If you've decided to read more, you're not alone. However, one of the challenges with books is making time to read them all. In a classic guide How to Read a Book, Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren provide a solution: Don't try to read all of them, because most of them aren't worth it. You can get the best ideas from most books simply by skimming them. Skimming also prepares you to learn more when you actually read the book.
There are two levels of Adler and Van Doren's method of skimming. One includes looking through contents (目录) and conclusions of each chapter and making notes of what you already know or whether this book has information you want to learn. The second is known as speed reading, which is basically reading through a book really fast, just to get a surface - level understanding of it.
In order to get knowledge quickly, people try their best to study and take use of skills, but the obsession with reading faster and learning more is not completely right. Reading two books doesn't make a person twice as learned as a person who reads one book twice (or even once, carefully).
Here's how you can really use skimming reading method.
Don't feel bad for skimming instead of reading. When you read for main idea that you can use to your work, you need to read documents(文件) for your work, or to improve your skills. Then there's no doubt that skimming will be quite useful. When you do find a book you quite like, don't try to rush through it to the end. Slow down and take notes. Reread certain parts you don't understand in detail. Connect the book's ideas with other ideas or experiences you have.
Skimming is simply a tool to support the overall reading experience. It helps you choose the right thing to read, learning is not about how many books you read, or even how fast you read. It's about what you get from each of those books.
21. What can we know from Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren?
A. Readers need to connect the book's ideas with theirs.
B. It's impossible to read all the books for most readers.
C. Skimming helps us to learn more when actually reading.
D. We can get the best ideas from books simply by skimming.
22. What does the underlined word “obsession” probably mean?
A. The idea which is wrong or untrue.
B. The state of being crazy about something.
C. The method that people use to solve problems.
D. The act of disagreeing with something strongly.
23. According to the passage, readers will ____ by skimming.
A. have the best reading experience
B. reread a book as fast as possible
C. feel sorry for reading part of the book
D. decide whether they need to read the whole book
24. When you find a favorite book, you had better____ ?
A. continue skiing it.
B. read it quickly to the end.
C. slow down and read carefully.
D. only read the parts you like.
25. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The opinions on skimming from different people.
B. The importance of reading books fast by skimming.
C. The methods of reading uninteresting books by skimming.
D. The suggestions of reading books effectively by skimming.

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals and other projects began to be built in my village.“Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,”my grandma replied. Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn't have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.
Thank those good men who have devoted themselves to the development of our countryside.
Nowadays, people work hard to live in a big city. However, we should not forget our hometowns where we are from.
26. What troubled the villagers most was that ____.
A.they had too much work.
B.it was not convenient to go up the hill.
C.they could only grow fruit trees.
D.there wasn't enough water in the orchard.
27. The good men came and offered help probably because of ____.
A. the villagers' suggestions.
B. the government's support.
C. a school's practical activity.
D .a company's engineering plan.
28. We can infer from the passage that ____.
A. the grandmother doesn't like to live in the city.
B. the village is a place of interest for tourists now.
C. there will be more fruit production in the village.
D. more people like to work in the countryside nowadays.
29. The underlined phrase “devoted themselves to” is closest in meaning to “____”x
A. prepared much for.
B. donated money to.
C. drawn public attention to.
D. put much effort into.
30. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. How is a village improved?
B. Who are the good men?
C. Why do people come back?
D. What does a hometown mean?

You are invited to a large party. Loud music is playing, and lots of people are dancing. Do you dance or talk to as many people as you can all night? Later, you cannot fall asleep—you want more conversation! 31 Perhaps you cannot wait to go home early and relax by yourself.
Which kind of these people sounds most like you? Person A, who tries to talk to everyone and stays late? Or Person B, who prefers to keep quiet and leaves early?
If you said Person A, you are probably more extroverted(性格外向的). If you said Person B, you are probably more introverted(性格内向的). Or perhaps you are Person C and fall somewhere in the middle. 32 And they are also commonly misused and misunderstood.
Introverts may be thought as quiet, shy and timid. Extroverts may be thought as bold, confident, loud and full of energy. Introverted and extroverted people may fit those descriptions. But these same descriptions do not define.
Introverts and extroverts use their brains differently, and they get their energy differently. Introversion is the state of being mostly concerned with one's own mental life. 33 People who consider themselves introverts may say they “need to be alone to charge their batteries”. 34 But such activities require time to prepare.
Extroverts may say, “I don't need time alone. I feel more relaxed about being around other people.”
Understanding these differences is necessary, especially in workplaces and social settings. For example, in a team project, 35 , while extroverts may want to brainstorm in a group setting immediately. By recognizing and respecting these preferences, teams can work more harmoniously and productively.
A. introverts may prefer to work independently(独立) on specific tasks before sharing their ideas.
B. But extroversion is the state of being mostly concerned with what is outside oneself.
C. Whether people are introverted or extroverted is not decided by their brains.
D. However, introverts may still live being social and going to parties.
E. Or do you prefer a quieter corner?
F. Introverted and extroverted people are two commonly used words to describe a person’s personality.

Every spring, the Spanish city of Seville becomes one of Europe's largest orange yards. There are about 50,000 orange trees on its streets and squares. Therefore, Seville has become a tourist place in Spain. However, these oranges also bring a lot of trouble to people's life.
People eat a few of them. In fact, the fruit usually gets in people's way. Those fallen oranges make the streets dirty with juice. The government has to hire(雇佣) people to collect them. In the past, a small number of oranges were made into juice. They were also used to make wine. Most of them, however, ended up as rubbish. Now,this is about to change.

The biogas will then be used to produce electricity. “It's not just about saving money,”said Benigno Lopez, The head of the government. “the oranges are problems for the city and we are creating added value from waste. ”

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me
to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to
halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was
short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced,
and later, canals and other projects began to be built in my village.“Who are they?” I asked. “They are good
men from our government,”my grandma replied. Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high
school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The
canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn't have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so
clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples.
She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy was made to encourage
more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.

You are invited to a large party. Loud music is playing, and lots of people are dancing. Do you dance or
talk to as many people as you can all night? Later, you cannot fall asleep—you want more conversation! 31
Perhaps you cannot wait to go home early and relax by yourself.
Which kind of these people sounds most like you? Person A, who tries to talk to everyone and stays late?
Or Person B, who prefers to keep quiet and leaves early?
If you said Person A, you are probably more extroverted(性格外向的 ). If you said Person B, you are
probably more introverted(性格内向的). Or perhaps you are Person C and fall somewhere in the middle. 32
And they are also commonly misused and misunderstood.
Introverts may be thought as quiet, shy and timid. Extroverts may be thought as bold, confident, loud and
full of energy. Introverted and extroverted people may fit those descriptions. But these same descriptions do not
define.
Introverts and extroverts use their brains differently, and they get their energy differently. Introversion is
the state of being mostly concerned with one's own mental life. 33 People who consider themselves
introverts may say they “need to be alone to charge their batteries”. 34 But such activities require time to
prepare.
Extroverts may say, “I don't need time alone. I feel more relaxed about being around other people.”
Understanding these differences is necessary, especially in workplaces and social settings. For example, in
a team project, 35 , while extroverts may want to brainstorm in a group setting immediately. By
recognizing and respecting these preferences, teams can work more harmoniously and productively.
A. introverts may prefer to work independently(独立 ) on specific tasks before sharing their
ideas.
B. But extroversion is the state of being mostly concerned with what is outside oneself.
C. Whether people are introverted or extroverted is not decided by their brains.
D. However, introverts may still live being social and going to parties.

about saving money,”said Benigno Lopez, The head of the government. “the oranges are problems for the city
and we are creating added value from waste. ”

which is enough to meet the needs of 5 homes per day. At its first try, it can power 150 homes in total. there
