Step 1 Lead-in
T:We’ve been reading a lot of detective stories recently, and they are full of mysteries and surprises! Is there someone that you think he is clever. Yes. So who is that person and why do you think so ? Have a quick discussion with your partner. 3 minutes, go.
Guessing game:See, there must be clever person in our life. And do you wanna find out that person in my mind that is the cleverest? Okay, I'll show you a picture and please have a guess. ---This is a boy. The boy has a pair of glasses
Step 2 Rule Explanation
1.Find the rules
T:Now, could you read the sentence? This is the boy... Ready, go. Very good reading. So now let's analyze this sentence a little bit. First, see, we use who to connect these two sentence and what is who? This who is talking about what? Very good. Talking about this boy.
2.Explain the function
T:So now who is a pronoun. Boy is a noun. Great. And we use this small sentence, which is called a clause, to talk about this boy. Alright, in this way, we could talk about this person more clearly, don't you think? So we are talking about a boy. Which boy? A boy that has a scar and a pair of glasses, right? Very good.
3.Explain the choice of pronoun
Sentence1:This is a boy who/that has a bow tie and a pair of glasses
Sentence2:There is a boy in the cartoon which/that is full of miracles.
T: If we are talking about a person, we use who. And if we are talking about a thing or an object, we use which. We could use that to replace who in this sentence and which in this sentence.
Stage2:Practice
Step1:Fill in the blanks
Simon:Edgar Allan Poe was the man (1) ___________ first wrote detective stories in English.
Millie: Japanese writers have written some great stories (2) ___________require readers to check every tiny detail for possible clues to the criminal cases.
Daniel: Sherlock Holmes is a character (3) ___________ was created by Arthur Conan Doyle as a master at solving crimes.
Step2:Complete the sentence
Simon and his friends are talking about detectives. Use who, which or that to help them complete their sentences.
