Everyone has that special person in their lives who act s like a role model to them. For many of us, including me, that person is our own mother. But in my case, there is another person who is my perfect mentor (导师) and friend. It’s Nana, my mum’s father.
My Nana, since I was a kid, brought me up in the most unforgettable way possible, babying me by buying toys and presenting me with sweets and candies constantly and spending time with me, which created an everlasting bond between us.
Fast-forward a couple of years, when I began to outgrow these toys or candies, Nana didn’t just stop there. He began taking me almost every weekend to the local club where he had a membership. It meant the world to me as I could do absolutely whatever I pleased there. Other than that, Nana would take me to many parks, especially when there was a flower show on or something of that sort. He was very enthusiastic about nature and spent hours around it, enjoying what it had to offer.
Anyhow, his immense love didn’t end there...
My Nana had grown older. Now he finds it hard to drive and walk too much, so he prefers to stay at home. What I do now is to try to give him company and talk to him mainly about his travels at sea, as he was a sailor, and the various countries he visited and how he spent his early years and about my school, etc.
I’ll never be able to repay my Nana for all the kindness and comfort he gave to me. Thank you, Nana, from the bottom of my heart for all you’ve done for me.

Many English expressions and idioms use parts of the body to describe things unrelated to the body. For example, a green thumb means to be good at growing vegetables, flowers and other plants. And if something costs an arm and a leg, it is very expensive.
Well, today, we talk about your shoulder. This part connects your arm to your body. And the shoulder finds its way into many expressions.
For starters, let’s talk about “shoulder” as a verb. If you shoulder something, you accept it as your responsibility; you give support, or you take the blame.
And this is a great place to start. This idea of taking responsibility and giving support leads us to some other “shoulder” expressions. For example, during difficult times in our lives, it is often necessary to have a shoulder to lean (倚靠) on or a shoulder to cry on. When we lean on someone’s shoulder, we ask for their help. When we cry on someone’s shoulder, they are there for support. We call people who give us a shoulder to lean on or cry on our “support system”.
There is another way our shoulders give us support. If you are successful in your career but others have come before you, you can say you are standing on the shoulders of giants. This means you have not succeeded on your own. You have learned from others in the same field who had earlier successes.
Now, from our shoulders, let’s move up to our heads. Our heads are centered between our shoulders. So, it should not be surprising that we have a couple of expressions that use both.
If you have a good head on your shoulders, you are thoughtful and smart and you often achieve success in life. This means you are much better than those in a similar field or competition.
8. Which expression shows that someone pays too much money?
A. You cry on a shoulder. B. You spend an arm and a leg.
C. You need a green thumb. D. You shoulder the responsibility.
9. Who can be called your “support system” when you are in trouble?
A. The person succeeding in life on his own.
B. The person lending you a shoulder to cry on.
C. The person standing on the shoulders of giants.
D. The person helping you succeed in the special field.
10. What is a man having a good head on his shoulders like?
A. He looks very handsome. B. He is healthy and positive.
C. He is wise and thoughtful. D. He can overcome all the difficulties.
11. What’s the purpose of this text?
A. To show how to learn some English expressions.
B. To encourage people to study English expressions.
C. To tell us the kinds of English expressions and idioms.
D. To share some expressions about our head and shoulders.
B 9. B 10. C 11. D

A young Dutch inventor is widening his effort to cleanup floating (浮动的) plastic from the Pacific Ocean. He has developed a floating device (设备) to trap plastic waste moving into rivers before it reaches the oceans.
Boyan Slat was just 18 years old when he invented a system for catching waste in the ocean. He also founded an environmental group called “The Ocean Cleanup”. Its purpose is to develop the system. Last year, Slat showed the next step: a floating device which is called Interceptor. It removes plastic out of rivers. The device is powered by energy from the sun. “The 1,000 rivers are responsible for about 80% of plastic going into the world’s oceans,” said Slat. Three of the machines have already been used. Each machine costs about $775, 660, but the cost might drop as production increases.
Since they were used, the machines have been doing very well, collecting the plastic bottles and all the rubbish in the rivers. According to Slat, it is necessary to close “the tap”, which means preventing more plastic from reaching the ocean in the first place. He wanted to clean them all in the next five years. “This is not going to be easy, but if we do get this done, we could truly make our oceans again, ”said Slat.
The device is designed to be safe in rivers. Its nose is shaped to change directions to keep it away from larger floating things. It works by guiding plastic waste into an opening in the front of the device. The waste is then carried inside the machine where it is dropped into containers. The devices ends a text message to local operators that can come and empty it when it is full.
12. What do we know about Interceptor?
A. It needs solar power to work. B. It is mainly used in the oceans.
C. It is being under test. D. It can help sort waste.
13. What does “the tap” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A. The waste. B. The oceans.
C. The machines. D. The rivers.
14. What’s the function of the device’s nose?
A. To ensure the device’s safety. B. To send operators text messages.
C. To empty the waste. D. To serve as containers.
15. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A novel. B. A magazine.
C. A diary. D. A guidebook.
A 13. D 14. A 15. B

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school. On turning a corner, Robert cried out, “Oh! Look, a fight! Let's go and see!”
“None of our business!” said Henry. “Let us go home quietly and not meddle(管闲事)with it. Or we may get into trouble. Also, our parents are expecting to have dinner with us and I don't want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward(胆小鬼)!”said Robert running off angrily.
Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual. But Robert had told all the boys in class what happened to Henry and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and wouldn't play with him.
Henry was a bit sad but he wasn't angry with them for Robert's rude behavior, because he knew that they misunderstood him, and that he was just afraid of doing wrong. Thus, he ignored their laughter and continued to focus on his study.
However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home together with him any more. Instead, he befriended the boys who regarded Henry as a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go back home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, with all of his learning tasks completed and feeling a little tired, Henry decided to take a walk along the river. All of a sudden, he heard someone crying for help. Knowing someone was in danger, Henry ran in the direction of crying as quickly as he could. While getting closer, he saw a boy struggling in the water with several boys that often played with Robert recently onshore, knowing nothing to do.

48. He ignored their laughter and continued to focus on his study.
49. He will run as quickly as possible to ask for help of grown-ups nearby. Because the boy struggling in the river is Robert, and he must save his friend, only on the premise that he is safe. So it is wiser to ask for the adults’ help instead if jumping into the river himself.
1. 根据第一段“Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. (罗伯特和亨利是同一个班级里的两个朋友。)”可知,他们是朋友,故互相是友善的,故填friendly。
2. 根据第一段“Oh! Look, a fight! Let's go and see! (哦!看,有人在打架!我们去看看吧!)”可知,有人打架,这里需要使用现在分词表示动作正在发生,故填fighting。
3. 根据第二段““None of our business!” said Henry. “Let us go home quietly and not meddle(管闲事)with it. Or we may get into trouble. Also, our parents are expecting to have dinner with us and I don't want them to worry about me.” (“不关我们的事!”亨利说。“让我们安静地回家,不要插手这件事。否则我们可能会陷入麻烦。另外,我们的父母期待和我们一起吃晚饭,我不想让他们担心我。”)”可知,Henry担心家长会着急,所以没有听Robert的。Worry首字母大写,且使用现在分词作状语;故答案填Worrying。
4. 根据第二段““None of our business!” said Henry. “Let us go home quietly and not meddle(管闲事)with it. Or we may get into trouble. Also, our parents are expecting to have dinner with us and I don't want them to worry about me.” (“不关我们的事!”亨利说。“让我们安静地回家,不要插手这件事。否则我们可能会陷入麻烦。另外,我们的父母期待和我们一起吃晚饭,我不想让他们担心我。”)”可知,Henry担心家长会着急,所以没有听Robert的。take one’s advice是固定搭配,故答案填advice。
5. 根据第四段“But Robert had told all the boys in class what happened to Henry and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and wouldn't play with him. (但是罗伯特已经告诉了班上所有的男孩发生在亨利身上的事情,他们都嘲笑了他很多。从那时起,他们开始看不起亨利,不愿意和他一起玩。)”可知,Robert告诉了同学们,这里应该一般过去时。故答案填told。
6. 根据第四段“But Robert had told all the boys in class what happened to Henry and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and wouldn't play with him. (但是罗伯特已经告诉了班上所有的男孩发生在亨利身上的事情,他们都嘲笑了他很多。从那时起,他们开始看不起亨利,不愿意和他一起玩。)”可知,Robert告诉了同学们,导致同学们不愿意和Henry一起玩,这就是疏远了Henry, distance可以做动词,意思是“疏远”。此处与前面的laugh at并列用省略to的不定式作宾补,故答案填distance。
7. 根据第五段“Thus, he ignored their laughter and continued to focus on his study. (因此,他无视了他们的嘲笑,继续专注于他的学习。)”可知,Henry继续专注于学习。故答案填focused。
8. 根据第六段“Every day after school, they didn't go back home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun. (每天放学后,他们并不直接回家,而是去河边或其他地方玩游戏,玩得非常开心。)”可知,他们没有回家,go back是return的同义词,didn't 后用动词原形,故答案填return。
9. 根据第七段“A few days later, with all of his learning tasks completed and feeling a little tired, Henry decided to take a walk along the river. (几天后,亨利完成了所有的学习任务,感到有点疲倦,决定沿着河边散步。)”可知,Henry在河边散步,在题目中,walk充当非谓语动词,与Henry 之间是主动关系,应该使用现在分词形式作状语,故答案填walking。
10. 根据第七段“While getting closer, he saw a boy struggling in the water with several boys that often played with Robert recently onshore, knowing nothing to do. (当他走近时,他看到一个男孩在水中挣扎,而最近经常和罗伯特一起玩的几个男孩在岸上,不知所措。)”可知,孩子们站在周围想要帮忙,但却无从下手,可以将help变成helping,形容词“提供帮助的、想要帮忙的”,修饰男孩儿们。故答案填helping。
【47题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Henry was a bit sad but he wasn't angry with them for Robert's rude behavior, because he knew that they misunderstood him, and that he was just afraid of doing wrong. (亨利有点难过,但他并没有因为罗伯特的粗鲁行为而对他们生气,因为他知道他们误解了他,他只是害怕做错事。)”可知,同学们是误会了Henry才会这样做,故答案填Because they misunderstood Henry.。
【48题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Thus, he ignored their laughter and continued to focus on his study. (因此,他无视了他们的嘲笑,继续专注于他的学习。)”可知,Henry无视他们的嘲笑,继续专注于学习,故答案填He ignored their laughter and continued to focus on his study.。
根据最后一段“While getting closer, he saw a boy struggling in the water with several boys that often played with Robert recently onshore, knowing nothing to do. (当他走近时,他看到一个男孩在水中挣扎,而最近经常和罗伯特一起玩的几个男孩在岸上,不知所措。)”可知,掉在河里的男孩儿很可能就是Robert,Henry一定要去施救,但是一定要保住自己的安全为前提,最合适的做法是向附近的成年人求救。故答案填He will run as quickly as possible to ask for help of grown-ups nearby. Because the boy struggling in the river is Robert, and he must save his friend, only on the premise that he is safe. So it is wiser to ask for the adults’ help instead if jumping into the river himself.

4. For most people, who would set an example to them in their lives?
A. Mother. B. Father. C. Grandpa. D. Teachers.
5. What does the underlined word “outgrow” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

D. Lose interest in something as someone gets older.
6. What was Nana extremely interested in?
A. Sports cars. B. Various plants.
C. Children’s toys. D. Different local clubs.
7. How does the writer repay her old Nana?
A. By doing what he did at early years. B. By traveling with him behind the wheel.
C. By companying and chatting with him. D. By sending him gifts for what he did for her.
C

“You are a coward(胆小鬼)!”said Robert, running off angrily.
Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual. But Robert had told all the boys in class what happened to Henry and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and wouldn't play with him.
Henry was a bit sad but he wasn't angry with them for Robert's rude behavior because he knew that they misunderstood him, and that he was just afraid of doing wrong.
