, are you more likely a dog person or a cat person? Why? (不限字数)
【答案】1.(They are) man’s “best friend”. 2.The cat owners. 3.Because cats are mainly indoor animals. 4.Because it makes us feel good. 5.I like dogs better because I think they are my friends, when I feel sad, they can play with me. (答案合理即可)

Two weeks after getting out of the caves, the judge told Tom, “Nobody will get lost in those caves again. I’ve closed the caves with big metal doors and three locks.”
Tom turned as white as a piece of paper. “Oh, Judge, Indian Joe’s in the caves!” As a result, Indian Joe lay dead on the floor. Tom finally felt safe.
The next day Tom and Huck talked about the money they had seen. Huck said someone else must have taken it from Indian Joe’s room in the tavern.
“Huck, I bet the money’s in the caves! Will you go there with me and get it out?”
“I will if we get in and don’t get lost.”
“That’s no problem. Just through the entrance that only I know about, we can get into the caves.”
So boys started their treasure hunt adventure. They went down the river, entered the secret hole and crawled to the far end of the tunnel. They tied their string to a rock and moved on. They soon got to the place where Tom saw Indian Joe that night. The boys went carefully over to the place. They found a small bed of blankets by a large rock but there was no money-box.
“Look, Huck. There’re footprints and some candle wax on this side of the rock, but not on the other sides. I’m sure the money is under the rock. I’m going to dig.”
Tom took out his knife, started digging and hit wood. He lifted the piece of wood and found a large hole. So they climbed inside it and found the treasure box, about $12,000, which were shared by them both.

When Xiong Chuanfa, 34, blows a lifelike tiger out of sugar in just minutes, kids look at him in surprise thinking he is a magician.
Xiong has been blowing sugar figurines (吹糖人) for over twenty years. Blowing sugar figurines is a Chinese traditional folk (民间) art with a history of over 600 years.
Every morning, Xiong prepares the sugar and drives to different markets in Nanchang to start his magic show. He heats (加热) the sugar, pulls off a little to make a ball and blows it into different shapes—a rabbit, a monkey, and even Bing Dwen Dwen.
People, especially little kids, are interested in his skills. To draw young people closer to the art, he also stops by colleges. Many college students have been drawn to the art, waiting in line for hands-on experience. Among them, Simon, a foreign student, couldn’t help having a try. Though it looked easy, he felt that it was difficult to make sugar figurines. Thanks to Xiong’s help. Simon finally saw a horse slowly taking shape.
Simon was deeply moved after learning about the art. “I just can’t believe the traditional folk art can be kept so well here. I love it. Chinese culture should be spread around the world,” he said.

Feeling shy around your new friends? Playing some icebreaking games can help you get to know each other better. Give it a try!
Describe Yourself
The first player should use one word to describe himself or herself. The first letter of this word should be the same as the first letter in his or her name. A large rose-tree stood near the entrance of the garden; the roses growing on it were white, but there were three gardeners at it, busily painting them red. Suddenly their eyes happened to fall upon Alice, as she stood watching them. “Would you tell me, please,” said Alice, a little timidly, “why you are painting those roses?”
Five and Seven said nothing, but looked at Two. Two began, in a low voice, “Why, the fact is, you see, Miss, this here should have been a red rose-tree, and we put a white one in by mistake; and, if the Queen was to find it out, we should all have our heads cut off, you know. So you see, Miss, we’re doing our best, before she comes, to—” At this moment, Five, who had been anxiously looking across the garden, called out, “The Queen! Most of you may think of clams (河蚌) as part of a big meal. But these little things can do an important job: testing the cleanness of water, including people’s drinking water.
The main water station in Warsaw, Poland, offers water to millions of people there. It uses eight clams to help test the water every day, reported The Economist.
Clams are very sensitive (able to find very small changes quickly) to water pollution. If the water is not clean enough, the clams will close their shells (壳). People in the water station connect (连接) their shells to a computer system (系统). When four or more clams close their shells at the same time, the workers can get a tip from the computer quickly.
To make sure the clams are always sensitive to the environment, the workers choose some new ones to work for them every three months. “This works well and it helps protect people’s drinking water,” the water station said.

Shout out
If you smell smoke or see fire, shout out “fire”! Shout as loudly as you can to wake people up.
Call 119
Never try to put out a fire by yourself, even if it is a very small one! Get help from your parents or call 119.

Check the door before you open it. Touch it with the back of your hand. If the door is cool, open it carefully. If the door is hot, do not open it.

(23-24八年级上·江苏南通·期末)The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. In China, people created the 24 solar terms thousands of years ago to guide agricultural (农业的) production.
Rain Water is one of the 24 solar terms which stands for the increase (增加) in rainfall and rise in temperature. With its arrival, the river water melts, wild geese fly from south to north, and trees and grass turn green again.
Here are several things you may not know but can make you know about Rain Water better. Let me introduce them to you.
Rain in spring is as precious (宝贵的) as oil
According to an old Chinese saying, the rainfall in spring is as precious as oil. In northern China the spring drought (旱灾) is common. And the rain of this season is only 10 to 15 percent of yearly average (平均) rainfall. So at that time, rain is so precious and important to the crops.
Return of a cold period
A returning cold in the late spring often happens during Rain Water. The fast increase in air humidity (湿度) can result in lower temperature and wet weather. Remember not to take off your coats so early in this period.
Visit to in-laws (姻亲)
One of the main customs during Rain Water is sons-in-law visiting their in-laws and giving gifts. According to the tradition, gifts are usually two cane chairs with four meters of red belt. They stand for good health and long life. Another traditional gift is a pot of cooked pig’s knuckles (蹄). The son-in-law expresses his thankfulness this way.

Huck is my name, Huckleberry Finn. The story started when my best friend, Tom Sawyer and I found $12,000 in a cave. That money made us rich. We got $6,000 each. Judge Thatcher, an important man in St. Petersburg, put it in the bank, and now we get a dollar a day interest (利息).
Then a kind old lady called Widow Douglas invited me to live with her because I didn’t have a family or a home. My mother died a long time ago, then my dad, Pap, disappeared. He was a violent (狂暴的) man especially when he drank a lot, which was most of the time, and he often beat me. I was afraid of him. I didn’t go to school like the other boys of my age. I lived on the streets and in the woods.
My life changed after I lived with the widow (寡妇). She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table. But then her sister Miss Watson arrived. She brought her black slave (奴隶) Jim with her. I liked Jim but I didn’t like Miss Watson very much. She was very strict (严格的).
Widow Douglas sent me to school every day. I didn’t like going there at first because learning was very difficult. But when I could read and write a bit, I didn’t mind going.

Why? (不限字数)

Now Widow Douglas gave Huck a home though Huck wasn’t used to the comfortable but regular life. However, to be a member of Tom Sawyer’s Gang, Huck decided to try the new life again.

Eleven children from Nanning, a city in southern China, went on a trip to Harbin, the famous ice city in Heilongjiang province. People online called them “little tangerines (小砂糖桔)” because they wore orange jackets.
People on social media talked about these children every day. Everywhere they went, the local people treated them with love and kindness. In Harbin, they tried local food and watched fireworks in the snow. They even went to an outpost (前哨) in Mohe, the northernmost place of China. There, they sang the national anthem (国歌). The police officers also made snow sculptures (雕塑) and snowmen for the children.
The parents of these children are thankful for the support they have received from people online and friends in Northeast China. The parents chose orange jackets for safety reasons, and the care from local people and people online made them feel warm. To thank Heilongjiang, tangerines from Guangxi were sent to the province as a gift.
During the three-day New Year holiday, Harbin welcomed over 3 million visitors and earned (挣) 5.9 billion yuan ($830 million) from tourism.

Yeshe Dolkar still remembers the moment she saw snow leopards at Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve a year ago. On that cold snowy day, the 15-year-old Yeshe Dolkar living in Nangqen County, Qinghai was heading down a mountaintop with her family. Suddenly, they saw two snow leopards near the headwaters of the Lancang River. “They have blue-green eyes and long tails. The fur is gray-white with black spots all over the body. “They look so cool!” said Yeshe Dolkar.
Since the mid-20th century, the area of snow, grasslands and lakes in Sanjiangyuan has become smaller because of climate change and human activities. Many wild animals living in the area are in danger of extinction (灭绝).
On Jan 24, 2003, China set up Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve to better protect the area and the wildlife there.
Last year was the 20th anniversary of the setup of the reserve. In these years, the population (种群) of wild animals has been rising. More than 70,000 Tibetan antelopes now live there. And more than 1,000 snow leopards can be found in the area.
Local people have improved (提高) their understanding about environmental protection and have tried hard to look after the environment in Sanjiangyuan over the years. They used to carry food with them in plastic bags and left the bags behind. But now things have changed. According to Palden Wangchuk, a 22-year-old young man, local people are regularly called on to pick up waste (废物) on the grasslands. “People would also take their food waste down the mountains. The grasslands have put on a new look,” he said.

Mark: We saw the news about the bushfires. Are they close to you?
Jim: Yes. They are very close. The weather is hot and windy. The conditions are ideal for bushfires and once they get started they spread quickly. Yesterday the temperatures hit 44°C and there were reports of over 50 fires in the area. It will take days to put them out.
Mark: Have you seen any fires?
Jim: Yes, I have. I’m staying with my uncle Ted. He’s a volunteer firefighter. He says the fires have killed a lot of animals, but no people. He says that the safest thing is to stay inside unless your house catches fire!

Fei was a hero in Chinese history. He was a famous man who lived during the Song Dynasty (960—1279). In 1125, the Jin army from the north invaded (侵略) the Song kingdom. Yue decided to fight the Jin. Before he set out, his mother asked him, “Right now the country is facing great difficulty. What do you plan to do?” “Serve the country with utmost loyalty (精忠报国),” Yue said.
That was what his mother hoped her son would do. She decided to tattoo (给……文身) these four words on his back to make him remember these words. His mother asked, “My child, tattoos are quite painful. Are you afraid?” Yue said, “Mother, a little needle (针) is nothing. If I was afraid of a needle, how could I face going to war on the front lines?”
Keeping these words in mind, Yue served the country by driving the Jin army away during his life. Sadly, Yue was framed (陷害) and killed. But Yue’s spirit was passed on in the future.
We need to pay respect to Yue Fei, but we also need to understand how much courage he took to serve the country, as well as how much he and his family sacrificed (牺牲). Jingzhong baoguo shouldn’t be only in words. We need to practice it in our life.
President Xi Jinping wrote in an article that his mother told him this story when he was very young. He has kept the words “jingzhong baoguo” in mind since then. “This is also my lifelong goal,” Xi wrote.

If you live in the United States, the law says you can’t have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, you can’t earn (赚) your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.
Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people’s yards. Lena, makes money by knitting (织) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors, and Riesa said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!
Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed (成功) in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it; however, when you make your own money, you don’t have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better in your hand than the twenty dollars you ask for.
1.When can kids have full-time jobs?
2.When can a 15-year-old kid work to earn money?
3.How does Riesa make money?
4.What skills can kids learn while earning money?

This art has been passed down for four generations (代) in Xiong’s family. His 6-year-old son often blows sugar balloons, just like what he used to do as a child.

Feeling shy around your new friends? Playing some icebreaking games can help you get to know each other better. Give it a try!
Describe Yourself
The first player should use one word to describe himself or herself. The first letter of this word should be the same as the first letter in his or her name. Henry, for example, can call himself “Happy Henry”. The next players should say their own name combination (组合) as well as the name combinations of all the players in front of them.
Ten Fingers
Players should hold up all ten fingers. One by one, they can say one fact about themselves. One could possibly say, for example, “I can swim.” The other players who can’t swim should then put down one finger. When a player puts down all ten fingers, he or she loses the game.
Who Am I?
Each player is randomly (随机地) given a card with someone else’s name on it. The card should be taped to the player’s forehead (额头). This way, the player can’t see whose name is written on it. This name becomes his or her new identity (身份). Players can ask others “yes or no” questions about themselves. For example, one may ask, “Do I have long hair?” Players should use the answers to guess who they are.
1.Why do people play the icebreaking games?
2.What should the second player do while playing “Describe Yourself”?
3.How can we tell if a player loses the game of “Ten Fingers”?
4.Where should the card be taped when playing “Who Am I”?
