“Taoli”, “kaimo”, what do these Chinese titles mean? Have you ever wondered what the stories behind these ideas are?
●Keeping modest (谦虚的)
Chinese people in the past or even sometimes today call their sons quanzi. They believe that dogs are humble (卑微的) animals. When Chinese parents use quanzi to refer to their sons, they are being modest. Of course, most parents do have high expectations for their children and want them to be successful.
Although people are modest about themselves, they call others’ sons linglang to be polite.
●Trees of character
In Chinese, kaimo means “role model”. Both of these Chinese characters have a “木” on their left side. This means kai and mo might have been two kinds of trees.
It was said that there were once kai trees growing near Confucius’ tomb (墓) and mo trees near the tomb of the Duke of Zhou. Their trunks were very straight, just like their character-straight and upright. Kaimo was then used to refer to role models.
●Spreading seeds (种子) of education
There is a Chinese saying taoli mantianxia, which comes from a story about Zizhi. He was a kind and wise teacher. He often pointed at a peach and a plum tree and asked his students to work hard, “You should become a useful person, just like when the peach and plum produce fruit,” Keeping these words in their minds, many of Zizhi’s students achieved great things along the way and planted peach and plum trees to show their respect (尊敬) for their teacher.
16. Chinese parents sometimes call their sons quanzi because they ________.
A. expect their sons to be politer B. want to bring their sons good luck
C. try to be modest in front of others D. are always proud of their sons
17. According to the passage, “peach and plum trees” refer to (指) ________.
A. trees that produce lots of fruit B. fruit that tastes more delicious
C. teachers who have many students D. students who have been successful
18. From the passage, we can learn ________.
A. Zizhi educated his students to be helpful to the society
B. people regarded kai and mo trees as old people
C. people today often call their sons linglang to be strict
D. behind quanzi, kaimo and taoli lies the value of heros

Like many kids, last summer I learned to ride a bike. Only I am in my 30s. When I was a child, I had no one to teach me. Both of my parents made a living in a big city.
When my brother and I were made fun of because we were the only kids past 6 years old who still depended on training wheels, my grandfather took them away, but in doing that, I lost interest and trust in the activity. I was so scared—I was quite tall for my age at 7 and I was worried I’d fall off. I thought I was too old to learn too.
Not knowing how to ride didn’t bring me any trouble at first, until we moved to the suburbs, where bicycles were popular. On trips to the convenience store to buy candy with my friends, I was always the last to arrive, on foot. By then, I was 12 years old.
In my early 30s, I remember feeling envious (嫉妒) as I watched children as young as 3 learn to ride bikes. Among them were my neighbors whom I would sometimes take care of. Then something changed. The fear within was still there, but something much stronger was taking over.
I decided to join a women’s bike-riding organization. There, I stood in a park, decided to overcome my fear. Meeting women from different backgrounds, all searching for cycling skills with different reasons, made my determination (决心) stronger. Before long, I was riding confidently.
With the joy of riding, I bought my own bike, not just for getting around but to get back lost time. It wasn’t simply a bike; it meant a chance I missed earlier. I completely lost myself in the experience, enjoying the beautiful scenery.
19. The writer lost interest in riding a bike because ________.
A. no one taught her how to ride a bike B. there was no need for her to do it
C. she was afraid to ride without training wheels D. her grandpa didn’t support her anymore
20. What made the writer finally decide to learn to ride a bike?
A. Moving to the countryside. B. Being the last one to the store.
C. Watching young kids ride bikes. D. Joining a bike-riding club.
21. In the writer’s mind, the bike was ________.
A. a sense of the freedom B. a tool for making money
C. a connection with others D. a way to recall her past time
22. The best title of the passage can probably be ________.
A. Riding for fun B. Riding over fear C. Riding all the way D. Riding with friends
C
The holiday is the season to be joyful. However, many people feel sad or worried during or after holidays. When such feeling is connected only with holidays and doesn’t happen at other times of the year, it’s often called holiday blues (忧郁).
▲ This can be a result of money problems, extra activities and stress around holidays. People can also have holiday blues for terrible relationships with family and being alone during the holidays. Much increased traffic around holidays can cause holiday blues, too.
Holiday blues can have you feeling like hiding instead of celebrating. They can also lead to thinking patterns that aren’t helpful. For example, if you angrily shout at your kids, then you may think you’re the worst mom. If you can’t make cookies this year, you will think you’re just not as nice as you used to be. If you make efforts to make money, you may feel you’ll never be rich. So we shouldn’t think little of holiday blues.
There are some very simple and useful ways to help people to deal with holiday blues. Start new traditions to your family. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Take some time to volunteer. Take some time to take a bike ride, a relaxing walk, etc. Don’t eat too much food—overeating can make your body sick and uncomfortable.
But if you have unshakable sadness, terribly hate eating, you may need to see a doctor. Let him check your degree of sadness or worries. Talking to someone may also help you feel better. But at other times you require medical treatment. Thus, you can shake the blues off and get back to the things about your life you do enjoy.
23. Which of the following can be put in the ▲ in Paragraph 2?
A. What holiday blues do people usually have? B. Why do people have holiday blues?
C. How do people with holiday blues feel? D. Who may have holiday blues?
24. How does the writer show the terrible feelings caused by holiday blues?
A. By giving some examples. B. By showing his experiences.
C. By comparing different people. D. By listing proper reasons.
25. What can help deal with holiday blues in Paragraph 4 and 5?
A. Pushing yourself to be perfect. B. Making efforts to make money.
C. Talking with some people. D. Enjoying food as much as you can.
26. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
D
A sports star at the college where I worked recently came to my office. After making a few mistakes during a weekend match, she couldn’t stop blaming (责备) herself. She told me, “I’m in best condition, and I practice hard. How is this happening?”
Many students, like this girl, believe that nights in the library and hours on the field should lead them to success. They believe that when they win, they feel powerful and smart. When they fail, they always can’t help thinking “it must be all my fault”.
We often talk about young adults fighting against failure because their parents have protected them from being uncomfortable. But there is something else here. Parents sometimes wrongly promise their children, “you can achieve anything if you are willing to work for it.” However, they sometimes fail although they try their best. Then what can we do to help?
Psychologists (心理学者) Luthar and Kumar believes, instead of allowing our kids to beat themselves up when things don’t go their way, we adults should help students go for success in healthier ways. We should teach them to regard failure as a natural part of learning. Parents and teachers are expected to spend time helping students to find purpose, or goals they really love to achieve, which may help them get greater life satisfaction. At Smith College where I teach, students are asked to find out how difficulties and missteps made them stronger or more powerful.
The point is not to tell our kids not to make efforts or try their best. But that they can control everything is not really resilience (适应力). We should be wise to remind them that something unexpected always happens in our lives.
27. According to Paragraph 2, many students think ________.
A. nothing can stop them but themselves B. effort is more important than ability
C. they are sure to succeed if they work hard D. success is not always under control
28. The underlined word “something” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A. they don’t want to work hard for their goals B. they are taught how to deal with difficulties
C. they have no ability to solve problems D. their parents lead them with a wrong message
29. According to psychologists Luthar and Kumar, parents and teachers should ________.
A. help students learn from mistakes B. help find out the way to their work
C. teach students how to avoid failure D. teach students to have higher dreams
30. The writer wrote the passage to ________.
A. tell students not to fail all the way B. introduce some good ways to lower study stress
C. encourage students to go for success in a proper way D. remind students to work hard for their life goals

17. According to the passage, “peach and plum trees” refer to (指) ________.
A. trees that produce lots of fruit B. fruit that tastes more delicious

A. a sense of the freedom B. a tool for making money
