Worlds of Fun
Location: Worlds of Fun is located off Highway 435 in Kansas City, Missouri.
History: Worlds of Fun was opened on May 26, 1973, at a cost of 25 million dollars. Loosely themed around the Jules Verne book, Around the World in Eighty Days, the park was founded by Hunt Midwest Company. In 1982, Hunt Midwest bought a nearby waterpark, Oceans of Fun. In 2013, Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun were combined to a one ticket admission, providing all guests with access to 235 acres of amusement and water rides.
Hours: Worlds of Fun is open from April through Halloween.
Tickets: Buy and print online. Always try to buy your tickets in advance, to save time when you get to the park.
Reservations: Worlds of Fun sells “Fast Lane” cards that save riders’ time by allowing them to bypass the majority of wait for most of rides and attractions including Mamba, Prowler, and Patriot. Ride as many times as you want all day long.
Strategy: Most visitors tend to begin the day with Prowler, the hottest attraction in the park. Use that tendency to your advantage and head to the Patriot first. After that, try the Dragons. Then work your way back to the Prowler. After riding the Prowler, there is only one coaster left, Mamba. Hit it next. If the park is not very crowded, you can ride Boomerang on the way to Mamba. After riding Mamba, head back for a ride on the Wolf. By then you will have tried most of the popular rides and attractions in the shortest possible time.

The lights go down, music plays, and a young woman on a bike at the front of the class encourages students to spin faster and harder. When the lights go back on, the students on the bikes pullout their notebooks, and it’s clear that this is not Soul Cycle. Instead, it’s a first-of-its-kind business school course at Fordham University that is taught on spin bikes in a university.
“It’s the first class that I mention to anybody when anybody asks me what classes I’m taking,” said Amanda Vopat, 22, a business administration major. “I think people are really excited about it.”
The 75-minute, twice-weekly course is the brainchild of Jul it a Haber, a business school professor at Fordham. “I have been introducing movement and fitness in my classes for the past seven years,” she said. “I found the spin class would really allow students to exercise while a professor lectures at the same time.”
The course the students are taking while cycling is no joke. Managing Professional Relationships is an upper-level business school course taken primarily by juniors and seniors. The students are fully instrumental in each class, selecting the music, leading stretches before and after class and leading the intervals during the class.
Haber stops her lecture every 20 minutes throughout the class. While one student turns off the lights, another student turns up the music and a third student goes to a bike in the front of the class to lead their classmates in high-intensity interval that lasts two to three minutes, just enough to re-energize the students.
“It’s a fantastic way of engaging students and as a professor, as a teacher, that’s really gratifying.” she said. “They don’t have their smartphones, and they don’t have laptops so they are physically engaged and also mentally engaged in what is being said.”
The course is the first of its kind at Fordham, and Haber believes it is also a first across the United States. She has authored research on the unique classroom approach, which she calls fitness integrated learning.
Donna Rapaccioli, the head of Fordham’s Gabelli School of Business, described how students were “energized” by the class and said Fordham was open to expanding it to other courses. “Definitely,” Rapaccioli answered when asked if Haber’s course represents the future of learning.
25. Why are the lights adjusted now and then during the session?
A. To create a tense atmosphere.
B. To warn the students to work harder.
C. To remind the students of their activity.
D. To call the students’ attention on notebooks.
26. What can best describe Professor Haber?
A. Ambitious and smart. B. Hardworking and cheerful.
C. Creative and open-minded. D. Confident and humorous.
27. What is the new course aimed at?
A. Arousing the students’ interest.
B. Grabbing the student’s full attention.
C. Conducting a national research.
D. Creating a new future of learning.
28. What was the author’s purpose in quoting Rap accioli?
A. To tell the future of Haber’s course.
B. To show the success of Haber’s course.
C. To compare Haber’s course with others’.
D. To promote the popularity of Haber’s course.

As students return to school this fall, many of them— perhaps especially those from historically disadvantaged student groups will be starting the academic year with achievement levels lower than where they were at the beginning of summer break. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as summer learning loss. We review what is known about summer loss and offer suggestions for schools looking to solve the problem.
The recent studies on summer loss have been rather comprehensive. One study found that students, on average, lost between 25-30 percent of their school-year learning over the summer; additionally, black and Latino students tended to gain less over the school year and lose more over the summer compared to white students.
However, an analysis of the national study found little evidence of overall loss over the summers after grades K and 1, and the summer loss gaps widened in some subjects and grades but not others. Von Hippel and Hamrock re-analyzed two earlier data sets and concluded that gaps “do not necessarily. . . grow fastest over the summer”. Thus, it seems summer loss occurs, though not universally across geography, grade level or subject.
Schools want to address the issue of summer learning loss not only because it may widen achievement gaps, but also because it “wastes” so much of the knowledge students have gained during the school year. Summer loss also undoubtedly increases the amount of time teachers have to spend “re-teaching” last year’s content.
Traditionally, educators and policy makers have relied on conventional summer school programs to solve summer learning loss. Not surprisingly, research suggests that programs are more effective when students attend consistently and spend more time on task academically. Regardless of the design, these policies should offer engaging options for students over the summer so that summer learning programs do not feel like punishment for students who would rather be enjoying summer vacation. Doing so would set more students up for success as the school year gets underway.
32. What’s the author’s aim by writing Paragraph 1?
A. To raise a question. B. To make a comparison.
C. To analyze the figures. D. To illustrate an example.
33. According to the studies, what can we know about summer learning loss?
A. Immigrant students experienced the most summer loss.
B White students did not lose learning over the summer.
C. Summer learning loss after grades K and 1 was alarming.
D. Summer learning loss seemed to vary in grades and subjects.
34. Why do schools want to solve the problem according to the fourth paragraph?
A. It may narrow achievement gaps.
B. It may cause repetitive work for teachers.
C. It may stop students gaining more knowledge.
D. It may increase teachers’ new teaching content.
35. What does the author think of summer school programs?
A. The conventional programs are ineffective.
B. Students should do all academic tasks.
C More choices should be provided for students.
D. The programs are punishment for many student.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Most of you have probably felt this before — you wait a long time for something, but when it gets close, you’re afraid of what’s coming. That’s exactly how I felt before my first day of senior high school. I worked hard to pass the tests and had an interview with the headmaster to get into this famous school. When it was finally time to start, I couldn’t sleep the night before because I was so nervous about how I would look in front of everyone.
It was Monday morning. I was too excited to sleep the night before, so I arrived at school half an hour early. I walked nervously through the hallway. After about 15 minutes, the hallway was packed with students. The teachers seemed too busy to notice me. I knew which room I needed to go to and had already checked that it was open, but I was hesitant (犹豫不决的) to go in and stood alone. The students moved around me as if I wasn’t there, and I felt disappointed and lonely.
Suddenly, a well-dressed boy got close to me. He introduced himself as Thompson and asked if I was lost and if he could help me with anything. I realized how kind he was, and he was exactly who I had wished for a minute before, but I was too nervous to be friendly. Instead of accepting his help and making friends with him, I told him to mind his own business and that I was old enough to find my class without anyone’s help.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Luckily, the boy smiled at me and went away without getting angry.

B. White students did not lose learning over the summer.
C. More choices should be provided for students.
D. The programs are punishment for many student.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Luckily, the boy smiled at me and went away without getting angry.

Unexpectedly, Thompson walked into the same classroom.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Luckily, the boy smiled at me and went away without getting angry. I felt a wave of shame wash over me. I realized my response had been uncalled for, especially from someone who was trying to help. As I stood there, I wished I could take my words back. The bell rang, signaling the start of the first period, and I reluctantly walked into my classroom, still feeling embarrassed about my earlier reaction.
Unexpectedly, Thompson walked into the same classroom. My heart sank, and I hoped he wouldn’t recognize me as the rude boy from the hallway. But to my surprise, he walked over and sat down next to me, flashing a friendly smile. I took a deep breath and decided to change my approach. “Hey, I’m sorry about earlier. I was really nervous,” I said, trying to sound sincere. “No worries! It’s a big day for all of us. I was nervous too,” he replied. As the class progressed, I felt the weight of my earlier anxiety lift. Thompson ended up being a great friend, and that first day, which had started so painfully, turned into a memorable experience filled with laughter and new beginnings.
