M: Phil Cleaver, a British designer, won a prize in the 2024 Global Zodiac Design Competition for his work well including ancient representations of the Chinese dragon. To display his understanding of this year’s Chinese zodiac animal, the Chinese dragon, also known as “loong” according to its pronunciation in Chinese, Cleaver combined different symbolic objects in his work: an antique Chinese dragon-shaped pipe placed across an open book, with the book resting against a backboard. “The loong itself is an antique pipe, beautiful in its detail, and it sits on a book that is a story of a dragon. The book is a very old symbol of knowledge… the book reflects the knowledge and wisdom of the loong,” Phil Cleaver told Xinhua in a written interview. This is his second time taking part in this contest. Last year, for the contest marking the Year of the Rabbit, he presented a print entitled Rabbit Moon, which he said was inspired by an ancient Chinese fairy tale. Referring to a comparison between the Western and Chinese dragons, Cleaver said the two types of dragons share some similarities in how they are shown in paintings, but Chinese culture contributes much better qualities to the dragon than the concept of a horrible animal well accepted in Western culture.

Demis Hassabis, one of the recipients of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was born on July 27th, 1976, in London.
He started learning chess at 4 and won the London Under-8 Championship two years later. Another 7 years later, he achieved the second place globally in the under-14 age group chess competition. This was the first time that he’d shocked the world. In 1992, he was admitted to the Computer Science program at the University of Cambridge. He entered University College London in 2005 to pursue a Ph.D.in cognitive neuroscience. In 2011, he founded DeepMind, which is a world-leading artificial intelligence (AI) research group. After 5 years, the AI program AlphaGo he created defeated the world’s top Go player, Lee Sedol. In 2020, DeepMind’s AI system AlphaFold participated in a competition organized by the Critical Assessment of Structure Prediction (CASP) on calculating the 3D structure of protein molecules (分子) and achieved an unexampled level of prediction accuracy.
Hassabis was considered one of the “smartest humans on Earth” by the great British physicist Stephen Hawking, who served as a professor at the University of Cambridge before he passed away in 2018. In 2014, DeepMind was acquired by Google for 600 million dollars even before it had publicly released any products and had only 20 technicians. Since then, Hassabis and his team have influenced Google’s development direction for the next decade, guiding the tech giant from a mobile-first approach to an AI-first one.
Demis Hassabis, along with David Baker and John M. Jumper, was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their contributions to protein structure prediction. Their AlphaFold has solved a 50-year-old problem by being able to predict the complex structures of approximately 200 million known proteins. The success of AlphaFold not only lies in its accuracy of prediction but also in its broad application prospects. Through this model, scientists can gain a deeper understanding of the structure and function of proteins, providing more accurate information for new drug research and development and disease treatment.
24.At what age did Hassabis surprise the world for the first time?
A.4. B.6. C.13. D.16.
25.What is paragraph 2 mainly about regarding Hassabis?
A.His hobbies as a child. B.His growing-up experiences.
C.His studies on protein molecules. D.His purposes of inventing AlphaGo.
26.Why does the author mention Stephen Hawking?
A.To compare him with Hassabis. B.To recall the birth of DeepMind.
C.To stress Hassabis’ bond with him. D.To show Hassabis’ being recognized.
27.What does Hassabis’ success mainly imply?
A.AI aids scientific progress. B.Teamwork makes a difference.
C.Opportunities are multiple. D.Prediction is the key point.

As global energy demands continue to rise, scientists are increasingly focusing on sustainable energy generation to address the urgent challenges posed by the unfolding climate crisis.
“Humidity is a vast source of energy that, unlike solar and wind, is continuously available,” wrote Jun Yao, an assistant professor from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in a recent research report published in Advanced Materials. “However, the existing technologies for harvesting energy from air humidity are either not continuous or require unique materials, which has hindered their widespread application.”
Yao and his team have therefore developed a device named “Air-gen” that continuously harvest electricity from moisture in the air through a newly proven mechanism that he says can be applied to any material.
The device is made from a thin film containing many small holes called nanopores, tiny holes less than 100 nanometers — thinner than one-thousandth the width of a human hair. The top part is exposed to air, whereas the bottom is sealed. Water molecules (分子) in the air can move through these nanopores, from the top to the bottom. However, they often hit the surface of the pores. The top surface will be bumped into more frequently than the bottom. As the top has more contact with water molecule, electric charge (电荷) imbalance happens. In effect, it creates a device run like a battery — one that runs as long as there is any humidity in the air.
“This is similar to that of a cloud building up charges before producing lightning,” added Yao. “Both utilize the movement and charge-carrying in air water molecules to build up a charge separation. That’s why, we may view it as a small-version ‘man-made cloud’.”
Many scientists are impressed with the ideas behind the Air-gen. But some scientists have suggested that it might be hard for the Air-gen to create enough electricity to really make a difference — especially compared to power sources like solar energy.
But Dr. Yao and his team are already working on ways to make Air-gen technology more powerful. They intend to try stacking the devices to produce more energy without taking up more space — like accommodating more people in a tall building. Dr. Yao says, “What I envision is that sometime in the future, we can get clean electricity wherever we go.”
28.What does Paragraph 4 focus on?
A.Working principle. B.Working standard.
C.Research approach. D.Research procedure.
29.What can be inferred from the text?
A.The team got the inspiration from cloud and lighting.
B.Air-gen will be widely applied but not in a desert area.
C.Electric charges are generated by Air-gen without power.
D.The smaller the hole is, the greater the charge imbalance is.
30.What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 7 mean?
A.Maximizing the devices’ space. B.Laying the devices in a pile.
C.Distributing the devices evenly. D.Building the devices horizontally.
31.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Nanopores Unlocks New Possibilities
B.Electricity Is Generated Out of Thin Air
C.Humidity Serves as a New Sustainable Energy
D.“Man-made Cloud” Reshapes Electronic Harvesting
【答案】28.A 29.C 30.B 31.B
根据第四段“The device is made from a thin film containing many small holes called nanopores, tiny holes less than 100 nanometers — thinner than one-thousandth the width of a human hair. In effect, it creates a device run like a battery — one that runs as long as there is any humidity in the air.(该装置由一种薄膜制成,薄膜中含有许多被称为纳米孔的小孔,这些小孔小于100纳米——比人类头发宽度的千分之一还薄。 故选A项。
根据第四段“As the top has more contact with water molecule, electric charge (电荷) imbalance happens. In effect, it creates a device run like a battery — one that runs as long as there is any humidity in the air.(由于顶部与水分子接触更多,因此会发生电荷失衡。实际上,它创造了一种像电池一样运行的装置——只要有湿度,它就会运行)”可知,当顶部与水分子接触更多时,就会发生电荷失衡,从而产生电能,而这个过程是不需要外部电源的。由此可以推断出,Air-gen装置可以在没有电源的情况下产生电荷。故选C项。
30.词句猜测题。根据划线短语后文“to produce more energy without taking up more space — like accommodating more people in a tall building. (在不占用更多空间的情况下产生更多的能量——就像在高层建筑里容纳更多的人一样)”可知,这里是在打比方,说明堆叠设备就像在高楼里容纳更多的人一样,可以在有限的空间里产生更多的能量。因此,划线短语“stacking the devices”的意思应该是“把设备堆叠起来”,与B项“Laying the devices in a pile(把设备堆叠起来)”意思相近。故选B项。
通读全文,结合第三段中“Yao and his team have therefore developed a device named “Air-gen” that continuously harvest electricity from moisture in the air through a newly proven mechanism that he says can be applied to any material.(姚和他的团队因此开发了一种名为“Air-gen”的设备,该设备通过一种新证实的机制持续从空气中的水分获取电力,他说这种机制可以应用于任何材料)”可知,文章主要介绍了科学家们研制出了一种名为“Air-gen”的装置,它可以从空气中的湿气中持续收集电能,这一发明为可持续能源的发展提供了新的可能性。
D
It’s a debatable composition in countless foods as well as beauty products, but what is the problem with palm oil (棕榈油) and can it be avoided? Despite being so commonly seen and highly demanded, palm oil is facing increasing rejection from environmentalists.
As a vegetable oil made from palm trees, palm oil has long been considered a healthy oil. In spite of its higher price than others, time has seen its number grow rapidly and seen rainforests swept away in order to grow palm trees. It is estimated that an area equal to 300 football fields of rainforest is gone each hour to plant the palm trees.
The destruction of rainforest brings about a series of horrible consequences. Greenhouse gases are produced when clearing forests. The lack of forest then also results in less carbon dioxide being removed from the atmosphere, making the practice doubly problematic. People and animals native to the forest are also displaced and many animals will not survive outside of their natural habitat. Worse still, plantation workers in Indonesia consider orangutans (红毛猩猩) a harm and as many as 1,500 orangutans are killed in a single year.
Having seen the first-hand effects of palm oil production, some environmentalists felt an urge to find substitutes (替代品). They tend to use products with no palm oil. However, some people still argue that palm oil is necessary as it has substantial production. They don’t seem to understand that no crop can yield (产出) enough to justify such widespread deforestation and species wipe-out. Crops with lower production planted in less ecologically sensitive regions would be far more preferable.
As the global demand for palm oil is increasing, more rainforests will be wiped out. There’s no doubt that substitutes to palm oil are a necessary part of the sustainability issue.
32.Why do some environmentalists resist palm oil?
A.Because it is unaffordable to most families.
B.Because it is much unhealthier than others.
C.Because many rainforests were cleared to plant palm trees.
D.Because the palm trees destroy the ecosystem of rainforests.
33.Why is orangutans in Indonesia mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To make a comparison. B.To support an argument.
C.To arouse readers’ interest. D.To illustrate an assumption.
34.Why are some people for palm oil?
A.Because it is highly profitable. B.Because it has a wide range of uses.
C.Because it can’t be replaced. D.Because it bears a high output.
35.What is the suggestion offered in the text?
A.Raising the price of palm oil. B.Advocating palm oil-free alternatives.
C.Cutting down the demand of palm oil. D.Preventing palm tree planting on a large scale.
由文章第一段“Despite being so commonly seen and highly demanded, palm oil is facing increasing rejection from environmentalists.(尽管棕榈油如此常见且需求量很大,但它正面临着环保主义者越来越多的拒绝。)”和第二段“It is estimated that an area equal to 300 football fields of rainforest is gone each hour to plant the palm trees.(据估计,每小时有相当于300个足球场的雨林被用来种植棕榈树。)”
由文章第三段“People and animals native to the forest are also displaced and many animals will not survive outside of their natural habitat. Worse still, plantation workers in Indonesia consider orangutans (红毛猩猩) a harm and as many as 1,500 orangutans are killed in a single year.(森林里的人和动物也流离失所,许多动物在自然栖息地之外无法生存。更糟糕的是,印度尼西亚的种植园工人认为红毛猩猩是一种危害,一年内多达1500只猩猩被杀死。)”可知,第3段中提到了印度尼西亚的红毛猩猩来支持对棕榈油生产问题的论点,即让森林里的人和动物流离失所。故选B项。
34.细节理解题。由文章第四段“However, some people still argue that palm oil is necessary as it has substantial production.(然而,一些人仍然认为棕榈油是必要的,因为它的产量很大。)”
由文章最后一段“As the global demand for palm oil is increasing, more rainforests will be wiped out. There’s no doubt that substitutes to palm oil are a necessary part of the sustainability issue.(随着全球对棕榈油需求的增加,更多的热带雨林将被摧毁。毫无疑问,棕榈油的替代品是可持续发展问题的必要组成部分。)”可知,作者建议倡导使用无棕榈油的替代品。故选B项。

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
A primary goal of culturally responsive education is to help all students become respectful of various cultures and people that they’ll interact with. However, the world is more complex and diverse than the environment that students inhabit. 36 Then what might an educator do to promote diverse cultures in the classroom?
Classroom activities often work well. For example, educators can show students photographs of people from different cultures every day. 37 In this process, they’ll gradually learn to know and accept each kind of looks. It’s important to avoid teaching students about the same role models repeatedly.
38 Wall spaces can be used to display posters about cultural groups. Students can mark the countries from which their ancestors immigrated on a world map. And classroom signs can be hung in several languages. Such cultural exposure helps remind the students that people from diverse backgrounds are all born equal, protecting students from the cultural stereotypes
Another important goal of education is to teach students to appreciate their own culture. 39 To fit in with the social order, they sometimes have to change or remove their cultural behaviors. To avoid this situation. investigating unique characteristics of their community is one effective way to help students gain a greater appreciation of their own culture. Educators can encourage students to interview their family members about cultural practices and traditions and then share them with pride. 40
A.This can be a challenging task for educators.
B.Over time, wall spaces will expose students to rich diversity.
C.This activity can motivate students to show themselves bravely.
D.Students can see various appearances and find beauty from each.
E.Gradually, they will start to build confidence in their own culture.
F.Minority students may feel pressured to live in a multicultural group.
G.Providing a culturally responsive learning environment is also critical.
【答案】36.A 37.D 38.G 39.F 40.E
36.由上文“A primary goal of culturally responsive education is to help all students become respectful of various cultures and people that they’ll interact with. However, the world is more complex and diverse than the environment that students inhabit.(文化响应教育的主要目标是帮助所有学生尊重他们将与之互动的各种文化和人。然而,世界比学生所居住的环境更复杂、更多样。)”可知,这里讲了文化响应教育的主要目标和世界是复杂且多样的。而A项This can be a challenging task for educators.(这对教育工作者来说可能是一项具有挑战性的任务。) 故选A项。
37.由上文“For example, educators can show students photographs of people from different cultures every day.(例如,教育工作者可以每天向学生展示来自不同文化背景的人的照片。)” Students can see various appearances and find beauty from each.(学生可以看到各种各样的外貌,并从中发现美。)符合语境,其中various appearances与上文people from different cultures 对应,所以有承上作用。故选D项。
38.由下文“Wall spaces can be used to display posters about cultural groups. Students can mark the countries from which their ancestors immigrated on a world map. And classroom signs can be hung in several languages. Such cultural exposure helps remind the students that people from diverse backgrounds are all born equal, protecting students from the cultural stereotypes (刻板印象).(墙壁空间可用于展示有关文化团体的海报。学生可以在世界地图上标出他们祖先移民的国家。教室标志可以用几种语言悬挂。这种文化接触有助于提醒学生,来自不同背景的人生来平等,保护学生免受文化刻板印象的影响。)”可知,这里主要讲利用周围环境进行文化响应教育,而G项Providing a culturally responsive learning environment is also critical.(提供一个文化响应的学习环境也很重要。)
39.由下文“To fit in with the social order, they sometimes have to change or remove their cultural behaviors.(为了适应社会秩序,他们有时不得不改变或抛弃自己的文化行为。) ”可知,这里主要讲一些学生为了融入而改变或丢掉自己的文化,所以上文说明是哪些群体在丢掉自己的文化,而F项Minority students may feel pressured to live in a multicultural group.(少数民族学生可能会感到压力,不得不生活在一个多元文化的群体中.)
40.由上文“To avoid this situation. investigating unique characteristics of their community is one effective way to help students gain a greater appreciation of their own culture. Educators can encourage students to interview their family members about cultural practices and traditions and then share them with pride.(为了避免这种情况。调查他们社区的独特特征是帮助学生更好地欣赏自己文化的一种有效方法。教育工作者可以鼓励学生采访他们的家人,了解文化习俗和传统,然后自豪地分享。)”可知,这里主要讲怎样让学生不抛弃自己文化的方法,从而达到的效果,而E项Gradually, they will start to build confidence in their own culture.(渐渐地,他们将开始对自己的文化建立信心。)
You’ve been painting for a few years, and maybe you have even sold a painting or two. Are you ready to 41 the title of an amateur artist?
Distinguishing green hand from professional artists is a 42 task. It is not just a matter of your ability to create nice paintings. It’s not only about painting techniques. And for most cases, it doesn’t happen 43 . Very few artists become overnight success without years of struggle and suffering. To turn professional, people find it critical to develop a personal style. What makes your paintings 44 among other paintings out there? Are your paintings standing out unmistakably directed to you as the creator? A personal style comes along with technique, painting medium, and subject and it tends to develop gradually over time. You 45 it through unconscious and constant exploring and self-shaping. Style does not mean that you are painting the same subject or using the same painting medium. Salvador Dali used to use many artistic media, but they all have a 46 Dali style. Style refers to the emotions and thoughts delivered by your paintings, which people can identify with. Their 47 of the painter is then a sure thing.
Artists talk about their 48 all of the time. What gets you out of bed every morning to paint? How do you find the energy to have all your time devoted to painting? 49 , we all love to do what we do and we get a satisfaction out of creating. For the professional artist, it goes beyond that. Some artists wish to convey a deep message concerning life, society or even politics. Others simply seek 50 returns to cover kids’ tuition fees or pay family bills. Yet, all professional artists know that they have to keep working to achieve the goals.
Many amateur artists passively wait for 51 to come. If they are not in the mood, they do not bother wasting the time. They sometimes allow themselves to be occupied by events like parties. Professionals are never easily 52 or torn away from their art work in progress. Focused on their work so much, some even regard spending time outside their 53 as crime. 54 is their secret to high productivity.
Besides, professional artists are constantly prepared to grab new ideas for the next painting, which they believe is sure to be better than the previous one. The belief that there is always room for 55 keeps driving them forward in the art world where many masters have come along.

Every year, our swim team runs the Snack Bar at the pool ground to raise funds for covering the costs of swim competitions and equipment. However, during our first summer meeting last month, Coach Abby informed us that the Snack Bar would be closed for repairs until August.
Upon hearing the news, all the team members were worried that without a Snack Bar, we wouldn’t have funds, which meant, our swim team might have to be dismissed.
Supposing the worst, everyone was out of spirit. “Take it easy! I’ll figure it out. For now, boys, jump into the pool and get swimming!” said Coach Abby, gently comforting us. But none of us were swimming our best, and even though Coach Abby was smiling as usual, it was evident that she was concerned about the situation.
During the break, I proposed exploring alternative approaches for holding a fundraising event. My teammates erupted into a lively conversation. D.J. suggested a karaoke sing-along, while Tamara offered to bring starfish cookies for sale. Manny brought up the idea of games and prizes, while I thought we could run a drink stand.
After a heated discussion, it was decided that each of us would take turns to host the event throughout the week. Coach Abby heartily approved of our plan. My drink stand was scheduled for the last day of the event.
I was so thrilled about the upcoming event that I began my preparations a day ahead. When I was making the drinks, I noticed a very dark cloud outside the kitchen window. “Uh-oh! That’s not a rain cloud, is it?” I asked my mom, feeling a bit anxious. “Rain would be a disaster! It could ruin everything.”
“You know what they say,” she answered. “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.”
Then came the big day. Coach Abby helped me set up the drink stand and the teammates called out loudly to get everyone together at the pool ground. I hid a big box under the table and nobody knew what was inside. Everything was going smoothly as we wished.

Unluckily, clouds started to gather. Before we knew it, the rain was pouring down, making it difficult for everyone to seek shelter near the pool. Upon seeing this, my eyes lit up and I pulled out the box hidden under the table, taking out the stuff prepared earlier. With two booth umbrellas opened and attached to the table, a cosy, dry area came into view. My teammates gathered around me, enthusiastically assisting me to sell the hot chocolate I made with precision, which brought warmth to all those attending the fundraiser. Laughter filled the air once more.
After a while, Coach Abby made a cheerful announcement. “Thanks, everyone! We made such an achievement with joint efforts for the fundraiser that we’ll be able to participate in the swim competition this summer!” The crowd erupted into thunderous applause and cheers. In that moment, I realized the importance of preparing for the worst and working together, especially when the unexpected happened. Today, with mother’s words echoing in my mind, I turned a rainy day into an unforgettable success. Soon, the clouds parted, and rays of sunlight broke through, casting a golden glow over the pool.

Spending time in the great outdoors is a full-on sensory experience with endless skies, beautiful forests, the sounds of the wind and the warm feeling of sunrays 56 (rest) on your face. In addition to nature’s 57 (enjoy) sights, sounds and sensations, the familiar smells of nature can be just as appealing. In fact, a recent study found that nature doesn’t just smell good, but 58 (it) fragrances make people feel good as well.
The researchers from the University of Kent in the UK 59 (send) 194 participants to relax in the woodlands throughout the four seasons. The participants reported feeling relaxed when they smelled 60 they described as “fresh air” or “earthy” smells. According to the study, these smells brought back fun memories of their childhoods. For instance, pine trees made some participants think about Christmas.
“We found that smells affected multiple fields of well-being 61 physical well-being discussed most frequently, particularly in relation to relaxation, comfort and rejuvenation,” wrote the researchers in the study. They also found that people feel more settled in a smell-free zone, with this result possibly 62 (link) to the absence of bad-smelling urban smells, like pollution.
