Step 1: Warming up (5 minutes)

2. Ask students if they have any ideas about protecting the environment before reading.
Step 3: While-reading (20 minutes)
1. Fast reading
- Ask students to read the text quickly and answer the following questions:
- Where does Katie live?
- What does Katie think people waste the most?
- Check the answers with the whole class.
2. Careful reading
- Ask students to read the text carefully again and complete the following tasks:
- Tick the points mentioned in the lesson. (sort garbage at home, reuse plastic bags, ride bikes or take buses, take short showers)
- Compare the two pictures and tick the words to describe the differences. (pollution, clean, garbage, air, car, sky, transportation, tree, environment)
- Match the actions to whether they are good or bad for the environment. (open a window instead of turning on the air conditioning - good; throw garbage on the ground - bad; use both sides of the paper - good; sort the waste before throwing it away - good; cut down trees in forests - bad; turn off the tap when we are brushing our teeth - good)
- Check the answers in pairs and then with the whole class.
Step 4: Post-reading (5 minutes)
1. Group discussion
- Divide students into groups of four and ask them to discuss the following questions:
- What else can we do to protect the environment in our daily life?
- How can we encourage more people to protect the environment?
- Each group should appoint a spokesperson to report their discussion results to the class.
