National Parks Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky The park is the site of the longest known cave system in the world, which is really appropriate for a park called“Mammoth.” It's the ideal place for an adventure lover, with about400 miles of tunnels and caves accessible. One of the most popular sections to visit within the caves is called Frozen Niagara, a complicated part of the caves that resembles a frozen waterfall. Great Sand Dunes(沙丘) National Park, Colorado From some angles, you'd feel you' re in the middle of the Sahara while walking through Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. Occasionally, the nearby Modano Creek will overflow and create a sort of natural“water slide” that makes this usually dry area extra fun. The park is a perfect place to see a range of biodiversity, since it's home to wetlands, lakes, and forests, in addition to sand dunes. White Sands National Monument, New Mexico This national park is home to the largest area of sand dunes, making it a truly otherworldly destination in our own backyard. The sand may look like snow, but it can definitely get hot out there. Bring water and a sled, because it's a popular place for sand dune sledding. Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve, Idaho This is probably the closest you' ll get to the moon without actually going to the moon. With its lava fields and sparse(稀疏的) plant life, a hike through this unique park will feel like you' ve stepped onto another planet. There are many hiking tracks throughout the monument, so you can see as much of it as you like. 21. What can people do in Mammoth Cave National Park? A. Visit a waterfall. B. Walk on the moon. C. Explore the tunnels. D. See diverse wildlife. 22. What do we know about White Sands National Monument? A. It is located in Mexico City. B. Its snow landscape is breathtaking. C. It is a popular place for rock climbing. D. It is famous for its extensive sand dunes. 23. Where is this text probably taken from? A. A guideline. B. A brochure. C. A textbook. D. A paper. B In 1998, Boulanger traveled to China for the first time. He says he never forgets the vast lands and beautiful scenery. 10 years later, he traveled to Huangshan Mountain, a place that changed his life. He lived in Tunxi District at the foot of the mountain for three months. Surrounded by mountains and rivers, the district is famous for its Huizhou culture that is a unique regional culture. “I didn’t want to leave here anymore. I love the culture too much,” Boulanger said. His trip to China thus turned into a long-term stay. In 2011, Boulanger became a tour guide. Unlike other guides, he rarely takes his guests— mostly foreigners— to the most popular attractions. Instead, he searches for unknown scenery in the surrounding area that he believes shows more real local culture. “I just open the map app and see if there are any villages around. If there are, I will go there and see if it's worth traveling to.” Boulanger often hikes or rides a motorcycle with his friends to find hidden scenery around Huangshan Mountain. They are surprised from time to time by streams, ancient villages and inaccessible forests. Boulanger enjoys time spent camping and hiking with his friends. They chat with locals, and fall asleep to the sounds of frogs and cicadas (蝉). Sometimes, he also travels with his Chinese tour guide friends. “It's very interesting that even at the scenic spots that they have visited countless times, they have never been to the places I take them to,” Boulanger said proudly. Boulanger often shares the beautiful moments on social media. He has since taken about120,000 photos in China, and especially likes one photo: a little girl holding a cartoon umbrella, squatting(蹲) in the middle of an ancient street and building a snowman with a small shovel in the heavy snow. “I can not believe the girl was me when I was little!” a young Chinese netizen commented shortly after the photo was posted. The magical connection between past and present, and between reality and the Internet amazed him. 24. Why did Boulanger decide to stay in China? A. He found a well-paid job as a tour guide. B. He was deeply attracted by the Huizhou culture. C. He wanted to become a professional photographer. D. He fell in love with Huangshan Mountain's scenery. 25. What makes Boulanger's tours different from those of other guides? A. He only takes foreign tourists. B. He focuses on popular attractions. C. He explores unknown local scenery. D. He uses traditional methods of transportation. 26、 How did the Chinese girl feel when she saw the photo? A. Astonished. B. Delighted. C. Relieved. D. Frustrated. 27. What is the best title for the text? A. Boulanger's Love for China's Huizhou Culture B. Boulanger's Journey Through China's Popular Attractions C. Exploring the Magic of China's Ancient Villages and Forests D. Discovering Hidden Treasures of Huangshan with Boulanger C Many of us start exercising in the hope of losing unwanted pounds. Unquestionably, aiming to be more active is a good thing. But if the main reason is to lose weight, your resolution could very well come to nothing. For starters, exercise is typically useless for weight loss. Take walking for example. A 150- pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That's equal to one can of soda— not exactly a great return on your investment of time and effort. It's much easier just to skip the soda. When exercise is added to a diet, the results are equally negligible. Researchers found that a combination of dieting and exercising generated no greater weight loss than dieting alone after six months. At 12 months, the diet-and-exercise combination showed an advanced result, but it was slight about 4 pounds on average. In studies where exercise has produced meaningful weight loss, participants burned at least400 to 500 calories per session on five or more days a week. To achieve that, a 150-pound person would need to walk a minimum of 90 minutes or run 30 minutes per day. In short, sessions need to go well beyond what most of us are willing or able to do. And even if we manage to make that much effort, our bodies often compensate (补偿) by boosting appetite and slowing down metabolism(新陈代谢) , which over time limit how many pounds we lose. When exercise fails to meet our weight-loss expectations, we often stop working out. Perhaps the biggest problem with exercising to drop pounds is that it turns physical activity into punishment—a price we have to pay for a slimmer body. How many times have you heard someone say“I’ ll need to do extra exercise” after eating too much? We treat exercise as a form of self-punishment for being“bad”. In this case, we' re unlikely to keep doing it for very long. The conclusion is that we' re more likely to treat exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight. 28. What does the underlined word“negligible” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Insignificant. B. Abnormal. C. Noticeable. D. Challenging. 29. What is the purpose of paragraph 4? A. To add backgrounds. B. To make comparisons. C. To further support the main idea. D. To recommend some exercise forms. 30 What is the author's main point about exercising to lose weight? A. Exercise is effective enough for weight loss. B. Exercise is better than diet for losing weight. C. Exercise must be combined with diet to work. D. Exercise for weight loss often causes frustration and quitting. 31. What does the text intend people to do? A. Avoid exercising if the goal is to lose weight. B. Exercise more intensely to burn more calories. C. Combine exercise and diet strictly to lose weight. D. Exercise mainly for health rather than weight loss. D The Mekong River is Southeast Asia's longest river. It passes through China, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam. About 60 million people depend on the river for food and survival. It is also an important environment for numerous river creatures. Researchers say a large fish that was thought to have disappeared from Asia's Mekong River has been seen in the waterway in recent years. The fish is called a giant salmon carp. The predatory(食肉的) fish can grow to more than one meter in length and have an identifiable yellow spot surrounding its unique big eyes. A recent study detailed the most recent sightings of the fish. The lead writer Chheana Chhut said the fish was seen at least three times between 2020 and 2023. “The giant salmon carp is like a symbol of the Mekong region,” Chheana recently told The Associated Press. He was the co-writer with other researchers of a study announcing the findings in the publication Biological Conservation. Chheana said researchers had believed that the last confirmed sighting of the fish in the Mekong was in 2005. But since 2017, biologists following the movements of migratory fish in Cambodia have developed relationships with local fishing communities. They asked people in the communities to inform them of any unusual sightings. That process led to the finding that three giant salmon carps were identified in the Mekong River and a neighboring waterway in Cambodia between 2020 and 2023. Researchers say the sightings give them new hope for the future of the species. “This rediscovery is very thrilling, significant news,” said Zeb Hogan. He is a fish biologist at the University of Nevada, Reno, who was part of the research team. But the problems the fish experienced also demonstrate the dangers facing all migratory species in the Mekong. The huge river faces industrial pollution and overfishing, among other problems. Brian Eyler is director of the Southeast Asia Program at the Stimson Center in Washington, D. C. He was not involved in the research. Eyler said one issue is that more than700 dams are built along the river and neighboring waterways. In addition, there are very few workable“fish passages” that help species avoid obstructions. 32. What can we know about the giant salmon carps? A. They were extinct nineteen years ago. B. They have characteristic physical features. C. They are the largest fish in the Mekong River. D. They do not inhabit the Mekong River anymore. 33. How did researchers manage to find the giant salmon carps in the Mekong River? A. By conducting underwater surveys. B. By living with fishing communities. C. By seeking help from local fishermen. D. By using advanced tracking technology. 34. What is Zeb Hogan's attitude to the reappearance of the giant fish? A. Indifferent. B. Tolerant. C. Critical. D. Positive. 35. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. What the researchers will focus on. B. What threatens the Mekong migratory species. C. The history of fishing in the Mekong. D. The ecological significance of the Mekong River. 第二节 (共 5 小题; 每小题2.5 分, 满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Body language is a form of nonverbal communication that deals with the way facial expressions and body movements are used to express people's true feelings.
