Across the world, humans buy around 1.3 billion single-use plastic bottles a day. However, only about 9% of them are recycled and most of them end up in landfills, the ocean or elsewhere in nature.
When beach-loving Madison Checketts noticed that many plastic bottles polluted the sand during her family trip to California, the 12-year-old American girl realized that this needed to be changed. So for her school science project, she decided to focus on reducing plastic litter.
During her research, Madison came across a special method of packing water within an eatable material—a gel membrane (凝胶膜). At that time, the girl got her idea: She would design an eatable water bottle called the Eco-Hero.
To carry out her idea, Madison developed the method by doing scientific tests with common food additives (添加剂). She also learned from previous research on eatable water bottles. Based on the past research, she improved the method and made her bottles bigger and able to last for a longer time. She found that water, lemon juice and other chemicals could be used together to make a gel bag that wouldn’t break. And the bag could hold up to 3/4 cup of water and could be kept in the fridge for three weeks.
“My biggest goal with this project is to help the world,” says the young inventor. She hopes her invention can encourage others to take better care of the planet. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be in a big way,” she adds. “People can make a difference in the world, even if it’s just in a small way.”

With the winter vacation coming, I realized I needed to find a part-time job, because I didn’t want to ask my parents for money. I had imagined having a job at a winter camp where I could play games with children. In fact, the only job I could find was cleaning up tables at a local convenience store.
At first, I wanted to give up the job because getting up too early in the morning made me unhappy. I’ll never forget how tired I felt on my first day, but I’ll never forget sitting together and talking about our days with my workmates for the first time either. Suddenly, I felt good to be a member of them.
After working at the convenience store for almost one year, I was used to getting up so early, because I knew there would be a few good moments every day there.
Working at the convenience store, I’ve learned to grow into a boy that can depend on myself and get along well with others. And I’m not the shy person that I used to be. Meeting an impolite customer might make me feel bad, but very soon I could deal with it without difficulty. The job has given me so much, and I can’t wait to go back to the convenience store and continue to grow from my experience.

My 100 Days Without a Mobile Phone
When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone? Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time?
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (恼人的).
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted (分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes — changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused (专注的). Before, while doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that the urge (冲动) was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.

To carry out her idea Madison developed the method by doing scientific tests with common food additives (添加剂). She also learned from previous research on eatable water bottles.

第三部分 书面表达(共两节, 满分30分)
第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)
阅读下面短文,完成短文后的问题。
Before I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes.
