Last year, something happened to my family. It nearly changed our life forever.
My brother Tom received a new train set. We decided to build a little “world” for it with mountains, street lights and even a lake. We found a large board and spent a week building the little “world” out of the board. We also wanted a lake, but it would take another day. Instead, we found a plastic box and filled it with water. We cut a hole in the board and placed the box under it. Now we had a lake. We even put a boat in it.
Later that day, we showed everyone the new train set. When I turned on the switch, the train began to move. Everyone was cheering. I had a look at Tom and he looked strange. He was not smiling but shaking. I was scared and cried, “Tom!” He didn't move. Suddenly, my dad realized what was happening. He turned off the switch quickly.
The water had leaked from the box and made the rug wet. It was just where Tom was standing. One of the wires for the street lights had fallen and was touching the water. We called 911 at once. Luckily, Tom was fine.

I can still remember how much fun I had riding around my neighborhood when I was young.
I got a bike from my cousin when I was nine years old. It was red with a blue light on the front of it. It had a bell with a yellow rope on it and I could ring it as I rode around. My nextdoor neighbor was a girl and she had a pink bike. We rode our bikes together every Saturday and Sunday. It was really exciting. We made up all kinds of games to play with our bikes. We lived on a street with very little traffic, so it was safe for us to ride across the street. We would start with our bikes facing the opposite direction and race down the street. It was great fun.
One day I jumped on my bike and went to the movies. But when I walked out of the cinema, I couldn't find it. Someone had stolen my bike and that was the last time I saw it. I cried on my way home. My parents dropped letters in the neighbors' mailboxes for help. A couple of days later, a woman came to my house with a blue bike. She said her son outgrew(因长大而放弃) the bike and he was happy to give his bike to me.
I couldn't take my eyes off the bike. It looked so nice. I even forgot to say thanks before I rode on it.

Have you bought any secondhand things? Have you sold anything of yours to others? Any stories behind it?
After a whole week of rain, we finally had a comfortable, beautiful summer day outside. My family and I were driving to a nearby town when we found a yard sale. We saw old toys and a couple of guitars. We saw huge piles of clothes and even a piece of furniture for sale. Best of all, we saw lots of smiling people talking, laughing, sitting and standing in the sunshine. Seeing all of this brought back memories of my childhood. Most of my clothes came from yard sales. My mom was a talented yard sale shopper. I used to hate going to them until I saw that they also sold old books there. After that, I always looked through the books until it was time to go. Sometimes my mom bought me one. Soon a large part of my home library came from yard sale books. To me, they were more priceless than new ones.
Why do we have yard sales? We throw away our old things and we buy “new” old things. But it certainly isn't for the money. It's that yard sales bring us together. We talk and catch up with old friends and new neighbors. We connect with kindness and our love for all the old goods. I think yard sales teach us something about life, too. All we get is to have the goods for a period of time. Then it is time to let it go and pass it on.
