Pan Zhanle of China broke his own world record on the way to winning the men’s 100-meter freestyle Wednesday night, finishing in 46.40 seconds for his country’s first swimming gold medal of the Paris Olympics.
That mark topped his 46.80 swum at the February world championships in Doha.
“It was a magical moment, really magical,” Pan said. “The record was not just for the Chinese team, but for the world. This is a small step by breaking this record.”
In this swimming race, the 19-year-old Pan had an edge over Kyle Chalmers of Australia, who clocked a 47.48 for silver and Romanian bronze medalist David Popovici in 47.49.
No world marks had been broken through the first four days in the pool at the Paris Games.
Chalmers won gold in the 100 free in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, and was the silver medalist three years ago in Tokyo behind American Caeleb Dressel. Dressel did not qualify (取得资格) this time.
Chinese swimmers in Paris said they have been tested more often than before in recent months, sometimes even three or four times a week. But Pan felt that all of this seemed very usual to him.
“This was standard,” he said. “The tests were carried out according to the rules. I don’t think it influenced my performance.”
He also stated on the social media platform, “One can swim fast in an individual pool! In a group pool, one can swim even faster! I offer this gold medal to my great motherland!” His words moved and made Chinese people proud.
The Olympic winner, who was 20 on August 4th, has written a new story for Chinese swimming with persistence and hard work, making people have big hopes for his future.

Nineteen days. 10,500 athletes and 32 sports. Paris 2024 is now in the past. At the 33th Summer Olympic, some athletes broke records and others realized their dreams. But were the Games just about winning? Let’s take a look back on them.

Qiu Haiwei, 17, and Huang Qingliang, 16, are two lion dance lovers. They started learning the dance two years ago. “The lion dance has been an important part of my life. In my childhood, whenever I heard the beating of drums and gongs, I knew the lion dance was being performed.” Said Huang Qingliang.

Also, coaches (教练) can be hard to find, so it’s difficult for a lion dance team to go. But since 2017, many local governments teamed up with companies (公司) and schools to help develop the ancient art. “We must work hard to help pass on the heritage and its spirit to the young. It is valuable wealth.” Said Deng Minghua, who is working for the cultural heritage.
