Social media plays an important role in our lives. We check our social media accounts(账户)
such as emails and Facebook almost every day. Latelyꎬ people like posting pictures just for the
purpose of getting others attention through their “ flowers”ꎬ no matter whether these pictures are
good or not. Recentlyꎬ I was very annoyed with these types of postsꎬ so I decided to stop using so ̄
cial media for one week.
After not using social media for a weekꎬ I can honestly say that everything has changed. Be ̄
fore last weekꎬ I used to check Facebook more than five times a dayꎬ as well as of my other social
accountsꎬ and I couldnt understand why I did that. Now I check Facebook much less. People are
so obsessed with posting pictures that have no meaning to them just for the purpose of posting
something online. Whenever I look at Instagramꎬ all of the comments on pictures are the same.
People depend on how many “likes” they get on what they post as an achievement. I just want to
sayꎬ “None of it matters!”
As I start to fully understand this nowꎬ I wonder why I have social media if all of this annoys
me so much. But then I realize that I actually post meaningful things that my friends enjoyꎬ and to
meꎬ thats more important than getting “likes” on a picture.
Maybe as a societyꎬ we are using social media wrongly. I think we sometimes forget that social
media helps us contact with people who are far away from us. I think its a beautiful thing that I am
able to go on Facebook and feel connected with people that I dont have the opportunity of seeing
every single day anymore.

Social media has become a part of our lives. It is the communication tool that children have
been brought up withꎬ but it is still illegal(违法的) for a Canadian child under the age of 13 to
have a social media page.
This is a shame when you consider the learning opportunities that social media offers. At our
schoolꎬ Vernon Christian Elementary School in Vernonꎬ B. C.ꎬ I can see how it provides children
with the chance to learn how to communicate properly and effectively. If they want their friends to
follow them or re ̄tweet(转发) their messagesꎬ they must learn to write them creatively in an inter ̄
esting and amusing styleꎬ attach(粘贴) picturesꎬ and ask questions to invite a response. Students
will learn a lot from the process.
Social media can also help students to sharpen up their writing skills. My students usually use
the blog to keep a diary about something that interests themꎬ and suddenly they appear to love
writing.
So is it necessary to restrict(限制) students in the social media age? Not really. A survey has

found that 59 percent of children have already used a social network by the time they are 10ꎬ and
48 percent have messaged people they didnt know by the age of 12.
Of courseꎬ primary schools should care about the dangers of social media. Measures(措施)
should be taken to protect students from the dangers. In our schoolꎬ we have a social media plat ̄
form with a teachers dashboard(信息窗) where all activities can be managed. On one occasionꎬ a
boy wrote hurtful comments(评论) about a girl in a post message. After a discussion with him
about why it is wrong to send hurtful emailsꎬ he was embarrassed and said sorry to the girl.
Over the past 23 years teaching in British Columbiaꎬ I have focused on computing. I therefore
take notice of the bad effects of social media on primary students. Howeverꎬ social media offers
learning and communicating opportunities to elementary students. More importantlyꎬ we cannot ig ̄
nore the fact elementary children are using social media. I strongly believe that exposing students
to social media will equip them to be wiser grow ̄ups in the future.
